POWER STEERING FAILED. VEHICLE WAS IN DRIVEWAY NOT IN MOTION. DRIVER WAS UNABLE TO TURN WHEEL BECAUSE THERE WAS NO POWER STEERING.
2008 FORD ESCAPE HYBRID. WELL MAINTAINED, ALWAYS TAKEN IN FOR ANY AND ALL REPAIRS/MAINT/RECALLS. RECALL # 14S05 WAS ATTENDED TO IN 2015 , BY WAY OF REPROGRAMMING. AFTER THIS "REPAIR", WE COMPLAINED OF LOSS OF STEERING RADIUS, WAS TOLD THAT WAS NOT POSSIBLE AND THAT IT WAS FINE. FAST FORWARD TO JANUARY OF THIS YEAR, WRENCH LIGHT COMES ON, NO POWER STEERING AT ALL. OUR DEALERSHIP SAYS IT IS THE SAME ITEM AS RECALL AND SHOULD BE FIXED BY FORD CORP. FORD CORP SAID NO, SINCE ITS 7 YEARS OLD. THE LAW SAYS 10 YEARS FROM RECALL OR PURCHASE.. BECAUSE THEY REPROGRAMMED IT, THEY MAY NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY THING ELSE THAT GOES WRONG, EVEN IF IT IS THE SAME ISSUE. A KNOWN ISSUE. VERY UNSAFE, AND NOT SOMETHING THE CONSUMER CAN DAMAGE ON THEIR OWN. THIS WILL COST US BETWEEN 500 TO 2,500 DOLLARS TO REPAIR. SEEMS THAT A KNOWN PROBLEM SHOULD BE COVERED FOR MORE THAN A YEAR OUT FROM THE RECALL. IT FAILED SIX MONTHS AFTER THE RECALL WAS CLOSED, WHICH WAS ONLY OPEN FOR A YEAR. THE LOSS OF ABILITY TO STEER WAS TREMENDOUS . ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE. NOT SAFE TO DRIVE, AS THE EFFORT REQUIRED STEER WOULD PREVENT THE ABILITY TO AVOID A SITUATION COMPLETELY. MY VEHICLE IS USELESS AT THIS TIME. THE OPEN INVESTIGATION DP15001, SHOWS WHAT A TRUE PROBLEM THIS IS . VERY DANGEROUS. MANY PEOPLE ARE HAVING THIS FAILURE WHILE ACTIVELY DRIVING. IT WOULD APPEAR THAT FORD NEEDS TO RE ADDRESS THIS ISSUE. MY VEHICLE REPAIR LIGHT CAME ON WHILE DRIVING. THE FAILURE OCCURRED AFTER I HAD PARKED AND TURNED IT OFF. ONCE I RESTARTED THE VEHICLE, I HAD LOST ALL POWER STEERING . I WAS 60 MILES FROM HOME, SO I WAS FORCED TO DRIVE IT IN THAT CONDITION.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 FORD ESCAPE. WHILE DRIVING 25 MPH, THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME DIFFICULT TO TURN. WHILE ACCELERATING FROM A STOP AND MAKING A TURN, THE STEERING FAILED. AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED FOR A WHILE, THE STEERING RETURNED TO NORMAL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE TORQUE SENSOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 147,000.
MY 2008 FORD ESCAPE HAS LOST POWER STEERING. IT NO LONGER WORKS.
SLIPPING WHEN IT GOES FROM THIRD TO FOURTH GEAR
I TOOK MY 2008 FORD ESCAPE IN TO HAVE THE SENSOR REPLACED ON ELECTRIC POWER STEERING THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN TAKEN CARE OF CORRECTLY TO START WITH. I FILED A COMPLAINT YESTERDAY FOR THAT ISSUE. I FORGOT TO MENTION AND ADD A COMPLAINT FOR ANOTHER ISSUE THAT I AM HAVING ALSO WITH THE 2008 FORD ESCAPE. I AM HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE IGNITION. WHEN YOU TRY TO START THE VEHICLE IT WILL NOT START. IF YOU REMOVE THE KEY AND TRY AGAIN THEN IT WILL START. OR IF YOU SIT AND WAIT A FEW MINUTES AND RETRY TO START THE VEHICLE THEN IT WILL START. I THOUGHT AT FIRST THIS WAS CAUSED BY THE SHAKEN IN THE STEERING WHEEL. HOWEVER THE MECHANIC INFORMED ME THAT I NEEDED A IGNITION SWITCH AND IT WAS A SEPARATE ISSUE AND BILL. I COULD ONLY AFFORD TO HAVE THE SENSOR REPLACED FOR THE ELETRIC POWER STEERING WHEEL SO FOR NOW I CAN ONLY HOPE AND PRAY THE IGNITION SWITCH DOES NOT GO COMPLETELY OUT AND LEAVE ME STRANDED. I HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS WITH THIS VEHICLE. HONESTLY... I WANT TO CRY! EVERY TIME I TURN AROUND IT IS SOMETHING GOING WRONG WITH THIS VEHICLE. ALSO I HAD TO GET THE SERPENTINE BELT FIXED LAST WEEK AS WELL. I DONT KNOW OF WHAT MORE I CAN SAY AT THIS TIME. MY NERVES ARE SHOT WORRING ABOUT WHAT WILL GO WRONG NEXT WITH THIS VEHICLE AND I WORRY IF IT WILL START TO PICK MY DAUGHTER UP FROM SCHOOL AND SOCCER OR IF SHE WILL BE LEFT STRANDED BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE A RELIABLE VEHICLE. NOT TO MENTION HAVING TO WORRY; ABOUT HAVING MONEY FOR REPAIR AFTER REPAIR. I AM SO DISCUSSED WITH FORD! ALSO I HAVE A ISSUE WITH THE VEHICLE MAKING A NOISE. I THOUGHT THE NOISE COULD BE RELATED TO THE SERPENTINE BELT BUT THAT IS NOT THE CASE. IT IS SOMETHING ELSE, BUT I CAN'T AFFORD TO ADDRESS THAT ISSUE UNTIL I CAN GET THE IGNITION SWITCH REPLACED.
THE VEHICLE FAILED TO START AFTER THE KEY WAS INSERTED INTO THE IGNITION SWITCH. THE KEY HAS TO BE FORCED IN AND CRANKED OVER WITH CONSIDERABLE TORQUE.
ON DECEMBER 11, 2015 I HAD TAKEN MY 2008 FORD ESCAPE TO DEALER FOR THE 14S05 RECALL BEING THAT TWO DAYS BEFORE MY POWER STEERING HAD LOCKED UP. THEY DID THE SOFTWARE UPDATE NOW ON DECEMBER 31, 2015 I HAVE NO POWER STEERING AT ALL. TOOK IT BACK TO DEALER SAID TORQUE SENSOR WENT OUT AND IS NOT PART OF RECALL. ITS PRETTY UNSAFE THAT THEY RECALL THIS PART BUT WONT HONOR TO FIX IT WHEN THEY KNOW ITS A PROBLEM WITH ALL THESE VEHICLES BETWEEN 2008-2011. WHY SEND A RECALL LETTER IF THE DEALER ISN'T GOING TO FIX THE PROBLEM AND EXPECT YOU TO PAY PUT OF POCKET FOR SOMETHING THEY KNOW IS BEING RECALLED?? MAKES ME VERY UPSET AND UNHAPPY WITH FORD AND THEIR VEHICLES IF THEY CAN'T MAKE THEM SAFE FOR PEOPLE TO DRIVE, THEY ARE PICKING THE CHEAPEST WAY TO FIX THE PROBLEM WITH JUST THE SOFTWARE UPDATE WHEN THE ISSUE IS MORE TO DO WITH THE TORQUE SENSOR IN THE VEHICLES. PEOPLE ARE DRIVING THESE VEHICLES THINKING THEY ARE FIXED WHEN THEY ARE NOT, THINKING WE ARE IN A SAFE VEHICLE AND WE ARE NOT BECAUSE FORD DOESN'T WANT TO HONOR THE RECALL. ITS RIDICULOUS HOW FORD IS DOING THIS AND NOT SAFE FOR DRIVERS. PLEASE HELP ME AND EVERYONE WHO HAS HAD THIS ISSUE WITH THE RECALL DEALING WITH THE TORQUE SENSOR GET REPLACED...THANK YOU. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 FORD ESCAPE HYBRID. WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE STEERING WHEEL BEGAN TO SHAKE VIOLENTLY AND AN ABNORMAL NOISE WAS HEARD. THE POWER STEERING ASSIST FAULT LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE FAILURE OCCURRED RANDOMLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE TORQUE SENSOR FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 140,000.
THE CAR IS EQUIPPED WITH ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING. THE VEHICLE STARTED EXPERIENCING INTERMITTENT POWER STEERING ISSUES WHERE THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD SHUTTER WHILE DRIVING NORMALLY AT ANY SPEED (STATIONARY OR IN MOTION, AND ON CITY STREETS OR HIGHWAYS, WHILE BRAKING, ETC - EVERYTHING) AND SOMETIMES COMPLETELY SHUT OFF POWER ASSISTED STEERING ALL TOGETHER MAKING THE VEHICLE EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO STEER. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO FORD FOR THE RECALL PROCEDURE APPROXIMATELY A YEAR AGO FROM THIS POSTING, HOWEVER, ONLY A SOFTWARE UPDATE WAS PERFORMED. THIS SEEMED TO TEMPORARILY FIX THE ISSUES WE WERE DESCRIBING, BUT ABOUT 10 MONTHS TO 1 YEAR LATER THE SAME ISSUES STARTED OCCURRING. THE VEHICLE HAS NO POWER STEERING AVAILABLE AND WE WERE TOLD THAT THE TORQUE SENSOR IN THE POWER STEERING UNIT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED (IMPLYING THAT THE PSCM MODULE WAS REPORTING A FAULTY SENSOR), BUT THE PROCEDURE WAS NOT GOING TO BE COVERED BY THEM SINCE THE CAR WAS PREVIOUSLY 'SERVICED' BY FORD FOR THE RECALL. HAD WE WAITED ABOUT 10 MONTHS TO 1 YEAR BEFORE PERFORMING THE FIRST RECALL, EVERYTHING WOULD HAVE BEEN REPLACED AS IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN. NOW, WE ARE FORCED TO REPLACE THE TORQUE SENSOR FOR A QUOTED $550 - WHICH THEY TELL US MAY NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM (ALTHOUGH THAT IS THE ONLY CODE THAT IS BEING REPORTED) AND MIGHT HAVE TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE COLUMN. IDENTIFYING A RECALL PROCEDURE BY ONLY CHECKING IF THE CODES WERE PRESENT AT THE TIME OF RECALL IS NOT A GUARANTEED WAY TO REPLACE ALL FAULTY SENSORS. A MORE ACCURATE WAY TO FIND THE FAULTY PART IS FOR FORD TO ANALYZE THEIR DATA OF FAULTY POWER STEERING VEHICLES AND REPLACE VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH SENSOR SERIAL NUMBERS FROM SPECIFIC RANGES, MANUFACTURING DATES, AND MANUFACTURING LOCATIONS.

IN 2014, THE CONTACT DID NOT OWN THE VEHICLE; HOWEVER, IT WAS SERVICED BY THE DEALER ACCORDING TO NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V284000 (STEERING) EVEN THOUGH THERE WAS NO FAILURE. THE POWER STEERING CONTROL MODULE WAS UPDATED. MOST RECENTLY, THE FAILURE OCCURRED. A CERTIFIED MECHANIC DIAGNOSED THAT THE STEERING WHEEL SENSOR AND THE AFFECTED POWER STEERING COMPONENTS WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER DENIED TO SERVICE THE VEHICLE UNDER THE RECALL A SECOND TIME. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 104,200.
MY CAR WAS SITTING AND I WENT TO START IT AND THE "REGEN BRAKES DISABLED" AND "CHECK BRAKE SYSTEM" CAME ACROSS MY DASH. ITS A LONG STORY BUT I TOOK IT TO COURTESY FORD IN OKEMOS, MI AND THEY SAID THAT THE HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNTIL NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, THIS PART WOULD COST ME $4,620.20 TO REPLACE. I HAVE ONLY OWNED THIS FOR JUST OVER A YEAR.I OWE $10,080.00 ON THIS VEHICLE, I CANNOT GET A LOAN TO FIX IT AND COURTESY FORD SAID THEY WOULD ONLY GIVE ME $3,700 FOR IT! I AM A SINGLE MOTHER OF 2 AND CANNOT AFFORD TO FIX THIS VEHICLE! I EMAILED FORD AND THEY SAID THEY CANNOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT OR HELP ME OUT FIXING IT. I AM WITHOUT A VEHICLE AND STUCK WITH A $10,000 DEBT!!! FORD NEEDS TO RECALL THE HYBRIDS DUE TO THEIR FAULTY PART NOT TO MENTION IT IT UNSAFE TO DRIVE. THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THAT IT IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE SO IT SITS THERE. I AM OUTRAGED AND SICKENED AT FORD. THEY NEED TO BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR FAULTY PART. PURCHASED A 2008 FORD ESCAPE NEW IN 2008 AND HAVE HAD IT WORKED ON 3 DIFFERENT TIMES FOR THE ACCELERATOR STICKING CAUSED BY THE THROTTLE BODY. IT WAS NEVER REPLACED. NOW BECAUSE I HAVE 116000 MILES ON IT I JUST GOT TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF. ONCE AGAIN THE ACCELERATOR STUCK AND LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER AND HOLD THE BRAKE AND SHUT IT OFF. I PAID $110 TO TOW IT TO A FORD DEALERSHIP. WELL NOW IT IS GOING TO COST ME $1000 TO REPLACE THE THROTTLE BODY. THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN DONE PREVIOUSLY AND NOW IT SEEMS TO BE ON ME OR RISK BEING KILLED DUE TO THIS SAFETY ISSUE. EVEN IF IT WAS NEVER ISSUED AS A RECALL ITEM I HAVE HAD ISSUES WITH THIS SINCE PURCHASING IT NEW IN 2008. I WANT SOMETHING DONE. I DID CALL FORD MTR CO AND WAS TOLD THEY COULD NOT HELP ME BECAUSE THE VEHICLE HAS OVER 100000 MILES ON IT. WELL IF IT HAD BEEN HANDLED EVEN ONCE IN THE PAST 3 TIMES IT COULD HAVE GOTTEN ME KILLED THEN IT WOULD NOT BE AN ISSUE NOW. *JS
I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTIFICATION 14S05 FROM FORD ABOUT MY 2008 FORD ESCAPE. THE RECALL WAS FOR A FAULTY TORQUE SENSOR THAT WOULD EITHER BE REPROGRAMMED OR REPLACED. INSTEAD OF REPLACING THE TORQUE SENSOR, FORD SERVICE DECIDED TO JUST REPROGRAM IT BECAUSE IT HAD NOT FAILED OR PRODUCED A SERVICE CODE. JUST RECENTLY THE TORQUE SENSOR FAILED AND MY STEERING LOST POWER WHILE DRIVING THROUGH A PARKING LOT. I DID NOT HAVE THE STRENGTH TO TURN THE WHEEL AND HAD TO JUST STOP AND LEAVE THE CAR IN THE LOT UNTIL SOMEONE COULD COME HELP ME. I BROUGHT MY CAR BACK TO THE SAME DEALERSHIP THAT PERFORMED THE ORIGINAL RECALL REPAIR AND AM BEING TOLD THAT THE RECALL HAS BEEN PERFORMED AND NOW I MUST PAY THEM TO REPLACE THE TORQUE SENSOR. AFTER SPENDING TIME RESEARCHING THE ISSUE ONLINE I DISCOVERED THAT THIS IS A WIDESPREAD PROBLEM. IT IS APPARENT THAT FORD IS ONLY REPLACING THE SENSORS IF THEY HAVE ALREADY FAILED WHEN YOU BRING YOUR CAR IN FOR THE RECALL. IF IT HAS NOT FAILED THEN FORD ONLY DOES A REPROGRAMMING THAT DOESN'T PREVENT THEM FROM FAILING BUT ALLOWS FORD TO CLOSE OUT THE RECALL ON YOUR VEHICLE AND SAVE MONEY ON A REPLACEMENT PART. I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW THIS IS LEGAL FOR THEM TO DO. I TALKED TO SEVERAL OF FORD'S SERVICE MANAGERS AND CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVES AND THEY ALL GIVE THE STANDARD REHEARSED ANSWER. *TR
THE THROTTLE SEEMS TO GET STUCK WHILE I'M DRIVING. I'LL PUSH DOWN ON THE GAS PEDAL, THE RPMS WILL GO UP, BUT THE CAR WON'T SPEED UP OR RESPOND FOR A FEW SECONDS AND THEN IT WILL FINALLY "CATCH" AND ACCELERATE. HAPPENS OFTEN, SOMETIMES FROM A STOP AND SOMETIMES WHEN I'M ALREADY IN MOTION, EVEN ON THE HIGHWAY. I'VE BEEN HAVING THE PROBLEM FOR ABOUT A YEAR NOW, AND I ONLY HAVE AROUND 38,000 MILES ON THE CAR.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DALER TO RECEIVE THE RECALL REMEDY; HOWEVER, THE DIAGNOSTIC TEST FAILED TO PRODUCE A FAULT CODE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. LOST POWER STEERING. VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY. DEALER IS CLAIMING THAT B/C I BROUGHT IT IN TO THEM 10 MONTHS AGO AND HAD THE CODES CHECKED (NONE FOUND AT THE TIME), THAT MY RECALL COVERAGE IS NOW NULL AND VOID. I WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER OFF NEVER TAKING IT IN FOR THE RECALL, AS THE CHARGES ARE AROUND $1000.00 AND ARE EXACTLY WHAT MY CAR IS RECALLED FOR (ELECTRIC POWER STEERING ASSIST FAILURE.)

IN 2012, I WAS DRIVING ON FREEWAY AT APPROX 70MPH WHEN I HEARD THE WARNING SOUND AND RED LIGHT WARNING ME TO "STOP SAFELY NOW." I CALLED AND TOOK MY VEHICLE FOR REPAIR, WHICH WAS DETERMINED TO BE THE COOLANT PUMP (COST $1010.96). THE NEXT YEAR A RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE OCCURRED AND I WAS REFUNDED THE COST FOR REPAIR. TODAY, 2015, THE SAME ISSUE OCCURRED. THIS TIME I HAD JUST PULLED OFF FROM A TRAFFIC LIGHT MAKING A U-TURN, SO TRAVELING MAYBE 10 MPH WHEN I GOT THE SAME SOUND AND WARNING RED LIGHT AS I FELT THE ENGINE LOSING POWER. I GOT THROUGH THE BUSY INTERSECTION AND SAFELY TO THE SHOULDER. I IMMEDIATELY DROVE THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP. THIS TIME I WAS TOLD THE ISSUE WAS THE THROTTLE BODY. IT WAS CLEANED AND REPROGRAMMED (COST $369.15; I WAS TOLD MY VEHICLE IS NOT IN THE VIN# GROUP). WHILE THE COSTS HAVE BEEN HIGH FINANCIALLY, WE ARE MOSTLY CONCERNED ABOUT THE POTENTIAL COSTS FROM HAVING THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY LOSE POWER AND SHUT DOWN. BOTH TIMES I HAVE BEEN VERY LUCKY TO AVOID CRASHES. SAME SYMPTOMS, DIFFERENT DIAGNOSES; CONCERNED ABOUT WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN NEXT.

AT APPROXIMATELY 134,000 MILES WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, MY CAR SUDDENLY DRASTICALLY SLOWED DOWN QUICKLY, STARTED REVVING REALLY HIGH AND THE 'WRENCH LIGHT' CAME ON. THIS ALMOST RESULTED IN GETTING REAR-ENDED BY THE CAR THAT WAS TRAVELING BEHIND ME ON THE HIGHWAY. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A FORD DEALERSHIP FOR AN ESTIMATE. WAS TOLD THE TRANSMISSION WAS MISSING 2ND AND 4TH GEAR AND THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. WAS TOLD BY FORD THAT THE COST WOULD BE $4,200 TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION. THE BAND FOR 2ND AND 4TH GEAR BROKE, SENDING THE VEHICLE INTO LIMP MODE (ONLY USING 1ST AND 3RD GEAR). I FOUND THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE AS THERE ARE MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS AS WELL AS A TSB (#TSB-12-4-8). AFTER FURTHER RESEARCH, I HAVE DISCOVERED THAT THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE WITH ALL FORD FAMILY VEHICLES THAT HAVE THE CD4E TRANSMISSION. I HAVE OWNED FORD VEHICLES FOR OVER 20 YEARS AND HAVE NEVER HAD THIS ISSUE. FORD KNOWS THAT THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE BUT REFUSES TO ASSIST THEIR LOYAL CUSTOMERS WITH A SOLUTION. WHILE TALKING TO A FORD SERVICE TECHNICIAN ABOUT THIS, I WAS TOLD THAT FORD KNOWS ABOUT THE ISSUE BUT REFUSES TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT, LEAVING THE CUSTOMER TO PAY TO REPLACE SOMETHING THAT FORD KNOWS HAS ISSUES. DOES IT REALLY TAKE SOMEONE TO GET INJURED OR GET KILLED IN ORDER FOR SOMETHING TO BE DONE ABOUT IT? IF FEEL THAT FORD SHOULD PAY TO HAVE THE TRANSMISSION REPLACED OR PROVIDE A SIGNIFICANT DISCOUNT IF THE CUSTOMER MUST PAY FOR THE REPLACEMENT.

BASED ON MY DISCUSSION WITH THE REPAIR SHOP, THIS IS RELATED TO NHTSA CAMPAIGN #14V-284 -- FORD RECALL #14S05. THE REPAIR SHOP (MIDAS) SAID IT WAS A FAULTY TORQUE SENSOR AND INDICATED THAT IT WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF $889.30. I HAD THE REPAIR MADE, BUT I HAD TO SCHEDULE A FOLLOW-UP APPOINTMENT WITH FORD BECAUSE THEY HAD TO DO SOFTWARE UPDATES BECAUSE THE STEERING WASN'T COMPLETELY RIGHT AFTER THE FIRST REPAIR. THE VEHICLE HAS 133,700 MILES ON IT.
WHEN STARTING THE CAR PARKED AND SOMETIMES WHEN DRIVING, "CHECK BRAKE SYSTEM / REGEN BRAKES DISABLED" MESSAGE APPEARS ALONG WITH ABS LIGHT. CAR LOSES MOST OF ITS BRAKING POWER FROM THE REGENERATIVE BRAKES REQUIRING A GREAT DEAL OF PRESSURE ON THE BRAKE PEDAL TO STOP THE CAR. BRAKING POWER IS REDUCED AND STOPPING DISTANCES INCREASING SUBSTANTIALLY, CAUSING NEAR MISSES IN HEAVY TRAFFIC. DEALER RECOMMENDS REPLACING THE ABS CONTROL UNIT, WHICH IS A $4,100 PART (PLUS LABOR) FOR AN 8 YEAR OLD VEHICLE. THUS, THE ONLY WAY TO FIX THE ISSUE IS TO PAY MORE FOR PARTS AND LABOR THAN THE CAR IS ACTUALLY WORTH, RENDERING IT WORTHLESS TO THE OWNER. THIS HAS HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES OVER THE COURSE OF TWO MONTHS. SOMETIMES THE PROBLEM GOES AWAY AND THE CAR CAN BE DRIVEN SHORT DISTANCES WITH ALL OF ITS BRAKING POWER, SOMETIMES IT DOESN'T WORK FOR DAYS AT A TIME.

TOOK IT TOO KLABEN FORD AND THEY TOLD ME THE HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT NEEDED REPLACING. I DID THIS, BUT IT WAS OVER $5000 FOR THE REPAIR (WITH LABOR).

AFTER THE DEALER SERVICE INVESTIGATION IT WAS REPORTED THAT IT CAME FROM AN AREA ON THE SIDE WALL OF THE TANK AND WAS RUST THROUGH. THE AREA DID NOT APPEAR TO HAVE PROPER COATING ON IT.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V284000 (STEERING). AFTER THE RECALL REPAIR, THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCED A FAILURE IN THE POWER STEERING ASSIST SYSTEM. PRIOR TO THE RECALL REPAIR, THE VEHICLE WAS DIAGNOSED WITH HAVING NO FAULT CODE PRIOR TO THE REMEDY BEING PERFORMED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 88,000.
IN JULY 2015 I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FROM THE FORD COMPANY. THE RECALL STATED THAT THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM MIGHT REVERT TO MANUAL STEERING MODE DUE TO AN ELECTRIC POWER STEERING SYSTEM FAULT RELATED TO THE TORQUE SENSOR RESULTING IN AN INCREASE OF AN ACCIDENT THE STEERING EFFORT WOULD BECOME GREATER AT LOW SPEEDS. ON SEPTEMBER 14TH, 2015 I HAD MY LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP FOLLOW THE GUIDELINES STATED FOR THE RECALL AND PERFORM REAL 14S05 CONCLUDING THAT NO CODE WAS PRESENT AND PROCEEDED IN REPROGRAMMING THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER. ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23RD, 2015 UPON STARTING MY CAR AT WORK, THE POWER STEERING WHEEL DID NOT WORK AND MANUAL STEERING WAS REQUIRED UPON DRIVING TO THE LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP. NO LIGHT WAS ON THE DASH BOARD OR THE INFO SETTING TO INDICATE THAT THERE WAS AN ISSUE. UPON STARTING MY CAR AT THE DEALERSHIP, THE POWER STEERING STARTED WORKING AGAIN. ON MONDAY, OCTOBER 26TH, THE SAME DEALERSHIP PERFORMED THE RECALL 14S05 AGAIN CHECKING FOR DTC'S AND THE TORQUE LIGHT SENSOR FAULT CODE B2278 WAS PRESENT. NO PINPOINT TESTS AVAILABLE FOR THE CODE AND THE CHART CALLED FOR SENSOR REPLACEMENT. THE COST TO FIX THIS IS $700 AND WOULD HAVE BEEN PAID FOR BY THE RECALL A MONTH PRIOR IF IT HAD SHOWN UP ON THE PERFORMED RECALL TEST. THE FORD DEALERSHIP SAID THAT THEY HAD NOT SEEN ANY RECALL VEHICLES WITH THE STEERING COLUMN INTERMITTENTLY WORKING BUT HAD REPLACED THE STEERING WHEEL COLUMN ALL TOGETHER. FORD COMPANY: "ANY SUBSEQUENT LOSS OF ASSIST REPAIRS EXPERIENCED AFTER COMPLETION OF MODULE REPROGRAMMING ARE NOT COVERED BY THIS RECALL". THE SOFTWARE UPDATES MAY EXTEND THE TIME STEERING ASSIST IS MAINTAINED. THE UPDATE PROVIDES INCREASED DRIVER AWARENESS BY SOUNDING A CHIME AND DISPLAYING THE WRENCH LIGHT OR WARNING IN THE MESSAGE CENTER WHEN A FAULT IS DETECTED." THIS CLEARLY DID NOT HAPPEN WHEN MY CAR LOST IT'S POWER STEERING ON OCTOBER 23RD, 2015.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 20 MPH, THERE WAS A VIBRATION COMING FROM THE STEERING COLUMN WITHOUT WARNING. THE FAILURE RECURRED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS. IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS SERVICED UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V284000 (STEERING) BUT THE VEHICLE FAILED TO START AFTER THE RECALL REPAIRS WERE PERFORMED. THE FAILURE RECURRED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE STEERING COLUMN NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 82,000.
POWER STEERING FAILED WHILE DRIVING, UNABLE TO MAKE TURNS, EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO GET CAR TO SAFETY. THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION AND TO MAKE A TURN REQUIRED GREAT STRENGTH.
