MAKING 3-POINT TURN ON DIRT ROAD, POWER STEERING FAILED. UPON INSPECTION AT REPAIR SHOP, FOUND THAT SHAFT ON POWER STEERING PUMP HAD FRACTURED. REQUIRED REPLACEMENT OF POWER STEERING PUMP. THIS CORRESPONDS TO NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 05V005000 AND NHTSA ACTION NUMBER EA04012, ALTHOUGH GMC HAS TOLD ME THAT MY VIN IS NOT INCLUDED. IT SHOULD BE. *TR
I HAVE A 2000 GMC YUKON (NON-XL). I WAS TURNING AROUND IN A PARKING LOT AND HEARD A CRUNCH IN THE FRONT ENGINE COMPARTMENT OF THE VEHICLE. WHEN I WENT TO STRAIGHTEN OUT AND CONTINUED ONTO THE STREET, THE POWER STEERING WAS GONE. I HAD TO STRONG ARM IT HOME. I DID SOME RESEARCH ON RECALLS AND FOUND THAT THE 2000 GMC YUKON XL HAD IN FACT BEEN RECALLED FOR THE EXACT SYMPTOMS THAT MY VEHICLE HAD (NON XL). I CALLED GMC THE NEXT DAY AND EXPLAINED THE SITUATION. I ASKED THEM IF THE SAME RECALLED POWER STEERING PARTS ARE USED FOR THE STANDARD AND THE XL YUKON. THE GMC REPRESENTATIVE WOULD NOT SAY YES OR NO, JUST NOT NECESSARILY IS ALL HE WOULD SAY. I TOLD THEM REGARDLESS THAT THEY SHOULD DO A RECALL ON THE STANDARD YUKON DUE TO THE FACT THAT OURS DID THE SAME EXACT THING AS THE YUKON XL HAS BEEN RECALLED FOR AND THAT THIS WAS A LIFE OR DEATH TYPE FAILURE IN THE RIGHT CIRCUMSTANCES (IE; DRIVING ON THE ROAD WHEN THE FAILURE OCCURRED). GMC REQUESTED THAT I TAKE MY YUKON TO THE DEALER AND FIND OUT EXACTLY WHAT HAD BROKE. I DROVE IT TO THE DEALER THE NEXT DAY (MORE SORE ARMS) AND LEFT IT FOR THEM TO DETERMINE THE DAMAGE THAT HAD BEEN DONE. THE DEALER GOT BACK TO ME AND TOLD ME THAT THE POWER STEERING PUMP, SHAFT, ACTUATOR, AS WELL AS THE MOUNTING BRACKET HAD FAILED. THE DEALER HAD TALKED TO THE LOCAL GMC REPRESENTATIVE AND THEY DECIDED THAT THEY WOULD HELP WITH THE COST OF THE REPAIR. THEY HOWEVER TOLD US THAT THEY WERE NOT BUYING THE PART OR THE LABOR BUT THEY WOULD OFFER $200 TOWARD THE COST OF THE REPAIR AND WE WOULD HAVE TO COME UP WITH THE BALANCE $350 FOR A TOTAL OF $550 TO REPAIR. I AM ALSO CURIOUS IF GMC WILL BE REPLACING MY BROKEN PARTS WITH THE EXACT SAME PARTS THAT ARE DESTINED TO BREAK AGAIN IN THE FUTURE. I WOULD EXPECT UPGRADED PARTS, BUT MAYBE THEY JUST WANT OUR BUSINESS AGAIN A YEAR OR TWO WHEN IT BREAKS AGAIN, THAT IS, IF WE LIVE THROUGH IT NEXT TIME. *JB
THE POWER STEERING PUMP FAILED WHILE DRIVING IN THE MOUNTAINS. FORTUNATELY NOT WHILE ON THE CURVY, SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN ROADS. THE VEHICLE REQUIRED TOWING DOWN THE MOUNTAIN TO THE NEAREST GMC DEALER. THE DEALER REPLACED THE PUMP AND CHARGED $200. MUCH INCONVEIENCE WAS INCURRED, WE HAD TO BE RETRIVED FROM THE MOUNTAINS(65 MILES), TAKEN TO THE DEALER BY OTHERS TO RETRIVE VEHICLE, ETC. THERE'S A RECALL(ID 05V005000) OF 98,221 OF THIS EXACT MODEL AND YEAR FOR THE EXACT SAME FAILURE. GMC CLAIMS MY VEHICLE IS NOT COVERED BY THIS RECALL AND WILL NOT REIMBURSE ME THE $200, WHICH DOES NOT INCLUDE THE SHUTTLE COST FROM THE MOUNTAINS TO HOME AND OTHER INCIDENTALS.
WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH POWER STEERING AND BRAKES FAILED. DRIVER WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, AND PULLED OVER. DRIVER TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER FOR INSPECTION, AND MECHANIC DETERMINED THAT THE HYDRAULIC PUMP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. *AK THE CONSUMER STATED THAT NO WARNING WAS GIVEN PRIOR TO THE FAILURE. THE CONSUMER WAS TOLD THAT HIS VEHICLE WAS 1 OF 198 THAT ARE BEING RECALLED. NO RECALL WAS FOUND. *TC
I SPOKE WITH A LARRY AT THE NHTSA BACK IN FEBRUARY OF THIS YEAR. FAXED HIM A COPY OF THE BILL I HAD FOR THE POWER STEERING IN MY YUKON XL SAYS THERE WAS GOING TO BE MORE INVESTIGATING AND THIS RECALL FOR THE POWER STEERING MAY BE EXPANDED TO MY TRUCK..THE 1500 SERIES BUT I HAVEN'T HEARD ANYTHING. JUST A FUNNY THING THAT THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED TO ME THE POWER STEERING CUT OUT IN THE MIDDLE OF A TURN, BUT IT DOESN'T CONCERN THE 1500. *NM
I HAVE YOUR CAMPAIGN ID#05V005000 RECALL DATE: 1/5/2005 I HAVE 2000 GMC YUKON XL, [XXX],[XXX], [XXX], [XXX], [XXX], MY POWER STEERING CUT OUT ON MY ON 1/19/05 I SAW THIS RECALL ON YOUR WEBSITE, CALLED GM, THEY CAN SEE THIS, AND SINCE THE RECALLS AREN'T GOING OUT FOR AT LEAST ANOTHER WEEK OR SO AND MY VIN# ISN'T LINKED TO IT THEY CAN'T AUTHORIZED REPAIR. I DROVE FOR A FEW DAYS WITHOUT THE POWER STEERING AND THEN RENTED A CAR, I CAN NO LONGER AFFORD THE RENTAL AND NEED MY TRUCK FIXED. IT IS PRESENTLY TODAY(1/25/05) AT MCGUIRE PONTIAC IN LITTLE FALLS NJ (973-785-2220) AND I JUST GAVE THE GO AHEAD TO FIX IT. I DON'T REALLY HAVE THIS $800.00 TO DO THIS AND GM IS DOING AN ESCALATION REPORT TO SEE IF THEY CAN SPEED UP THINGS BUT THAT WILL TAKE A FEW DAYS. I CAN'T WAIT THIS LONG. I DON'T SEE WHY IF A 2000 GMC YUKON XL IS ONE OF THE VEHICLES AFFECTED WHY IT IS TAKING SO LONG TO APPROVE. WHILE MAKING A SHARP TURN, THE DRIVER HEARD A RATTLE NOISE AND VIBRATION. THE TURN COULD BE AS SIMPLE AS MAKING A RIGHT/LEFT WHILE DRIVING SLOWLY. THE DEALER HAS REPLACED THE STEERING SHAFT TWICE AND PROBLEM IS STILL OCCURRING. PLEASE PROVIDE FURTHER INFORMATION. *PH

LACK OF LUBRICATION IN TIR ROD ENDS CAUSED RUBBING/GROWLING NOISE IN THE FRONT END ESPECIALLY WHEN TURNING, EACH ROD TOOK 10 SHOTS OF GREASE AS COMPARED TO THE USUAL 2 SHOTS, CONSUMER BELIEVES THE CORRECTIVE ACTION INDICATES LACK OF OR NO LUBRICATION EXISTED AT TIME OF DELIVERY. NLM

STEERING WHEEL WILL NOT RETURN TO CENTER STICKSWHEN MAKING HARD LEFT TURN AND RIGHT TURN HAS BEEN IN SHOP I WAS TOLD IT DID THAT AND THE NEW 2001 WILL NOT DO THAT IT HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP TWO OR THREE TIMES I FEEL THAT SOME ONE WILL GET HURT IF THIS IS NOT CORRECTED THANK YOU. *AK
