CLOCK SPRING ASSEMBLY INSIDE STEERING COLUMN TO DEPLOY AIRBAGS IS MALFUNCTIONING AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED IN ORDER FOR AIRBAGS TO DEPLOY.
I NOTICED A CLUNKING SOUND WHEN TURING THE STEERING WHEEL. AFTER RESEARCHING THIS PROBLEM I FOUND THIS TO BE COMMON COMPLAINT DUE TO POWER STEERING COUPLING GOING BAD, SONATA HAS A TSB 14-ST-002-1 REGARDING THIS PROBLEM. THE TSB SAYS THERE IS NO STEERING PERFORMANCE ISSUES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS CONDITION. I STRONGLY DISAGREE WITH THIS STATEMENT. THE DEGRADED COUPLER INTRODUCED PLAY OR WIGGLE ROOM IN THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE STEERING WHEEL AND THE FRONT TIRES. WHEN THE CAR IS PARKED, YOU CAN ROCK THE STEERING WHEEL BACK & FORTH TO HEAR THE CLUNKING NOISE. WHEN THIS IS DONE, YOU CAN TELL THE STEERING WHEEL WAS MOVING FURTHER THAN IT SHOULD WITHOUT THE WHEELS MOVING. ALSO YOU HEAR AND FEEL THE CLUNKING SOUND AT LOW SPEEDS TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL BACK AND FORTH. YOU CAN FEEL LOOSE PLAYING IN THE STEERING WHEEL BEFORE THE TIRES MOVE IN EITHER DIRECTION. I BELIEVE THIS ISSUE IS VERY MUCH A SAFETY CONCERN AND SHOULD BE A RECALL. ALSO I FEEL THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN PART OF THE SAFETY RECALL FOR THE COLUMN SHAFT ECU REPLACEMENT SINCE IT IS A SAFETY CONCERN ISSUE WITH THE STEERING SYSTEM
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE WAS A CLICKING NOISE COMING FROM THE STEERING WHEEL WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED. THE DEALER DIAGNOSED THAT THE STEERING COUPLER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 53,000.
SENSOR FOR AIRBAG IS ON AND I DON'T KNOW WHY. AIRBAG HAS NEVER DEPLOYED OR TAMPERED WITH.
I PURCHASED MY HYUNDAI SONATA ON 12/31/2010. IT HAS 39,000 MILES ON IT NOW. HENDRICK HYUNDAI OF CHARLESTON SC HAS INFORMED ME THE STEERING COLUMN COUPLER NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AND HAS QUOTED ME A REPAIR COST OF $243. I DECLINED THEIR OFFER OF REPAIR, BUT HAVE BECOME CONCERNED AS THE STEERING HAS BEGUN TO EXHIBIT AN INCREASINGLY LOOSE FEELING. FOLLOWING MY INQUIRY TO CONSUMER AFFAIRS AT HYUNDAI MOTOR AMERICA, I HAVE BEEN INFORMED THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN COVERED UNDER THEIR 5 YEAR 60,000 MILES WARRANTY, BUT SINCE MY VEHICLE IS BEYOND THE 5 YEAR PERIOD, THE WARRANTY DOES NOT APPLY. AS A RESULT OF MY INTERNET SEARCH, I HAVE FOUND THIS PART WAS PART OF A RECALL FOR VIN NUMBERS NOT INCLUDING MINE, AND THAT THERE HAVE BEEN NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS FILED WITH NHTSA ABOUT THIS ISSUE. I SUSPECT THE FAULT WITH THE PART FAILURE LIES WITH HYUNDAI, AND I RESENT HAVING TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR, WHICH I NOW INTEND TO HAVE THE DEALER PERFORM BECAUSE I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY RISK.. I FURTHER RESENT THAT HYUNDAI HAS NOT BEEN MORE PRO-ACTIVE ABOUT A REPAIR ISSUE THAT I SUSPECT COULD BE LIFE-THREATENING SHOULD STEERING BE LOST AT HIGHWAY SPEED, RESULTING IN A CRASH.
I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AND MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. THEN SUDDENLY THE ENGINE LOST ALL POWER AND WAS COMING TO A STALL. I WAS ABLE TO COAST OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE FREEWAY, AND HAD TO CALL A TOW TRUCK FROM THERE.
THE STEERING COLUMN MAKES A RATTLING NOISE WHEN CAR IS IN MOTION MAKING TURNS/BUMPS IN ROAD. I FEEL THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE/DEFECT THAT HYUNDAI SHOULD CORRECT AT THEIR EXPENSE. I HAVE HEARD OF THIS BECOMING A MAJOR ISSUE WITH THIS MODEL. I DO NOT FEEL THIS IS SOMETHING TO BE TAKEN LIGHTLY AS THIS IS NOT SOMETHING THAT WOULD BE CONSIDERED NORMAL WEAR. HYUNDAI IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM BUT IS NOT WILLING TO CORRECT THIS DEFECTED PART.
TAKATA RECALL.. MY CAR IS NOT NEW, BUT IT IS LESS THAN 6YRS OLD AND MY AIRBAG LIGHT IS ON (WILL NOT SHUT THE [XXX] OFF EITHER. I CONTACT HYUNDAI THEY SAID IT WAS THE CLOCK SPRING, WHICH WILL COST ME 400.93 DOLLARS TO FIX OR I WILL POSSIBLE DIE IN A CRASH. I FEEL THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL, BECAUSE THIS IS NOT WEAR AND TEAR THIS IS A BUILDER MISHAP...THE FACT THAT THIS SITUATION COULD CAUSE DEATH AND THEY WILL NOT FIX DUE TO SAFETY IS [XXX] INSANE...I QUEST THEY WILL NOT BE HAPPY UNTIL LAWSUITS COME IN PLACE DUE TO AIRBAGS NOT DEPLOYING (BECAUSE THE WARNING LIGHT WILL NOT ALWAYS COME ON, SO YOU WOULDN'T KNOW). THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE POWER STEERING COLUMN NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. DURING MY LAST SCHEDULED VEHICLE MAINTENANCE IN APRIL 2016, I EXPLICITLY COMMUNICATED MY CONCERNS TO THE HYUNDAI DEALER ABOUT MY ENGINE AND THE FACT THAT THE OIL LIGHT KEPT COMING ON WHEN I TRIED TO ACCELERATE AND WOULD GO OFF AS SOON AS I TOOK MY FEET OFF THE ACCELERATOR. I JUST FOUND OUT THROUGH LOCAL NEWS AND INFORMATION FROM ONLINE BLOGS THAT THIS WAS A SIGN OF ENGINE MANUFACTURING PROBLEMS ORIGINATING FROM HYUNDAI'S ALABAMA ENGINE MANUFACTURING PLANT. THE DEALER DID NOT INFORM ME THAT THE ENGINE IN MY VEHICLE WAS BEING RECALLED. INSTEAD, I WAS TOLD VIA THE MAINTENANCE REPORT THAT OIL LEVEL WAS LOW AND THERE WERE NO VISIBLE LEAKS. I HAVE RECEIPTS TO PROVE THAT I ADHERED TO ALL RECOMMENDED OWNER MAINTENANCE SERVICES AND HAVE BEEN DILIGENT ENOUGH TO SERVICE MY VEHICLE ACCORDING TO THE SERVICE SCHEDULE PRESCRIBED DURING VEHICLE PURCHASE. I HAVE STRONG REASONS TO BELIEVE HYUNDAI HAS NOT BEEN HONEST WITH ITS CUSTOMER. THIS BEING BECAUSE, RATHER THAN ELABORATE ON THE CAUSE AND SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM (I.E. HYUNDAI SONATA 2011-2012 ENGINE RECALL), INFORMATION WAS DELIBERATELY WITHHELD FROM ME BY HYUNDAI. I NEVER RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FROM THE DEALER DESPITE PURCHASING THE VEHICLE FROM AN AUTHORIZED HYUNDAI PRE-OWNED VEHICLE DEALER. I'M EVEN MORE FRUSTRATED BECAUSE THIS RECALL WAS ANNOUNCED IN SEPTEMBER 2015, 4 MONTHS AFTER I PURCHASED MY VEHICLE UNDER WARRANTY AND PAID EXTRA TO HAVE EXTENDED WARRANTY COVERAGE ADDED ON MY VEHICLE. IT'S NOW 7 MONTHS AFTER THE RECALL ANNOUNCEMENT AND I STILL HAVE NOT RECEIVED NOTICE OF THE RECALL FROM HYUNDAI. AS OF TODAY, 3 WEEKS AFTER MY VEHICLE STALLED ON THE ON-401 HIGHWAY WHILST DRIVING AT APPROX. 100KM/HR., I HAVE NOT HEARD BACK FROM HYUNDAI. I HAD TO COAST MY VEHICLE TO THE OUTSIDE SHOULDER OF THE BUSIEST HIGHWAY IN NORTH AMERICA AT 9:00PM. 3 WEEKS ON, I HAVE NO VEHICLE, NO REPAIR TIMELINE AND NO RESPONSE FROM HYUNDAI

THE VIN WAS INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V759000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC), BUT THE CONTACT HAD NOT BEEN NOTIFIED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED NOR REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 120,000. PARTS DISTRIBUTION DISCONNECT.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA. WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME DIFFICULT TO MANEUVER WITHOUT WARNING. THE FAILURE OCCURRED AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS SERVICED PER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 16V190000 (STEERING). THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE WORM SHAFT FLEX COUPLING NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 52,124.
BROUGHT THE CAR IN FOR THE STEERING RECALL AND THEY TELL ME THE STEERING COUPLER IS BAD WILL COST $400 TO REPLACE AND IS NOT COVERED UNDER THE RECALL. I SEE NUMEROUS PEOPLE ARE HAVING SERIOUS STEERING ISSUES BECAUSE OF THIS FAULTY PART. THE 2011 SONATA WITH 68,000 SHOULD NOT BE HAVING THIS ISSUE. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO VEHICLE TAIL LIGHT ASSEMBLY THREADED STUDS EMBEDDED INTO BRITTLE, BADLY CRACKED PLASTIC. *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED THE TAIL LIGHT ASSEMBLIES FELL UT OF THE BODY PANELS. THE CONSUMER BELIEVED, IT WAS A RESULT OF POOR QUALITY PLASTIC OR OVER TIGHTENING THE NUTS ON THE STUDS AT THE FACTORY. *JB

THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE FUNCTION BUTTONS ON THE STEERING WHEEL WERE INOPERABLE. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS EXPERIENCING THE SAME FAILURE AS DESCRIBED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 10V426000 (STEERING). THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, BUT WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 70,000.
WHAT I THOUGHT WAS JUST NORMAL 'SOUND' COMING FROM THE STEERING WHEEL/COLUMN HAS PROGRESSED TO LOUD NOISE IE TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL; GOING OVER POTHOLES/BUMPS AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, BUT VERY PROGRESSIVE IN LOW SPEEDS [CITY DRIVING]. THIS LOUD NOISE SEEMED TO REVERBERATE ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE DRIVER SIDE FRONT SUSPENSION. IT'S LIKE THERE'S 'PLAY' WHEN TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL BEFORE IT ENGAGES. 'CLICKING' SOUND IS VERY PRONOUNCED WHEN TURNING THE WHEEL FROM A STOP OR WHEN BACKING UP, THE FIRST TIME I TURN THE WHEEL. OR EVEN IF THE CAR IS STOPPED, TURNING THE WHEEL LEFT/RIGHT I CAN HEAR A PRONOUNCED 'CLICKING' SOUND, LIKE SOMETHING IS LOOSE IN THERE. IS THIS WHY THE CAR SOMETIMES VEER LEFT?I UNDERSTAND THERE IS AN ACTIVE RECALL BUT SHOULD MORE VIN BE COVERED WITH THIS. PLEASE HELP. *TR
ENGINE KNOCK/PING GETS LOUDER WITH INCREASING SPEEDS, CAR IS PART OF ENGINE RECALL BUT DEALER STATES MY ENGINE IS FINE, ABSOLUTELY NO REASON GIVEN TO ME WHY I HAVE AN ENGINE KNOCK. STEERING WHEEL STARTED VIOLENTLY SHAKING WHILE I WAS DRIVING
HEADLIGHTS FLICKER AND/OR SWITCH FROM LOW TO HIGH BEAMS WHEN USING TURN SIGNAL. THE TURN SIGNAL STALK CONTAINS THE ON/OFF/AUTO SWITCH FOR THE HEADLIGHTS AS WELL AS THE HIGH/LOW BEAM SELECTION. THIS PROBLEM HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES WHEN TURNING ON THE BLINKER OR EVEN WHEN THE TURN STALK RETURNS TO OFF AFTER COMPLETING THE TURN. IT APPEARS TO BE A SHORT OR BAD CONTACT IN THE TURN SIGNAL AND SEEMS TO ONLY HAPPEN WHEN THE TURN STALK IS ACTUALLY BEING MOVED OR MANIPULATED. THIS CAUSES THE HEADLIGHTS TO FLASH OR BLINK ON THE HIGH BEAMS AND WHEN THEY MOMENTARILY GO TO THE OFF POSITION THE DASH LIGHTS GO TO FULL INTENSITY (JUST LIKE DURING THE DAY WHEN THE LIGHTS ARE OFF).
RECENTLY I NOTICED THE STEERING IN MY 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA HAD DEVELOPED QUITE A BIT OF "PLAY" IN IT. WHEN TAKING MY SONATA IN FOR AN UNRELATED RECALL I ASKED THE SERVICE ADVISOR ABOUT IT. HE SAID THEY WOULD CHECK IT OUT. AFTER DOING SO HE INFORMED ME THAT A PLASTIC COUPLER IN THE STEERING COLUMN WAS WORN AND WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE CAR ONLY HAD 40,000 MILES ON IT AT THAT POINT. I WAS SURPRISED THAT A CAR WITH THAT LOW MILEAGE WOULD NEED SUCH AN IMPORTANT PART THAT COULD PROVE TO CAUSE LOSS OF STEERING IF IT BROKE. THE SERVICE ADVISOR SAID THEY WERE "SEEING A LOT OF THESE COME IN FOR REPAIR AND WAS SURPRISED THEY HAVEN'T ISSUED A RECALL ON THEM". I AGREE. I BELIEVE A CAR WITH 40K MILES SHOULD NOT BE HAVING SUCH PROBLEMS, ESPECIALLY WITH SAFETY RELATED EQUIPMENT. MORE IMPORTANTLY, I AM FEARFUL FOR THE COUNTLESS FOLKS OUT THERE WHO MAY NOT BE AWARE THEY HAVE A POTENTIAL PROBLEM WITH THEIR STEERING, A PROBLEM THAT COULD CAUSE A FATAL CRASH. THIS PROBLEM NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED. THANK YOU.
AIR BAG LIGHT STAYED ON ON DASHBOARD AND DEALER SAID IT WAS A CLOCK SPRING BUT I HAVE NEVER HAD AN ISSUE WITH AN AIR BAG IN ANY CAR I HAVE EVER DRIVEN AND FEEL IT WAS DEFECTIVE
IT STARTED WHILE DRIVING IF YOU HIT A BUMP IN THE ROAD, GO OVER RAIL ROAD TRACKS, SPEED BUMPS ECT. IT WOULD MAKE A CLUNK SOUND. THEN IT GOT MORE FREQUENT. THEN IT STARTED TO MAKE THE CLUNK SOUND WHEN TURNING AND NOW IT MAKES THE SOUND WHILE DRIVING AND YOU TURN THE WHEEL OR SITTING STILL TURNING THE WHEEL. THE SOUND IS MADE WHEN YOU FIRST START TO TURN THE WHEEL MOVING OR STATIONARY. THE STEERING HAS A LOT OF PLAY AS IT HAS GOTTEN WORSE. I BELIEVE THIS WILL BECOME DANGEROUS AND LOSS OF CONTROL COULD BE POSSIBLE.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA. WHILE DRIVING AND ATTEMPTING TO MAKE A TURN, AN ABNORMAL CLICKING NOISE EMITTED FROM THE STEERING WHEEL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING; HOWEVER, DETAILS OF THE DIAGNOSIS COULD NOT BE PROVIDED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 16V190000 (STEERING). THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 75,000.
2011 HYUNDAI SONATA SE WITH SEVERE KNOCKING AND BANGING IN STEERING WHEEL AND COLUMN.MY DEALERSHIP DIAGNOSED THIS AS STEERING COUPLER FAILURE. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE DESPITE HYUNDAI AND IT'S DEALERS DENYING THIS FACT. STEERING IS NOTABLY HARDER WITH LOW SPEED DRIVING AND FEELS UNCOMFORTABLE AT HIGHER SPEEDS. MY SPOUSE IS AFRAID TO DRIVE THE CAR UNTIL THIS IS REPAIRED. THIS ISSUE IS COMMON ON THESE EARLY MODEL SONATAS AS WELL AS THE KIA OPTIMA. THE DEALERSHIPS AVOID THIS ISSUE UNTIL AFTER WARRANTY PERIOD IS OVER, THEN THEY TELL CUSTOMER THAT IT'S NOW THEIR RESPONSIBILITY TO REPAIR AT $400-600.00. THEY ARE EVEN TELLING CUSTOMERS THAT THERE IS STEERING COLUMN FAILURE AND CHARGING THEM THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS IN REPLACEMENT. I CANNOT UNDERSTAND HOW THIS IS NOT CONSIDERED A SAFETY ISSUE DUE TO IT BEING STEERING RELATED.
OWNED CAR FOR A YEAR NOW AND ON HE 25TH OF AUGUST I RETURNED TO MY VEHICLE AND STARTED IT UP STILL IN PARK POSITION ALL LIGHTS ILLUMINATED AND ALL EXCEPT THE AIRBAG LIGHT ON THE DASH WENT OFF. I TURNED THE CAR OFF WAITED A MINUTE AND TRIED TO TURN IT ON AGAIN AND THE LIGHT STILL STAYED ON IT HAS BEEN ON EVER SINCE.THE NEXT MORNING I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND MY MAIN CONCERN WAS THAT THE AIRBAGS WERE STILL WORKING BUT THE PERSON WORKING TOLD ME THE AIRBAGS WOULD NOT DEPLOY IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT . I AM VERY WORRIED THIS IS NOT THE ONLY ISSUE I HAVE WITH THIS VEHICLE AND I AM A SINGLE MOTHER WITH 2 YOUNG CHILDREN ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN I DO NOT FEEL SAFE IN THIS VEHICLE.

THE DASH BOARD LIGHT TURNED ON FEW MONTHS AGO AFTER 5 1/2 YEARS OF OWNING THE CAR. I TOOK TO THE DEALER AND THEY ASK FOR $160 FOR DIAGNOSTIC AND THAT AMOUNT WILL APPLY TO THE COST OF FIXING THE PROBLEM IF I DECIDES TO GO AHEAD OF FIXING THE AIRBAG LIGHTING PROBLEM, THE DEALER GAVE A ROUGH ESTIMATE BETWEEN $900 TO $1200 TO FIX THIS AIRBAG ISSUES. THEY ALSO SAID THE THE AIRBAG ONLY WARRANTY FOR 6 YEARS OR 60,000 MILES. I THOUGH THE AIRBAG SHOULD BE 10 YEARS AND 100,000 MILES AS HYUNDAI ALWAYS ADVERTISED THAT. I SEARCHED ON THE WEB AND THERE ARE A RECALL ON AIRBAG FOR ELANTRA BUT NOT SONATA. IT IS DEFINITELY A MANUFACTURE DEFECTED BECAUSE THIS IS THE ORIGINAL AIRBAG AND THE CAR HAS NEVER BEEN IN ANY KIND OF ACCIDENT AS I MENTIONED ABOVE. I SEEMED LIKE THE 10/100,000 WARRANTY IS JUST FOR ADVERTISEMENT PURPOSE AND THEY ARE NOT REALLY STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT OR QUALITY. BTW - I EXCHANGED SOME EMAIL WITH HYUNDAI CORPORATION BUT IT DID NOT GO ANYWHERE.

WHEN STARTING AND MOVING INTO A DRIVE GEAR FROM PARK, OR WHILE AT A STOP IN DRIVE, THE VEHICLE WILL SUDDENLY LOSE ITS DRIVE LETTER DISPLAY AND WILL FEEL LIKE THE TRANSMISSION IS NOT ENGAGED. THIS IS STILL OCCURRING AFTER THE DEALERSHIP INSPECTED THE VEHICLE FOR THIS ISSUE. THIS ISSUE HAS OCCURRED REPEATEDLY. AFTER THE VEHICLE IS TURNED OFF THEN ON, THE DRIVE LETTER DISPLAY REAPPEARS WITH THE DRIVE LETTER THAT I MOVED THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTER TO. WHEN THE TRANSMISSION IS MOVED TO REVERSE, THE DRIVE LETTER DISAPPEARS AGAIN. SOMETIMES THIS HAPPENS 3 OR 4 TIMES IMMEDIATELY IN A ROW. IT HAS ALSO HAPPENED WHILE IN DRIVE AT A STOP AND HAS REQUIRED THAT I TURN OFF THE ENGINE THEN TURN IT ON AGAIN TO SEE THE DRIVE LETTERS.
