I HAVE TAKEN MY CAR INTO HYUNDAI 3 TIMES FOR THE SAME REPAIR ON THE STEERING COLUMN. I HAVE CLICKING AND CHUNKING IN THE STEERING WHEEL AND NOW MY KEY WILL NOT RELEASE. I WAS TOLD THIS TIME BY HYUNDAI THAT IT WOULD COST ME 150.00 FOR DIAGNOSTIC AND THOUSANDS IF IT ISNT A RELATED ISSUE. THIS CAR IS A LEMON, AND IM STUCK WITH IT.
STEERING WHEEL KNOCK AND VIBRATIONS AT HIGH SPEEDS. STEERING COUPLER FAILURE.
TOOK MY 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA IN TO THE DEALER FOR THE ENGINE SEIZING RECALL IN APRIL 2016 AND THEY RECOMMENDED I REPLACE MY STEERING COUPLER. I HAD NOT NOTICED ANYTHING WRONG WITH IT AT THAT TIME SO I DECIDED TO WAIT. I AM TAKING IT IN TODAY TO HAVE IT REPLACED BECAUSE THE STEERING WHEEL IS VERY LOOSE AND IS MAKING A CLICKING NOISE WHEN I TURN IT. THE CAR IS NOT IMMEDIATELY RESPONSIVE TO TURNING IN THE PAST FEW DAYS. I HAVE SEEN NUMEROUS PEOPLE COMPLAINING ABOUT THE SAME ISSUE WITH THE SAME MODEL YEAR CAR ON THE HYUNDAI FORUMS. I CHECKED MY VIN AND THERE IS NOT A RECALL FOR THIS. THERE SHOULD BE IF THE CAR CAN BECOME UNRESPONSIVE TO SOMEONE TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA. WHENEVER THE STEERING WHEEL WAS TURNED, A LOUD CLICKING NOISE WAS HEARD FROM THE STEERING COLUMN. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS A KNOWN ISSUE AND RECOMMENDED THAT THE STEERING COLUMN BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.
AIR BAG LIGHT IS CONSTANTLY ON AND CAR HAS NOT BEEN IN ANY ACCIDENTS. CONCERNED THAT AIRBAG WILL NOT PROPERLY FUNCTION IF NEEDED. HYUNDAI WANTS BETWEEN $ 400 AND $ 900 TO FIX ISSUE. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE AND SEVERAL OTHER 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA OWNERS HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM.
STARTED TO HEAR (AND FEEL) A "CLUNKING" WHEN I TURNED THE STEERING WHEEL. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT A PLASTIC COUPLING WAS WORN/BROKEN AND IT WILL COST $400 TO REPAIR (!!) THIS VEHICLE HAS LESS THAN 46K MILES ON IT AND HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT OR ABUSED AND YET....I'M ON THE HOOK TO PAY FOR THE REPAIRS. I FEEL THAT THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL ISSUE.
THE STEERING COLUMN IS SHAKING IF YOU HIT A BUMP . CRUISE CONTROL AND THE HORN DOES NOT WORK NOW
THERE IS A CLICKING OR CLUCKING SOUND WHEN GOING OVER A SLIGHT BUMP IN THE ROAD AND THE STEERING WHEEL MAKES A CLICKING NOISE WHEN TURNING ALONG WITH A SLIGHT GIVE IN THE STEERING WHEEL.
I HAVE EXCESSIVE FREE PLAY IN MY STEERING WHEEL WHILE THE CAR IS STATIONARY AND MY STEERING WHEEL VIBRATES AND SHAKES WHILE I DRIVE THE AT HIGH SPEEDS OR CHANGING LANES. ALSO MY SUSPENSION FEELS LOOSE WHEN GOING OVER BUMPY ROADS.
STEERING HAS EXCESSIVE PLAY AND MAKES A CLUNKING NOISE WHEN STEERING LEFT OR RIGHT. THERE IS ALSO A LOUD CLATTERING NOISE WHEN DRIVING OVER BUMPS. *TR
LIKE MANY OTHER REPORTED COMPLAINTS ON THE 2011 SONATA, I HAVE EXPERIENCED LOOSENING OF THE STEERING WHEEL, WITH THE CLICKING SOUND WHEN TURNING. TOOK TO THE DEALER WHO CHARGED ME $125 TO TELL ME WHAT I ALREADY KNEW - THE STEERING COUPLER WAS BAD AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED IMMEDIATELY. THE SERVICE ADVISOR INDICATED IT WAS DEFINITELY A SAFETY ISSUE THAT SHOULD BE FIXED IMMEDIATELY. FOR $365. CLEARLY, THERE IS A WELL ESTABLISHED PROBLEM WITH THESE VEHICLES AND A SAFETY RECALL SHOULD BE ISSUED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
WHILE DRIVING, THE STEERING COLUMN AREA RATTLES AND MAKES NOISES. WHILE STEERING ON A TURN AT A STREET OR GENTLY AT A SLOW SPEED (LIKE IN MY DRIVEWAY), THE STEERING WHEEL DOES NOT FEEL LIKE IT USED TO AND IT CLICKS. IN 25 YEARS OF DRIVING VEHICLES, I HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED THIS DEFECT OR SAFETY ISSUE.
HAD ISSUES OF KNOCKING/RATTLING NOISE WHILE DRIVING OR HITTING BUMPS. DEALER TOLD ME IT WAS THE STEERING SPRING COUPLING. HAD IT REPLACED AND LESS THAN ONE YEAR, THE PROBLEM HAS ARISEN AGAIN. AT FIRST, THE RATTLING SOUND WOULD BE HEARD ONLY WHILE DRIVING OVER SMALL SPEED BUMPS OR UNEVEN TERRAINS SUCH AS A BRICK DRIVEWAY, BUT NOW IT CAN BE FELT AND HEARD WHILE DRIVING EITHER ON THE FREEWAY OR LOCAL. THERE IS ALSO A CLICKING NOISE WHEN TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL TO THE RIGHT OR LEFT. AGAIN, THIS PART WAS REPLACED LESS THAN ONE YEAR AGO FOR $300+ AND THE PROBLEM HAS ARISEN AGAIN.
THE FLEXIBLE COUPLING (PART # 56315-2K000) FAILED. HAD TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP DUE TO LACK OF STEERING CONTROL. HYUNDAI REFUSES TO WARRANTY OR RECALL THE PART EVEN THOUGH THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE HAVE POSTED THE SAME COMPLAINT ON THIS WEBSITE. $260 REPAIR FOR A $6.00 PART ($253.00 LABOR). THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE ON THEIR PART TO NOT WARRANTY OR RECALL A DEFECTIVE PART.
I BROUGHT MY CAR IN FOR THIS RECALL AND NOW MONTHS LATER THE AIRBAG LIGHT INDICATES A PROBLEM. I WAS TOLD THAT SEAT WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED FOR $1200. THIS CAR HAS BEEN NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS
FAILURE OF THE STEERING COLUMN FLEXIBLE COUPLING.- I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN THIS OCCURRED- THIS CAUSED MY CAR TO LOSE DRIVING CONTROL - I HAD KNOCKING SOUND IN THE STEERING WHEEL AND IT WAS VERY DIFFICULT TO CONTROL THE DRIVING. THE PART IS A SMALL RUBBER COUPLING THAT IS LOCATED INSIDE OF THE POWER STEERING ASSIST MOTOR. THE PART APPEARS TO BE THE MANUFACTURER DEFAULT (IT WAS MADE OF SOFT RUBBER) - HYUNDAI HAS DEVELOPED A NEW REPLACEMENT PART THAT IS MADE OF A HARDER RUBBER THE NEW PART # 56315-2K000-FFF. EVERYONE THAT HAS A HYUNDAI SONATA 2011 SHOULD HAVE THIS FLEXIBLE COUPLING REPLACED TO PREVENT LOSING CONTROL OF THE AUTOMOBILE. AT A MINIMUM CAR OWNER SHOULD BE NOTIFIED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF THIS HAPPENING WHEN DRIVING. THIS DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE IN NORMAL ROUTINE MAINTENANCE ISSUE. *TR

DRIVING DOWN A RESIDENTIAL STREET AT APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH WHEN THE SUN/MOONROOF SHATTERED. NO DEBRIS STRUCK THE ROOF. *TR
THE HYUNDAI DEALER REPLACED THE STEERING COUPLER ON MY 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA ON OCTOBER 26, 2016. HE SAID WHEN DRIVING THE CAR INTO THE MAINTENANCE GARAGE, HE HEARD THE STEERING COUPLER MAKING NOISE, CHECKED IT, AND FOUND THAT IT WAS FAULTY AND WAS A SAFETY HAZARD. THE CAR HAS 66,000 MILES ON IT AND IS DRIVEN MOSTLY AT LOW SPEEDS IN CITY TRAFFIC. IN VIEW OF THE DRIVING CONDITIONS AND LIMITED MILEAGE, I WONDER IF THE FAILURE OF THE STEERING COUPLER SUGGESTS A DESIGN FLAW. *TR
OUR 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA GLS 2.4 ENGINE CAUGHT FIRE AS MY WIFE WAS RETURNING HOME FROM TAKING OUR SON TO SCHOOL. MY WIFE SMELLED GASOLINE AND THEN IT BURST INTO FLAMES. THIS WAS THE SECOND REPLACEMENT ENGINE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY AND HAD LESS THAN 6000 MILES ON IT. HYUNDAI MALL OF GEORGIA HAS PERFORMED ALL WARRANTY SERVICE WORK ON THIS VEHICLE. AFTER THE SECOND ENGINE AND MANY OTHER WARRANTY REPAIRS TRIED TO ENVOKE THE LEMON LAW BUT WAS DENIED BY HYUNDIA CASE #9412898.
STEERING BEGAN TO MAKE A CLICKING NOISE, THEN PROGRESSED OVER A FEW DAYS TO A THUMPING NOISE, THEN STEERING BECAME INCREASINGLY LESS RESPONSIVE AND NOISY WHEN DRIVING OR GOING OVER BUMPS. *TR
ON 10/25/2017, I WAS STOPPED IN TRAFFIC IN LEFT HAND TURN LANE WAITING FOR THE LIGHT TO TURN GREEN. WHEN LIGHT CHANGE I STARTED TO MOVE FORWARD AND FELT A SHUTTER IN THE CAR. I STOPPED THE CAR BEFORE MAKING THE LEFT TO ENTER INTO THE INTERSECTION AND ALL OF THE DASH BOARD LIGHTS CAME ON, THERE WAS A SMALL AMOUNT OF SMOKE CAME OUT FROM UNDER THE HOOD AND THE ENGINE WAS DEAD. TRIED TO RESTART THE ENGINE TO NO EFFECT. IF I DID NOT STOP AT THE CAR I WOULD HAVE STALLED WHILE MAKING A LEFT IN THE MIDDLE OF A FOUR LANE ROAD (THE INTERSECTION OF RT 1 & SOUTHAMPTON RD) I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO MY MECHANIC WHO INFORMED ME THAT THE ENGINE LOCKED UP AND THE STARTER WAS MELTED.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA. WHEN THE CONTACT RETRIEVED THE VEHICLE AFTER A RECALL REPAIR FOR THE STEERING, THE STEERING WHEEL FAILED TO WORK PROPERLY. THE STEERING WHEEL MADE ABNORMAL NOISES WHEN IT WAS TURNED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE STEERING WHEEL RECALL REPAIR WAS PERFORMED WITHOUT TOUCHING THE STEERING WHEEL SYSTEM. THE FAILURE OCCURRED ONLY AFTER THE RECALL REPAIR WAS PERFORMED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 70,000.

THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 10V457000 (STEERING), ALTHOUGH THE CONTACT EXPERIENCED THE SAME FAILURE LISTED IN THE RECALL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 110,000.
ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS MY VEHICLE HAS BEEN SERVICED BY A HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP IN SOUTH FLORIDA. AFTER "REPAIRING" THE AIR BAG SIGNAL, IT HAS REAPPEARED ON AT LEAST FOUR TRIPS TO THE DEALER. AFTER MULTIPLE REPAIR (INCLUDING THE REPLACEMENT OF THE CABLES) THE FOLLOWING ISSUES STILL OCCUR; 1) THE OIL INDICATOR LIGHTS AND THE TACHOMETER LIGHTS GO ON AND OFF PERIODICALLY, 2) THE AIR CONDITIONER GOES OFF, THE COMES BACK AGAIN IN FEW MINUTES, 3) THE LOW AIR LIGHT COMES FOR MY TIRES, 4) ENGINE LIGHT, AND 5) SPEEDOMETER INDICATOR WENT UP AND DOWN WITH THE VEHICLE TRAVELING AT THE SAME SPEED. THE VEHICLE IS CLOSE TO 76,000 MILES. THE ABOVE INDICATED EVENTS OCCURRED PRIMARILY WHILE DRIVING IN CITY STREETS. HOWEVER, SOME OF THEM WERE EXPERIENCED IN HIGHWAY TRAFFIC.
LOOSE STEERING SHAFT. STEERING WHEEL I S SLIGHTLY LOOSE AND BEING REFUSED WARRANTY ON THIS PART IN DEALERSHIP. AS I HAVE EXTEDED WARRANTY
THE ENGINE JUST DIED WHILE CROSSING THE RFK BRIDGE, NYC. I NOTICED AS THE CAR WAS SLOWING DOWN AND I PRESSED ON THE ACCELERATOR TO GAIN SPEED. NOTHING HAPPENED AND THE INSTRUMENT PANEL WAS LIT UP WITH WARNINGS. I THEN PUT IT ON NEUTRAL AND LIGHTLY PRESSED ON THE BREAKS TO START THE ENGINE AGAIN, NOTHING HAPPENED. I SUBSEQUENTLY LOST POWER STEERING AND BREAKS. AFTER THE INITIAL STOP IN A DANGEROUS POSITION, I WAS ABLE TO ROLL THE CAR TO A NEARBY CONSTRUCTION SITE (OFF RAMP TO HARLEM RIVER DRIVE SHOULDER) BEHIND SOME TRAFFIC BARRELS BUT SCRAPED UP AGAINST THE CONCRETE BARRIER AS THE CAR LOST POWER STEERING AND BREAKS AND WAS HARD TO MANEUVER. I TRIED STARTING THE ENGINE AGAIN BUT IT WOULD NOT. I ALSO OPENED THE HOOD AND SAW SMOKE COMING FROM UNDERNEATH THE HOOD. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO A NEARBY DEALERSHIP. I HAVE INCLUDED THE SERVICE INTAKE FORM IN THE ATTACHMENTS.
CAR MAKES POPPING OR CLICKING SOUND PARTICULARLY WHEN BACKING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE AND TURNING THE WHEEL. TOOK THE VEHICLE TO HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY SAID IT WAS A STEERING COUPLER THAT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. QUOTED $293.16. WAS TOLD THIS COULD BECOME A SAFETY ISSUE SINCE IT CAN AFFECT STEERING AND ABS FUNCTION. SEARCHED THE PROBLEM ON THE INTERNET AND IT LOOKS LIKE A FAIRLY COMMON ISSUE. MY CAR HAS JUST UNDER 74,000 MILES. WHY IS THIS NOT A RECALL SINCE IT CLEARLY ISN'T NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR.
WHEN TURNING STEARIN WHEEL HERE CLANKING NOICE . TOOK TO HYUNDAI AND TOLD IT SO STEERING WHEEL COUPLER . SAID VERY COMMEN PROBLEM . SHOULD BE A RECALL. IT IT COST 585 TO REPAIR . IF THE DEALERSHIP KNOWS IT'S A BIG ISSUE MAYBE IT SHOULD BE A RECALL AND NOT COST ME !!

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE FLEX COUPLING NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE ISSUE. THERE IS A CLICKING AND RATTELING IN THE STEERING COLUMN WHEN TURNING (OR WHEN GOING OVER A BUMP). AND THERE IS A SLIGHT GRIP OR PULL FROM THE COLUMN ONTO THE STEERING WHEEL AT CERTAIN DEGREES OF ITS ROTATION. DEFINITELY A POTENTIAL SAFETY ISSUE. I BELIEVE IT ORIGINATES WITH THE STEERING COUPLER. ONLINE SEARCH REVEALS THIS IS A WIDESPREAD ISSUE WITH THE MODEL, HOWEVER THERE HAS BEEN NO RECALL.
STEERING WHEEL MAKES LOUD CLICKING SOUNDS WHEN TURNED OR WHEN THE VEHICLE GOES OVER A BUMP OR DOWN A HILL. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE TODAY AND WAS TOLD THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE MECHANICS OF THE STEERING COLUMN.
AIRBAG LIGHT SUDDENLY CAME ON AND WILL NOT GO OFF, STAYS ON CONTINUSLELY. CAR IS UP FOR INSPECTION IN A FEW MONTHS AND WILL NOT PASS A SAFETY INSPECTION. HAVE RESEARCHED THIS ONLINE AND FOUND OVER 100 COMPLAINTS FOR THIS PROBLEM. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE AS IF I AM IN AN ACCIDENT THE AIRBAG WILL NOT DEPLOY.(OR WORSE MAY HAPPEN)
PURCHASED HYUNDAI SONATA MAY 22, 2016 ENGINE WAS FAILING HYUNDAI IS FIXING IT NOW. HAD METAL PARTS IN MY OIL. KNOCKING SOUND. IT STALLED WHILE I WAS DRIVING IT ON THE STREET. HYUNDAI SAID IT COULD BE UP TO FOUR MONTHS TO FIX THE CAR. I AM NOW DRIVING A RENTAL CAR AND PAYING CARMAX FOR MY HYUNDAI.
DRIVING AND MAKING TURNS CREATES A RATTLE IN THE STEERING WHEEL AND CLUNKING SOUND STOPPED AT BRAKES PLUS AND FOUND SUBSTANCE ON THE OUTSIDE OF THESTERRING COUPLER. WAS TOLD THAT SHOULD NOT BE THERE.

ANY SLIGHT TURNING OF MY STEERING WHEEL RESULTS IN A HARSH CLICKING SOUND WHETHER I GO LEFT OR RIGHT. ALSO IF THERE'S A SLIGHT UNEVENNESS TO THE PAVEMENT, THERE'S A VERY SCARY RATTLING SOUND COMING FROM THE STEERING SHAFT. I HAVE SEEN LOTS OF OTHER COMPLAINTS ONLINE, BUT HEARD THE ORIGINAL RECALL DOES NOT AFFECT MY VEHICLE. THIS IS A HORRIBLE SIGN AND I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY TO FIX THIS ISSUE. THIS ISSUE OCCURS IN MOTION STATIONARY ON ANY STREET OR HIGHWAY. IT IS ALL THE TIME AND GETTING PROGRESSIVELY WORSE.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO SOUTHERN STATES SUBARU OF RALEIGH (2511 WAKE FOREST RD, RALEIGH, NC 27608 (888) 439-5154) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED WITH A FAULTY ENGINE THAT NEEDED REPLACEMENT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS SERVICED PER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V568000 (ENGINE). UPON RETRIEVING THE VEHICLE FROM THE DEALER, A CLICKING SOUND WAS HEARD COMING FROM THE STEERING COLUMN AND UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONTACT OF A RECALL FOR THE STEERING COUPLER, BUT THE VEHICLE WAS OVER THE MILEAGE AND COULD NOT BE REPAIRED PER THE MANUFACTURER RECALL. THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 16V190000 (STEERING), BUT WAS UNSURE IF THE RECALL WAS SERVICED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND REFFERED THE CONTACT TO HYUNDAI AWARDS TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER INQUIRED OF AN ESTIMATE OF THE REPAIRS. WITHOUT AN ESTIMATE, THE CONTACT QUOATED $500. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TAKEN TO JOHNSON HYUNDAI OF CARY (5000 OLD RALEIGH RD, CARY, NC 27511(919) 439-2059) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED WITH A STEERING COUPLER AND AXLE FAILURE. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE AXLE DAMAGE OCCURRED AT THE TIME OF THE ENGINE REPLACEMENT. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER AGAIN WITH A MORE ACCURATE REPAIR COST OF $800, AND WAS INFORMED THAT THEY WOULD ONLY PAY $500 TOWARDS THE REPAIR. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 90,043.
THE STEERING COLUMN COUPLER IS CLANKING AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED PER HYUNDAI DEALER'S SERVICE DEPARTMENT.
THE STEERING COLUMN SEEMS LOOSE AND EVERY TIME I RUN OVER A BUMP WHETHER SMALL OR BIG THERE IS A RATTLE THAT SEEMS TO COME FROM THE STEERING COLUMN SECTION. AND IT SEEMS TO BE GETTING WORSE. IT IS ACTUALLY DESCRIBED IN A RECALL FROM 10/2010. SOMETHING IS LOOSE IN THERE. I HAVE SEEN THAT IT'S MORE RECENT TO IN THE COMPLAINTS. CAN THE CLOSED RECALL BE REOPENED?
THE STEERING WHEEL CLICKS WHEN TURNING, DOESN'T RESPOND WELL. WHILE IN DEALERSHIP FOR ANOTHER ISSUE, WAS INFORMED THAT THE STEERING COUPLER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, AND THE TECHNICIAN SAID "IT'S JUST ONE OF THE 'PERKS' OF LIVING IN FLORIDA. THE WEATHER HERE JUST EATS THIS PART AWAY.". PROBLEM WITH HIS STATEMENT IS THAT WE JUST MOVED HERE A FEW MONTHS AGO AND, UNTIL THEN, THE CAR WAS GARAGE KEPT IN THE NORTHEAST, SO HIS REASONING DOESN'T HOLD WATER. ACCORDING TO WHAT I'VE READ, THOUSANDS OF OTHER 2011 SONATAS ARE EXPERIENCING THIS SAME ISSUE. WHY HASN'T THIS BEEN COVERED UNDER A RECALL? I WAS TOLD BY THE TECHNICIAN THAT THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION AND IT SHOULD BE REPAIRED ASAP...AND HYUNDAI WOULD ONLY CHARGE ME $375 TO REPAIR IT "AND MOST LIKELY SAVE YOUR LIFE"...AS PER THE TECH.
ON 8/17/15, MY VEHICLE WITH 59,792 MILES, STALLED SEVERAL TIMES WHILE DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY. I WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE, BUT COULD NOT DRIVE ABOVE 20 MPH. THIS LASTED FOR ABOUT 15 MILES THEN MY VEHICLE DROVE NORMALLY. I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO MY LOCAL HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP AND THEY COULDN'T DETERMINE WHAT CAUSED THIS ISSUE. ON 9/28/15, MY VEHICLE WITH 60,256 MILES, STALLED AGAIN WHILE DRIVING ALMOST CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. I COULDN'T GET MY VEHICLE STARTED AGAIN AND THE ENGINE WAS SMOKING. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO THE SAME LOCAL HYUNDAI DEALER. THE DEALER REPLACED THE ENGINE (RE MANUFACTURED ASSY-SUB R) UNDER WARRANTY AS PER NHTSA CAMPAIGN #V-568, BECAUSE IT WAS SEIZED. SEE ATTACHED INVOICE. ON 9/12/16, MY VEHICLE WITH 68,993 MILES, FAILED TO START AFTER A 10 MILE DRIVE. THE STARTER ENGAGED, BUT COULDN'T TURN THE ENGINE. AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS, THE ENGINE BEGAN SMOKING AND THE STARTER WOULD NO LONGER ENGAGE THE ENGINE. MY VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE SAME LOCAL DEALERSHIP. I WAS INFORMED THAT THE STARTER WAS BAD AND IT NEEDED REPLACEMENT. SEE ATTACHED INVOICE. THEY ALSO PERFORMED RECALL #132, INSPECT ENGINE. MY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE ENGINE LOCKING UP CAUSING THE STARTER TO GO BAD WERE DISMISSED BY THE DEALER. ON 10/8/16, I PERFORMED AN OIL CHANGE ON MY VEHICLE WITH 69,252 MILES. THIS IS THE SECOND OIL CHANGE SINCE THE RE MANUFACTURED ENGINE WAS INSTALLED. I HAVE ALWAYS DONE MY OWN OIL CHANGE USING MOBIL 1 OIL AND USUALLY A CLOSED TYPE DRAIN PAN. THIS TIME I USED AN OPEN STYLE DRAIN PAN. AFTER PERFORMING THE OIL CHANGE, I DRAINED THE USED OIL AND DISCOVERED NUMEROUS PIECES OF METAL IN THE BOTTOM OF THE PAN. SEE PHOTO. I TOOK THE USED OIL, DRAIN PAN, FILTER TO THE SAME LOCAL DEALER. THE SERVICE WRITER TOOK A REPORT AND CALLED ME SEVERAL DAYS LATER. SHE SAID THAT HYUNDAI WOULD NOT REPLACE MY ENGINE AT THIS TIME. RECENTLY, MY VALVES/LIFTERS HAVE STARTED TO TICK LOUDLY AT TIMES. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 2 MPH, THE STEERING COLUMN MADE A LOUD CLUNKING NOISE. AT 40 MPH, THE CONTACT STATED THAT IT WAS DIFFICULT TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL AND THAT THE VEHICLE JERKED TO THE RIGHT OF THE ROAD. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 105,000.
AFTER TAKING MY CAR TO A DEALER FOR OIL CHANGE AND TIRE ROTATION, THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON AND IT'S REMAINED ON FOR SEVERAL WEEKS.
STEERING WHEEL COUPLER GOING BAD PER DEALER. HAD NOTICED THE STEERING WHEEL CLUNKING WHILE TURNING. PER DEALER NO CAMPAIGN AND OVER $400 TO REPLACE. THE VEHICLE HAS 84,000 MILES.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA. WHILE PULLING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE, A CLICKING SOUND EMERGED FROM THE STEERING WHEEL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER TWICE WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE STEERING COUPLER FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 107,000.
VEHICLE IN MOTION AND INVOLVED IN HEAD ON COLLISION. THE SEAT BELT CAUSED ADDITIONAL INJURIES. CT SHOWS ACUTE LEFT ABDOMINAL WALL HERNIA. TORSO INJURIES INCLUDE THE CHEST AND ABDOMEN. SURGERY NEEDED FOR REPAIR OF TRAUMATIC LEFT FLANK HERNIA DUE TO SEAT BELT INJURY. BREAST TISSUE DAMAGE DUE TO SEAT BELT INJURY.
I WOULD LIKE TO BRING TO YOUR ATTENTION, A DANGEROUS SITUATION WITH MY 2011 SONATA. THE SITUATION BECAME CRITICAL WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL STARTED TO HAVE SEVERE VIBRATIONS LAST WEEK AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS (70MPH). THE ISSUE WHICH I HAVE ASKED HYUNDAI SERVICE (HUB HYUNDAI IN HOUSTON) OVER THE 1 1/2 YEAR, IS THAT THE STEERING WHEEL HAD STARTED TO DEVELOP PLAY WHEN TURNING. ASIDE FROM THE LOOSE STEERING, THE RATTLE IN THE STEERING WHEEL, THE RATTLE (LIKE A NUT IN A COFFEE CAN) WHEN GOING OVER ROUGH PAVEMENT BECAME NOTICEABLY LOUDER. HYUNDAI STATES THAT MY CAR FOR THIS ISSUE IS NOT COVERED IN ANY RECALL. I JUST HAD THE PLASTIC COUPLING REPLACED BY FIRESTONE SERVICE (INVOICE ATTACHED). THE SERVICE MECHANIC STATED THAT THE GEAR TEETH WERE SEVERELY GROUND AWAY, WILL ULTIMATELY RESULT IN DESTROYED COUPLING AN DISENGAGEMENT OF STEERING, A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. THE ATTACHED PICTURES SHOW THE COUPLING, BOTH NEW AND WITH THE GEAR TOOTH GROUND AWAY. I URGE NHTSA TO MANDATE THAT HYUNDAI INITIATE AN IMMEDIATE RECALL OF ALL VEHICLES WITH THIS COMPONENT. WHEN I WENT IN FOR AN OIL CHANGE AND BRAKE NOISE COMPLAINT (WHICH IS ANOTHER CONSTANT PROBLEM), I WAS QUESTIONED IF I WAS HEARING CLICKING IN THE STEERING WHEEL WHEN TURNING. I HADN'T. I WAS TOLD THAT THIS WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE 2011 AND 2012 SONATAS' STEERING COUPLER, AND IF I DIDN'T HEAR THE NOISE, I SOON WOULD SO I SHOULD FIX IT (~$360). I ASKED IF THERE WAS A RECALL, SINCE IT SEEMED TO BE ENOUGH OF A PROBLEM THAT IT WAS A KNOWN PROBLEM AT THE DEALERSHIP. THEY SAID THERE WAS NO RECALL, BUT I SHOULD GET IT REPLACED. I HADN'T HEARD ANY NOISES, SO I DECLINED THE REPAIR. LITTLE DID I REALIZE, IT WOULD BEGIN THE VERY NEXT DAY. MY STEERING WHEEL NOW RATTLES AND CLICKS EVERY TIME I GO OVER EVEN A SMALL BUMP IN THE ROAD, OR TURN MY STEERING WHEEL, AND IT IS GETTING WORSE. I EVEN CALLED HYUNDAI, AND THEY DIDN'T SEEM TO KNOW WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT. IF THE DEALERSHIP HAS SEEN THIS IN MULTIPLE CARS, AND THERE ARE PLENTY OTHER SIMILAR COMPLAINTS ONLINE, WHY IS THIS NOT A RECALL? WHY ARE THE OWNERS BEING RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS REPAIR?
