The contact owns a 2011 Chrysler Town and Country. The contact stated that while attempting to start the vehicle, the ABS module and Service Brake warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that the gear shift indicator also failed to operate as needed. A dealer was contacted. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the ABS and traction control had failed, and the ABS module needed to be replaced. The ABS module was replaced. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 86,000.
Vehicle is a 2011 Chrysler Town Country Touring L and has 68,000 miles on it. It is well maintained with no issues prior to compliant incident. While normal driving of vehicle emergency dash light system activated numerous safety warning lights i.e.: ABS, ESC, Engine light. My wife was travelling on a highway at 68 mph. Loss of drivability noted at the time included; loss of speedometer, abnormal shifting of transmission, loss of ABS and traction Control, Cruise Control and seat belt notification. The following day, I took the vehicle to repair dealership where I was notified that there was numerous codes showing up on scanner. PCM Codes included; c2200 Internal fault of ABS Module, U1110, U1120, P0501. Advised that I would lose numerous other systems not noted due to codes these included; electric rear doors inoperable while vehicle started, seat belt alarm system, rear parking system notification. Dealership advises that Chrysler company has put the sale of ABS modules part # 68089474AA on hold for over the last year, due to an Engineering review, and that no modules are available for sale. It was recommend that I "get rid of the vehicle". In doing internet searches this is a long running problem with numerous vehicles using this same ABS Module system. Due to the numerous safety systems this affects, the vehicles are unsafe without a recall to correct this manufacturer defective ABS Brake Module. I have had to setup an auxiliary GPS module to calculate speed and severely limit driving this vehicle during inclement weather. As of now normal braking remains unaffected but there. Public is at the mercy of the manufacturer as ABS modules are not for sale and have a retail value of over $1300.00 + install and dealer reprogramming. This is a severe safety issue and aligns with other current recalls of similar models with the same condition. You may contact me at anytime to discuss. The contact stated that while merging at an undisclosed speed, he attempted to slow the vehicle by applying the brake pedal, which failed to slow the vehicle rapidly enough to avoid a collision. As a result, the contact collided with the vehicle in front of him. The air bags did not deploy. No warning lights were displayed on the instrument panel. A police report was filed. No injuries were reported. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The manufacturer was notified, but a case was not opened; the contact stated that he informed the manufacturer of intermittent brake failure as he had experienced similar events on undisclosed dates. The failure mileage was 52,000.
THE BRAKES RR WILL LOCK WHILE DRIVING IN THE HWY
I SMELLED SOMETHING BURNING ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. AFTER DRIVING A SHORT DISTANCE (15 MINUTES) I FOUND THE TIRE WAS VERY HOT. THE CAR HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN INSPECTED 3 WEEKS PRIOR, HAD BRAKE PADS REPLACED, AND INSPECTION DETECTED NO ISSUES. HAD CAR TAKEN TO MECHANIC AND FOUND A BRAKE HOSE FAILED RESULTING IN CALIPER NOT RELEASING. BRAKE HOSE AND BRAKE PAD NEEDED REPLACED. THIS IS UNUSUAL FOR A CAR WITH ONLY 67000 MILES.
DASH BOARD WARNING BRAKE LIGHTS COME ON INTERMITTENTLY, AND THE DEALERSHIP SAYS THEY CAN DO NOTHING ABOUT IT, AND WE SHOULD GO AHEAD DRIVE IT WITH THE WARNING LIGHT ON. WE CAN'T GET IT TO THE DEALER WHILE IT IS ON BECAUSE THE LIGHT WON'T STAY ON LONG ENOUGH FOR US TO GET IT TO THEM WHILE THE LIGHT IS ON. WE HAD TO THE SHOP AND THEY CAN'T FIND ANY PROBLEM. SO WE HAVE BEEN TOLD TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE EVEN THOUGH THE BRAKE WARNING LIGHT IS ON. HOW DO WE KNOW WHEN THERE IS ACTUALLY A PROBLEM???? IT MAY STAY ON FOR 10 SECONDS OR 90 SECONDS, AND IN A FEW MINUTES IT COMES ON AGAIN. IT MAY COME ON EVERY 5 MILES, OR A HUNDRED MILES. WE HAVE LITTLE CONFIDENCE IN IT THE DASH BRAKE WARNING LIGHT. THAT IS NO WAY TO DRIVE A CAR!!! THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR SEVERAL MONTHS.
VAN IS DRIVEN BY TWO SENIORS WHO DO NOT ABUSE BRAKES. AT 27000 MILES, ROTORS REQUIRED TURNING DUE TO WARPAGE. AT 49000 MILES, PROBLEM HAS RECURRED AND ROTORS WILL AGAIN REQUIRE SERVICE OR REPLACEMENT.
WITH ONLY 74,000 MILES ON MY VEHICLE, I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE BRAKES AND CALIPERS SEVERAL TIMES. I PURCHASED VEHICLE 12/2013 WITH 19,537 MILES ON IT. IN 8/2015 HAD TO REPLACE FRONT AND REAR PADS AND ROTORS. WITH 41,097 MILES ON IT. 12/16 REPLACED BOTH REAR BEARINGS. WITH 56,102 MILES ON IT. 4/17 REPLACED RIGHT REAR PADS/ROTORS/CALIPER. WITH 59,384 MILES ON IT. 6/17 REPLACED FRONT PADS/ROTORS. WITH 61,044 MILES ON IT. 2/18 REPLACED REAR PADS/ROTORS/CALIPER. WITH 67,836 MILES ON IT. I DO NOT USE YOUR DEALERS FOR SERVICE BECAUSE I'VE HAD NO SATISFACTION FROM THEM IN THE PAST. I DO USE A REPUTABLE LOCAL REPAIR SHOP. I HAVE THE FIDELITY GOLD PLUS INSURANCE AND THE COMPENSATE ME FOR SOME OF THE ISSUES BUT NOT MUCH. THIS POLICY EXPIRES 4/18. TO DATE MY VEHICLE HAS 67,850 MILES ON IT.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING AND REPAIRED. THE DETAILS OF THE REPAIRS WERE UNKNOWN. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 30,000.
THE PRIMARY ISSUE OCCURS WHENEVER THE BRAKE PEDAL IS DEPRESSED, EMERGENCY SITUATION OR JUST REDUCING SPEED, FROM AROUND 70 MPH TO A SLOWER SPEED AROUND 55 MPH. DURING THIS PHASE OF SPEED REDUCTION THE VEHICLE EXHIBITS AN ALMOST UNCONTROLLABLE INSTABILITY WHERE THE FRONT END AND THE STEERING WHEEL MUST BE HELD WITH TWO HANDS IN ORDER TO CONTROL THE VEHICLES DIRECTION. THIS DEFENSIVE ACT IS VERY TIRING. PRIOR TO PRESSING THE BRAKE THERE IS NO INDICATION OF TIRE PROBLEMS OF ANY KIND. SPEED CAN BE INCREASED AFTER RELEASING THE BRAKE AND NO PROBLEM IS DETECTED UNTIL THE BRAKES ARE ACTIVATED AGAIN. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. THE REQUIRED REPAIR IS TO REPLACE THE ROTORS. THE REPAIR STATION STATED THAT THIS IS BOTH A COMMON AND A SERIOUS ISSUE WITH CHRYSLER BECAUSE THE ROTORS ARE MANUFACTURED TO THIN AND THOSE THIN ROTORS WARP AFTER ABOUT 30000 MILES. ALSO IT WAS STATED THAT THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM AT CHRYSLER BUT THERE IS NO RECALL TO CORRECT IT. CHRYSLER STATES THAT IF THIS PROBLEM OCCURS WITHIN THE WARRANTY PERIOD (36 MOS/36000 MILES) THAT THE ROTORS MAY BE REPLACED AT NO CHARGE. THE SUBJECT VEHICLE HAS 30800 MILES BUT IS OUTSIDE THE 36 MONTH PERIOD. REGARDLESS OF THE WARRANTY PERIOD THIS SHOULD BE CLASSIFIED AS A MANUFACTURING/DESIGN PROBLEM AND CHRYSLER IS ALLOWING THE CUSTOMER TO TEST THE QUALITY OF THE PRODUCT AND ALLOWING THE CUSTOMER TO ASSUME THE RISK OF VEHICLE FAILURE. CHRYSLER SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO ISSUE A SAFETY RECALL OF ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES. *TR
VAN SHAKES AND MAKES GRINDING NOISES WHEN BRAKES ARE PRESSED. BROUGHT IT TO DEALER TOLD ME THAT FRONT BRAKES AND BACK BRAKES AND ROTORS NEED REPLACEMENT FOR $765.00. THE CAR HAS 27000 MILES ON IT THE BRAKES AND ROTORS SHOULD NOT HAVE GONE THIS QUICKLY. THIS CAR IS LESS THAN 3 YEARS OLD. IT WAS BRAND NEW WHEN I GOT IT. CHRYSLER NEEDS TO STEP UP AND BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL THESE BRAKE PROBLEMS. *JS
EXITING FREEWAY RAMP, MADE A SHARP RIGHT TURN, ALERTED BY VEHICLE PASSING BY THAT MY REAR BRAKES WERE VISIBLY ON FIRE. PULLED OVER EXITED THE VEHICLE WHERE REAR BRAKES WHERE STILL SMOKING. CAR TOWED TO SERVICE STATION WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS DEEMED NON-DRIVABLE DUE TO THE COMPLETE SEARING OF THE REAR BRAKE PADS, CALIPERS, ROTORS, AND REAR TIRES. THIS WAS AN EXTREMELY FRIGHTENING EXPERIENCE AS I THOUGHT THAT THE TOWN AND COUNTRY WAS LABELED AS ONE OF THE SAFEST MINI VANS. *TR
BRAKE PADS REPLACED AT 44,000 MILES. AT 46,000 MILES THE BRAKES STARTED VIBRATING THE ENTIRE CAR (LIKE ABS PULSATING X10) REGARDLESS OF SPEED. DEALER FOUND LOCKED CALIPER PINS WHICH HAD WARPED THE ROTORS ON THE LEFT SIDE. THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM. SO COMMON THAT CHRYSLER DECIDED TO POST A BULLETIN, INSTEAD OF A RECALL BECAUSE THEY HAVEN'T PUT ENOUGH THOUGHT INTO THE ISSUE TO FIND AN EFFECTIVE FIX. MEANWHILE, MY FAMILY'S SAFETY IS IN JEOPARDY. *TR

THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 42,000.
ON 8/3/13 (OR WITHIN A DAY OR TWO OF THAT DATE), I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE CAR HAD LESS THAN 36,000 MILES ON IT. IT NEEDED THE REAR BRAKES REPLACED, AND THERE WAS UNEVEN WEAR BETWEEN THE R & L BRAKES. DEALERSHIP REPLACED BRAKES AND CALIPERS ON BOTH REAR WHEELS. HAVE FELT SOME PULSING WHEN BREAKING, HAVE BEEN GETTING A HORRID BURNING SMELL WHEN DRIVING, CAN FEEL EXTREME HEAT FROM LR WHEEL AFTER DRIVING. TOOK TO DEALER. 4/28/14 REAR BRAKES AGAIN HAVE UNEVEN WEAR (L 6MM; R 8MM) LR OUTBOARD BRAKE PAD BACKING CLIP DISLODGED AND CONTACTING ROTOR. LIP IS DAMAGED. REMOVED LR CALIPER AND FOUND PADS FROZEN IN CALIPER BRACKET. APPROXIMATELY 8 MONTHS SINCE BOTH WERE REPLACED BY DEALERSHIP; AND APX. 12,000 MILES PUT ON THE CAR. ROTORS WERE DAMAGED AS WELL AND HAD TO BE REPLACED. HAD TO PUT NEW ADAPTER BRACKETS ON THE VAN, BECAUSE THE OEM ONES WERE CAUSING BRAKES TO SEIZE UP - PER DEALERSHIP. DEALERSHIP ALL FOR FIXING PROBLEM, AND SO IS CHRYSLER, AS LONG AS YOU ARE WILLING TO PAY FOR THE REPAIRS FOR THEIR DEFECTIVE AND DESIGN FLAWED BRAKES. *TR

AT 23,430 MILES, BRAKE ROTORS (ALL 4) EXCESSIVELY OUT OF ROUND. VEHICLE SHUDDERED UPON BRAKING, ESPECIALLY AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. ALL 4 ROTORS WERE RESURFACED AT CHRYSLER DEALER. AGAIN, AT 28,630 MILES, SAME VEHICLE, BRAKE PADS DOWN TO 15% AND HAD TO REPLACE ALL 4 BRAKE PADS AND MACHINE ALL 4 ROTORS AGAIN AT SAME CHRYSLER DEALER. VEHICLE SHUDDERED SLIGHTLY UPON BRAKING ONCE AGAIN, ESPECIALLY AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THESE INCIDENCES ARE ONLY 4,200 MILES AND 4 MONTHS APART, AND $1,000 OUT OF MY POCKET AND NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY, AS ARE SAID TO BE "NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR." REALLY? HMMM... *TR
WHILE BRAKING, THERE IS A LOT OF SHUDDERING AND CLICKING FROM THE REAR BRAKES. CONCLUSION IS THAT THIS IS A WARPED ROTOR. CHRYSLER DEALER SAYS IT IS NORMAL, BUT THE VAN HAS LESS THAN 50,000 MILES. WHILE RESEARCHING ONLINE, FOUND THAT THIS IS A COMMON COMPLAINT. SOME HAVE REPLACED ROTORS SEVERAL TIMES WITH LESS THAN 50,000 MILES. THESE SHOULD BE REPLACED WITH BETTER PARTS AT THE DEALER, FOR FREE; HOWEVER, THEY REFUSE TO HONOR THEIR CUSTOMERS. *JS
LIKE MANY OTHERS, MY CAR BEGAN TO SHUDDER WHEN THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED. THIS WENT ON FOR A FEW MONTHS & GOT WORSE. I SAW THE MANY OTHER COMPLAINTS ON THIS WEBSITE OF PREMATURE BRAKE WEAR, AND BROUGHT IT TO THE ATTENTION OF THE DEALER WHEN I BROUGHT MY VEHICLE IN. I KNEW THE FINDING WAS GOING TO BE WARPED ROTORS & THAT WAS INDEED THE CASE. YES, THEY GAVE ME THE EXTENDED WARRANTY TO REPLACE THE FRONT BRAKE ROTORS & PADS AND ONLY CHARGED THE $100 COPAY. THEY OFFERED TO REPLACE THE REAR ROTORS FOR $300 OR RESURFACE FOR $130. I WENT WITH THE RESURFACING. AS WITH THE OTHERS, I DON'T SEE WHY WARPING OF THE ROTORS PREMATURELY ISN'T A DEFECT AND A SAFETY HAZARD! *TR
