My vehicle has 2 fuel tanks. In the last month I have been noticing that the rest tank is pushing gas to the front tank. I have also noticed a strong fuel smell if I select the rear tank first after filling both tanks. Looking on line there is a NHTSA recall on 1990-1993 models. NHTSA # 93v125000. This appears to be a common occurrence on multiple years from what complaints are on line. I have not had the vehicle inspected. I just figured out what the issue is. A mechanic told me that the strong gas smell is the front tank over filling by the rear tank. He said there is a check valve that needs to replaced.
WHILE DRIVING MY DUAL TANK 1995 FORD F-150, USING THE REAR TANK, I NOTICED FUEL BEING FORCED OUT OF MY FRONT FUEL FILLER CAP. NOT SURE HOW MUCH FUEL WAS PUMPED OUT PRIOR TO MY NOTICING. I HAD TO LET THE TRUCK SIT WHILE THE FUEL VAPOR DISSIPATED. I FINALLY GOT IT HOME USING THE FRONT TANK. NOT SURE WHAT TO DO WITH IT NOW.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1995 FORD F-150. THE CONTACT STATED THAT FUEL FUMES EMITTED INTO THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT FOUND A LEAK AND NOTICED FUEL SPEWING OUT OF THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, BUT WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 185,000.
MY TRUCK HAS DUAL FUEL TANKS. FUEL FROM THE FRONT TANK IS DIVERTED INTO THE REAR TANK. THIS CAUSES THE REAR TANK TO OVERFLOW GASOLINE OUT OF THE GAS CAP. THIS HAPPENS WHEN THE TRUCK'S ENGINE IS RUNNING AND IT IS STATIONARY OR IN MOTION. I HAVE TO MAKE SURE THE REAR TANK IS NEVER MORE THAN HALF FULL TO KEEP THIS FROM HAPPENING. WHEN I FIRST DISCOVERED THE PROBLEM I LOOKED ONLINE AND FOUND OTHER OWNERS OF THIS TRUCK HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. I BELIEVE IT CAN BE A FIRE HAZARD IF LEAKING FUEL SHOULD CONTACT THE TRUCKS EXHAUST SYSTEM. I OWN ANOTHER FORD F150 TRUCK WITH THE SAME PROBLEM.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE THE REAR FUEL TANK WAS DISCONNECTED AND THE FRONT TANK WAS REPLACED. THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS WHERE IT WAS STATED THAT THE FUEL PUMP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED AND THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 205,000.
MY 1995 FORD F-150 HAS DUEL GAS TANKS AND THE REAR TANK STRAPS HAVE CORRODED CAUSING THE TANK TO LOOSE ALL FUEL(1/2 TANK) LEAKING OVER THE SPARE TIRE AND UNDERSIDE OF THE TANK. THIS STARTED WITH THE SMELL OF RAW FUEL IN JULY BUT COULD NOT FIND THE LEAK UNTIL 3 DAYS AGO WHEN I FOUND A LARGE GAS SPOT ON THE DRIVE WAY DIRECTLY UNDER THE REAR TANK AND THE DRIPPING FUEL FROM THE SPARE. I HAVE NOT TAKEN IT TO THE DEALER YET BUT AM PLANNING TO THIS WEEK. THE TANK HAS QUIT LEAKING DUE TO BEING PRETTY WELL EMPTY. BUT THE ODOR IS STILL THERE. THE TRUCK HAS 74,062.4 ORIGINAL MILES AT THIS TIME AND I HAVE OWNED IT SINCE NOVEMBER 1974. I HAVE OWNED MANY FORD'S AND EVEN WORKED FOR FORD AT THE HEAVY TRUCK PLANT IN LOUISVILLE KY ALONG WITH MY UNCLE AND TWO COUSINS . NEVER ENCOUNTERED ANYTHING LIKE THIS BEFORE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A SERVICE DEALER, WHERE THE DEALER DETERMINED THAT THE PUMP IN THE REAR TANK FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED AT THAT TIME. THERE IS A NHTSA RECALL # 93V125000, PERTAINING TO THE FUEL TANK ASSEMBLY HOWEVER THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL.

A MALFUNCTIONING CHECK VALVE WITHIN THE FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY CAUSES A PORTION OF THE UNUSED FUEL FROM ONE TANK TO BE RETURNED TO THE SECOND TANK. WHEN THIS OCCURS, THE CAPACITY OF THE SECOND TANK CAN BE EXCEEDED, CAUSING FUEL SPILLAGE. *JB

I HAVE A DUAL FUEL TANK SYSTEM. THE REAR TANK IS PUMPING GAS INTO THE FORWARD TANK. THE FORWARD TANK IS OVERFLOWING PAST THE FILLER CAP AND SPILLING TO THE GROUND. THESE SYMPTOMS ARE INDENTICAL TO THE 1993 F-SERIES FUEL SYSTEMS PROBLEMS NHTSA ID # 00V-424, MFG CAMPAIGN # 00S57. I JUST WENT TO THE LOCAL FORD DEALER. THEY LOOKED UP MY VIN AND SAID THAT MY VEHICLE IS NOT LISTED UNDER THIS RECALL. THE DEALER IS MORE THAN WILLING TO HELP. I WAS TOLD THAT THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN WOULD FIRST HAVE TO TROUBLESHOOT THE CAUSE AND FIND OUT IF THE FAILURE IS DUE TO THE SAME PART BEING DEFECTIVE AS THE RECALL ITEMS. THEN I WOULD HAVE TO BATTLE FORD TO PAY FOR THE FIX. I WAS TOLD THAT THEY SOMETIMES HAVE TROUBLE GETTING FORD TO PAY FOR REPAIRS IF THE VEHICLE IS NOT LISTED ON THE RECALL, EVEN IF IT IS THE SAME PART MALFUNCTIONING. I AM GOING TO BEGIN REPAIRING THE VEHICLE SOON AND WOULD APPRECIATE ANY HELP YOU CAN GIVE ME. THE FOLLOWING ARE RECALL NUMBERS FOR THE SAME PROBLEM...EXCEPT THEY ARE FOR THE YEARS OF 1990-1993. 01I0080000 , 93V125000 , 00V424000 . I WENT TO MY LOCAL FORD DEALER THAT I BOUGHT THE TRUCK FROM IN SEPTEMBER OF 2002. THEY SAID NOTHING COULD BE DONE BY THEM BECAUSE THERE IS NO RECALL FOR MY TRUCK. I WOULD LIKE SOME ANSWERS...THIS IS THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM THAT THEY ADMITTED TO IN THE EARLIER VEHICHLES! FORD NEEDS TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THIS PROBLEM. THE SERVICE WRITER AT THE DEALERSHIP SAID THAT THEY HAD SEEN THIS BEFORE IN THIS YEAR VEHICLE. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHY FORD CAN GET AWAY WITH SUCH AN OBVIOUS SAFTY ISSUE.
