The vehicle was towed to the local dealer who diagnosed that the rear axle bolts snapped off causing the wheel to detach from the vehicle. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 76,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2016 FORD TRANSIT. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 15 MPH, THE CONTACT HEARD A BANGING SOUND AND THE VEHICLE PULLED TO THE RIGHT. THE CONTACT HAD TO FORCE THE VEHICLE TO THE LEFT TO AVOID STRIKING TWO PARKED VEHICLES. THE VEHICLE TRAVELED APPROXIMATELY 60 YARDS AND CAME TO A STOP. IN ADDITION, THE BRAKES FAILED TO OPERATE. THE CONTACT EXITED THE VEHICLE AND NOTICED THAT THE PASSENGER SIDE WHEEL COLLAPSED AND WAS UNDER THE VEHICLE. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED AND THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND TRANSFERRED THE CONTACT TO NHTSA FOR FURTHER ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 353.
UNSAFE HANDLING CHARACTERISTICS 2016 FORD TRANSIT T350 144"WHEELBASE WITH THE EXTENDED LENGTH, HIGH ROOF, SINGLE REAR WHEEL. UNSAFE SWAYING AND POSSIBLE LOSS OF CONTROL WHEN AFFECTED BY HIGH WINDS, PASSING TRUCKS OR UNEVEN ROAD CONDITIONS. NOT SAFE TO DRIVE OVER 55 MPH ON THE HIGHWAY DUE TO EXCESSIVE SWAYING THAT COULD LEAD TO LOSS OF CONTROL. HAD FORD DEALER CONFIRM THAT THERE IS NO MECHANICAL PROBLEM AND THAT IT WAS PERFORMING AS DESIGNED. FORD ENGINEERS HAVE NO FIX AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME. IT IS NOT A INTERMITTENT PROBLEM BUT RATHER A PROBLEM THAT OCCURS EVERY TIME IT IS DRIVEN IN THE ABOVE CONDITIONS. IT IS A PROBLEM THAT BECAME EVIDENT RIGHT AFTER TAKING POSSESSION OF THE VEHICLE (IT DID NOT DEVELOP OR WORSEN WITH TIME BUT RATHER SEEMS TO BE A DESIGN FLAW).
