I WAS DRIVING DOWN A HIGHWAY WHEN I NOTICED MY STEERING WHEEL STARTED TO FEEL VERY LOOSE AND MAKE A CLUNKING NOISE. I CONTACTED MY LOCAL HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP AND WAS ADVISED THE IT IS A KNOWN ISSUE AND WITHOUT EVEN LOOKING AT THE VEHICLE KNEW THAT IT WAS THE COUPLING. ALTHOUGH MY CAR IS ON THE LIST FOR THE STEERING RECALL, THEY COUPLING ISN'T A PART OF THE RECALL AND THEY WILL ONLY FIX IT FOR ALMOST $500.00.
AFTER RECALL REPAIR ON STEERING THE STEERING STARTED A HARSH BUMPING WHEN TURNING STEERING WHEEL LEFT OR RIGHT WHILE IN MOTION ON HIGHWAY OR STOPPED . THE STEERING WENT FROM NO PROBLEM TO A SEVERE PROBLEM SHORTLY AFTER THE RECALL. HYUNDAI SERVICE SAID THE RELATIONSHIP TO THE RECALL WAS PUIRELY COINCIDENTAL. PROBLEMS LIKE THIS USUALLY OCCUR GRADUALLY. THE SERVICE AGENT STATED THAT HE HAD SEEN HUNDREDS OF HYUNDAIS WITH THIS PROBLEM. PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS AS A POSSIBLE RECALL.
AIRBAG LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND STAY ON, TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER AND I WAS TO IT NEEDS NEW AIRBAGS . CAR IS NEVER BEING INTO ACCIDENT, AND IT NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS RELATED TO AIRBAG BEFOR. THIS CAR IS NOT SAFE AS AIRBAGS CAN JUST GO OFF WITH OUT ANY APARENT REASON. ,MY OTHER PROBLEM OF THIS CAR IS, WHEN I ACCELERATE THERE'S PIGGING NOISE AND CAR ALMOST LOSSES POWER THIS HAPPEN IN MIDDLE OF HIWAY ONCE AND LOST POWER OTHER TIMES ON STREET. TOOK IT TO THE DEALER WAS NOT GIVEN CLEAR ANSWER TO WHY THE CAR DOES THIS.
WHILE I WAS DRIVING, SO THE CAR WAS IN MOTION, MY SPEED LIMIT WAS AROUND 35 MPH ON A CITY STREET, THE CAR MADE A NOISE THEN COMPLETELY STOPPED WITHOUT WARNING ALMOST CAUSING THE VEHICLE BEHIND ME TO CRASH INTO MY REAR END. I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD, I PANICKED TURNED THE IGNITION OFF AND RESTARTED THE CAR TO ATTEMPT TO PULL OFF THE ROAD TO SAFETY. THE VEHICLE STARTED UP AND I PULLED BACK ONTO THE ROAD TO MAKE A RIGHT TURN TOWARDS THE HIGHWAY, AS I WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE STOPPED AGAIN WITHOUT WARNING. THE PEOPLE IN THE CAR BEHIND ME GOT OUT OF THEIR VEHICLE TO CHECK ON ME. THE MAN STATED, "I CAN PUSH YOU OFF THE ROAD, BUT THERE IS SOMETHING GOING ON WITH YOUR ENGINE OR PERHAPS SPARK PLUGS OR WIRES AND IT'S NOT STAYING CONNECTED OR FIRING OFF A CHARGE, I'M NOT SURE." I THANKED THE KIND STRANGER AND IMMEDIATELY CALLED HYNDAI CUSTOMER SERVICE. THE HYUNDAI CUSTOMER SERVICE REP INFORMED ME ABOUT THE ENGINE RECALL NOTICE AND CONTACTED THE TOWING COMPANY TO LOCATE AND TOW MY VEHICLE TO THE NEAREST HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP. HOWEVER, AFTER WAITING 1 HOUR AND A HALF, I CALLED THE 800 NUMBER THAT WAS GIVEN TO ME TO REFERENCE AND THEY DID NOT HAVE ANY INFORMATION ON HAVING ME TOWED "FREE OF CHARGE." THE HYUNDAI ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE REP DID NOT HAVE A RECORD THAT HYNDAI CUSTOMER SERVICE PLACED A CALL TO THEM AT ALL AND FURTHER MORE THE HYUNDAI CUSTOMER SERVICE CENTER WAS NOW CLOSED. APPARENTLY, ON SUNDAY THEY CLOSE AT 3PM. MY CAR IS STILL SITTING WHERE IT STOPPED BECAUSE THE HYUNDAI ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE NEEDS THE "APPROVAL" AND REFERENCE NUMBER TO TOW THE CAR ON HYUNDAI FOR FREE. HYUNDAI HAS BASICALLY PRODUCED A "LEMON" DUE TO THE FACT THAT THIS PARTICULAR MAKE AND MODEL HAS HAD "SEVERAL" DANGEROUS RECALLS SINCE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE IN MARCH OF 2011. THEY SHOULD BE DEEMED UNSAFE AND TAKEN OFF THE ROADS COMPLETELY AND CUSTOMERS SHOULD BE GIVEN THEIR MONEY BACK.
I HAVE HAD THIS 2011 SONATA FOR JUST 4 MONTH IT HAS 77.000 MILES AND SINCE I BOUGHT IT I HAVE CALLED THE DEALER SEVERAL TIMES BECAUSE THE CAR HAS A KNOCKING SOUND COMING FROM WHAT I THINK IS THE ENGINE SPECIALLY AT LOW SPEED THE SOUND BECOMES LOUDER AND AT TIMES THE OIL PRESSURE LIGHT WILL FLASH ON AND OFF. DEALER SAID THEY INSPECTED AND CAN'T FIND ANYTHING I AM VERY SCARED THAT THIS IS A MAYOR ISSUE AND WAS ALSO TOLD BY THE DEALER THAT THERE ARE NO RECALLS FOR THAT YEAR BUT IT JUST DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE THAT A CAR WILL DO THAT FOR NO REASON. I DON'T KNOW WHO ELSE TO CONTACT, I DID BUY AND EXTENDED WARRANTY WHEN I PURCHASED THE CAR. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP.

WHILE DRIVING MY WIFE'S SONATA, I FELT A DISTINCT "CLUNK" IN THE STEERING COLUMN WHILE MOVING THE STEERING WHEEL LEFT AND RIGHT. THIS OCCURS WHEN STOPPED AS WELL AS WHEN THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION. I AM CONFIDENT THAT THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE THAT DESERVES AN IMMEDIATE SAFETY RECALL RESPONSE. IT IS ALSO MY UNDERSTANDING THAT THIS SPECIFIC STEERING COMPLAINT (COUPLER FAILURE) HAS BEEN REPORTED BY NUMEROUS SONATA OWNERS WITH NO REMEDY ISSUED BY NHTSA. WHY IS THAT? DOES SOMEONE HAVE TO LOSE CONTROL OF THEIR VEHICLE AND PARISH, BEFORE ACTION IS TAKEN? PLEASE HELP...TOMBSTONE JUSTICE IS NOT THE ANSWER!!!

HOW MANY MORE COMPLAINTS WILL IT TAKE FOR HYUNDAI TO RECALL THE STEERING COUPLER ISSUE. THE STEERING IS VERY LOOSE AND MAKES A CLUNKING SOUND WITH EXCESSIVE VIBRATION AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS TO THE POINT THAT I FEEL THIS VEHICLE IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. THE ISSUE STARTED AT ABOUT 60, 000 MILES, OUT OF WARRANTY OF COURSE. I AM TOLD BY THE DEALER THAT THE CULPRIT IS A 4 DOLLAR RUBBER PART, SEE ATTACHED PIC, THAT WILL COST HUNDREDS TO REPAIR. ALONG WITH THE OTHER RECALLS RELATED TO STEERING, I'M HOPING NO ONE GETS KILLED BEFORE THIS GETS RECALLED.

STEERING COUPLING ON THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING DETERIORATED REQUIRING REPLACEMENT DUE TO THIS BEING A SAFETY ISSUE FAILURE WOULD RESULT IN LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL. THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH THESE VEHICLES CREATING A UNSAFE CONDITION.

THE STARTER MOTOR CONTAINS A PLASTIC LEVER THAT ENGAGES THE STARTER MOTOR WITH THE ENGINE. THIS PLASTIC PART FAILED AT 53,429 MILES. THE DEALERSHIP NEW IMMEDIATELY WHAT PART HAD FAILED BASED UPON MY DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM (CAN HEAR STARTER MOTOR RUNNING BUT IT WAS NOT ENGAGING WITH THE ENGINE). THEY KNEW THE COST OF THE REPAIR OFF THE TOP OF THEIR HEADS AND THE PARTS DEPARTMENT HAD A SUPPLY OF THE PART IN A DRAWER AT THE REGISTER. NOT SURE HOW OFTEN THIS OCCURS BUT IT MUST BE QUITE FREQUENT BASED UPON THE DEALERS FAMILAIRITY WITH THE PROBLEM
WHEN TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL 5 PERCENT IN EITHER DIRECTION L OR R, THERE IS A CLUNKING SOUND. THE BEARING AT THE BOTTOM OF THE STEERING COLUMN NEEDS TO BE REPLACED THE CAR IN QUESTION ONLY HAS 43,000 MILES AND IS 4 MONTHS PAST ITS WARRANTY, COST ID $350.00
TAKATA RECALL - I PURCHASED A HYUNDAI SONTATA IN AUG OF 2015 AND I HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT TROUBLE EVER SINCE I PURCHASED THE CAR. I HAD TO HAVE THE ENGINE REPLACED IN JAN OF 2016 AND AFTER I HAD THE ENGINE REPLACED I NOTICED THAT THE STEERING WHEEL STARTED CLICKING. THE STEERING CLICKING IS AT ITS WORST WHEN THE CAR IS DRIVING OVER 60MPH. THE STEERING COUPLER IS DAMAGED AND THE DEALERSHIP IS STATING THAT THE CAR IS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY AND THEY CAN DO THE REPAIR AT A COST TO ME. THE ISSUE AT HAND IS THAT IT IS A COMMON ISSUE AMONGST HYUNDAI SONATAS AND THEREFORE I FEEL THAT THEY SHOULD COVER THE REPAIR. THIS WILL BE THE LAST HYUNDAI THAT I PURCHASE. THE MECHANIC EVEN TOLD ME WELL IF YOU DON'T HAVE IT REPAIRED YOUR STEERING WHEEL COULD POTENTIAL COME OFF WHILE DRIVING.
MY SRS AIRBAG NOTIFICATION CAME ON OUT OF THE BLUE. IT HAS NOT GONE OFF AS OF YET.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE STEERING COUPLING CAUSED THE FAILURE AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 96,000.
HAD NO IDEA THERE WAS THIS MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE STEERING I AS WELL HAD A RATTLE IN THE STEERING WHEN I WENT OVER A BUMP OR TURNED MY WHEELS IT WOULD MAKE A LOUD NOISE, WAS TOLD BY SOMEONE IN MY HOMETOWN THEY HAD AN ELANTRA THAT SOMETHING IN STEERING BROKE AND CAUSED THEM TO BRAKE SO I WAS REALLY PARANOID THEN. I CALLED THE DEALER TOLD ME EXACTLY WHAT IT WAS AS SOON AS I TOLD HIM HOW IT WAS DOING AND THAT'S A $200 FIX I SAID THIS MUST HAPPEN A LOT REPLY WAS YES IN SONATAS AND ELANTRAS WHY ISN'T THERE A RECALL MY CAR DOESN'T EVEN HAVE 58,000 MILES ON IT AND HAVE NEVER HAD ANYTHING LIKE THIS HAPPEN IN ANY OTHER VEHICLE I HAVE OWNED. ONCE DROVE ONE FOR 15 YEARS NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM!!
THE STEERING ON MY 2011 SONATA MAKES A POPPING NOISE WHEN I TURN THE STEERING WHEEL RIGHT OR LEFT WHEN THE CAR IS STATIONARY. WHEN DRIVING IT SOUNDS LIKE THE STEERING WHEEL IS GOING TO SEPARATE FROM THE REST OF THE CAR WHEN I DRIVE OVER ANY POTHOLES, BUMPS, OR SEAMS IN THE THE ROAD. I AM FEARFUL THE STEERING WHEEL WILL SEPARATE FROM THE CAR AT SPEED. THIS OCCURS CONSISTENTLY WHEN I DRIVE THE CAR.

ALSO, THE BRAKE LIGHT BEGAN STAY ON WHICH CAUSED PROBLEM DURING HIGHWAY DRIVING.
STEERING HAS BECOME "LOOSE". IT STARTED OUT A MONTH AGO WITH JUST SLIGHT VIBRATION WHEN DRIVING, NOW WHEN TURNING STEERING WHEEL IN EITHER DIRECTION, WHEEL CLICKS AND SHIFTS FROM SIDE TO SIDE. ALSO, WHEN GOING OVER BUMPS, THE STEERING WHEEL MAKES CLANGING NOISE.

THERE'S A CLICKING SOUND IN THE STEERING COLUMN. THIS HAPPENS WHENEVER THE STEERING WHEEL IS TURNED. THE CLICKING OCCURS ALSO WHEN THE CAR IS STATIONERY.

RECENTLY I HAVE HEARD A KNOCKING NOISE IN THE STEERING WHEEL AND CAN FEEL THIS KNOCKING AS WELL. I HAVE TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO THE CLOSET HYUNDAI DEALER FOR LOOKING AT AND REPAIR, THEY DESCRIBE IT AS THE STEERING COUPLER THAT NEEDED TO BE REPLACE AND WAS VERY COSTLY FOR REPAIR. THIS NOISE AND FEELING APPEARS BELOW 5 MPH AND WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL IS BEING TURNED LEFT OR RIGHT.

IMMEDIATELY AFTER STARTING THE CAR THE TRANSMISSION GEAR INDICATOR LETTERS IN THE DASHBOARD WERE BLANK AND THE SHIFTER GEARS LETTERS WERE NOT ILLUMINATED. A TEMPORARY REMEDY WAS TO SHUT OFF THE ENGINE AND RESTART THE CAR. THIS PROBLEM IS ERRATIC AND CANNOT BE REPRODUCED AT WILL.

THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE ALTERNATOR AND STARTER FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED; HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE FAILED TO START. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO ANOTHER DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE ENGINE FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 45,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
TAKATA RECALL AIR BAG LIGHT STAYS ON. DEALER SAYS IT'S A FAULTY CLOCK SPRING AND WILL COST $340 FOR PARTS AND LABOR. THIS CAN BE DEADLY IF IN A CRASH AND AIR BAGS DON'T DEPLOY!
RECALL 15-01-048 , RECALL CAMPAIGN 132, STATES ON PAGE ONE 'DEALERS MUST PERFORM THIS RECALL CAMPAIGN WHENEVER AN AFFECTED VEHICLE IS IN THE SHOP FOR ANY MAINTENANCE OR REPAIR. ' THEY KEY WORD IS 'WHENEVER'. THE DEALER DID THE CHECK ONCE ONLY. WHENEVER MEANS EVERY TIME THAT THE CAR IS BEING SERVICED. AND THE CAR HAS BEEN TO THE SAME DEALER THAT I BOUGHT THE CAR FROM SEVERAL TIMES WITH NO ADDITIONAL CHECKS FOR THE RECALL. NOVCHECKSVMEAN THAT THERE IS NOT THE SLIGHTEST OF PREEMPTIVE ACTIONS THAT COULD PROTECT ME FROM SERIOUS INJURY. MY CAR IS 6 YEARS OLD. TO BE EFFECTIVE 'WHENEVER' MUST BE IMPLEMENTED.
CLICKING NOISE COMING FROM THE STEERING WHEEL WHEN TURNED RIGHT OR LEFT. THE NOISE ALSO HAPPENS WHEN HITTING A ROUGH SPOT OR BUMP. I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS PROBLEM AND FOUND THAT THIS PROBLEM IS AFFECTING A LARGE NUMBER OF OWNERS. HYUNDAI HAS FAILED TO ISSUE ANY REMEDY FOR THE COMPLAINTS.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE ISSUE. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE.
AFTER STARTING THE CAR - WITHOUT MOVING THE THE VEHICLE, WHEN MOVING THE WHEEL BACK AND FORTH, IT MAKES A CLUNKING NOISE LIKE SOMETHING IS LOOSE.
DRIVING ON INTERSTATE STEERING BEGAN GETTING LOOSE, FREQUENT SHIMMY. WHEN BACKING UP AT A GAS STATION THE STEERING WAS MAKING CLUNKING SOUNDS AND HAD MORE PLAY IN THE STEERING WHEEL. WENT TO A DEALERSHIP NEXT MORNING, THE POWER STEERING COUPLER WAS REPLACED.
MY AIR BAG LIGHT ILLUMINATES EVERY TIME I TURN MY CAR ON AND WILL NOT GO OFF! THIS HAPPENED RIGHT AFTER IT HAD REPAIRS ON ALL THE OTHER RECALLS ON THIS VEHICLE INCLUDING HAVING MY ENGINE TOTALLY REPLACED. SAW SOME FORUMS WHERE IS COMMON PLACE. PART COST - $17.00 LABOR - $372.22! PLAZA AUTO MALL INVOICE # [XXX] FROM 7/26/16 I'M NOT AN ENGINEER BUT IN MY OPINION A PART THIS CRITICAL WHICH IS MADE OF RUBBER FAILED IN A VEHICLE ONLY 5 YEARS OLD WITH 80,000 MILES WHICH WAS MOSTLY HIGHWAY DURING THE FIRST 4 YEARS OF OWNERSHIP I'VE ATTACHED PHOTOS OF THE PART WHICH WAS GIVEN BACK TO ME BY THE DEALER WHO ALSO CONCURRED THAT IT WAS POORLY MADE BUT THERE IS NO RECALL AT THIS TIME. WHEN I TURN THE STEERING WHEEL WHILE PARKING OR DRIVING, THERE IS A CLUNKY FEELING AND NOISE. I HAD TO TAKE THE VEHICLE IN FOR A SHIFT GEAR RECALL, AND WHEN THE SERVICE TECH PULLED THE VEHICLE INTO THE SERVICE AREA, HE GOT OUT AND (WITHOUT ME MENTIONING THE ISSUE) SAID, THAT CLUNKING IS YOUR "COUPLER", BUT IT'S NOT INCLUDED IN THIS RECALL, THE COST TO FIX THAT IS $350. BECAUSE HE KNEW OFF-HAND WHAT IT WAS, THAT LED ME TO BELIEVE THAT THERE WERE OTHERS THAT HAVE HAD THE SAME ISSUE. I WANTED TO DO SOME RESEARCH SINCE I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT A COUPLER WAS, AND IT TURNS OUT THERE ARE A FEW FORUMS WITH HYUNDAI OWNERS COMPLAINING OF THIS ISSUE. IT SEEMS TO ME IF THIS COULD CAUSE THE STEERING TO DISASSEMBLE, THAT IT SHOULD BE A RECALL. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 43,000.
SEEMINGLY OUT OF THE BLUE, THE STEERING WHEEL BEGAN TO HAVE EXTRA GIVE WHEN TURNED EVEN SLIGHTLY. DAYS LATER, A RATTLING SOUND IN THE COLUMN STARTED, ESPECIALLY WHENEVER I HIT A BUMP IN THE ROAD OR TURNED CORNERS. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD IT WAS A BROKEN COLUMN COUPLER.
EVEN I HAD THE PROBLEM WITH MY 2011 SONATA TURBO 2.0. STEERING WHEEL BECAME VERY STIFF AND THERE WAS A LOUD CLUNKING NOISE WHEN DRIVING ON UNEVEN ROADS, BUMPS AND HIGH SPEED. THE GARAGE I WENT TO CHARGED ME $300 FOR ELECTRONIC STEERING COUPLER KIT AND REBUILD AND $450 FOR THE LABOR. LOOKS LIKE THERE ARE QUITE A FEW COMPLAINTS WITH THIS PROBLEM IN 2011 SONATA. THIS WASN'T PART OF THE EPS CONTROL MODULE RECALL. HYUNDAI SHOULD MAKE A NOTE OF IT AND HAVE THIS FIXED AS PART OF RECALL ASAP.
CAR WON'T START WITH PUSH BUTTON. I TOOK IT TO DEALER WHO REPLACED SHIFTER CABLE, BRAKE SWITCH AND SOME OTHER RECALLS THAT WAS PART OF THE PORBLEM AND SUPPOSEDLY IT WAS FIXED. NEXT DAY I WENT TO GAS STATION WITH MY 4 YEARS OLD DAUGHTER AND WIFE AND GOT STUCK. FIRST IT WON'T START, THEN IT STARTED BUT GEAR DISPLAY WON'T READY. I SHIFTED TO DRIVE TO LEAVE BUT CAR STARTED MOVING IN REVERSE DIRECTION. I ALMOST HIT THE CAR AND PERSON BEHIND ME GETTING GAS FOR HIS CAR. CAR TRANSMISSION WAS NOT READING WHAT MODE DRIVE, REVERSE, NEUTRAL IT WAS IN AND WITH GUESSING I LEFT THE AREA. I TOOK IT TO THE HYUNDA DEALER WHO TESTED AND REPLACED INHIBITOR SWITCH AND SAID IT'S FIXED BUT CHARGED ME #311.25. I BELIEVE ALL OF THESE ISSUES WITH SHIFTER CABLE, BRAK SWTICH AND INHIBITOR SWITCH ARE INTER RELATED AND SHOULD BE FURTHER LOOKED INTO TO AVOID ACCIDENTS AND HYUNDAI SHOULD EXPAND THE RECALL TO REPLACE THE SWTICH. I HAVE SPOKEND WITH HYUNDAI CUSTOMER SERVICE BUT THEY REFUSED TO FURTHER LOOK I NTO THIS ISSUE AND COVER THE COST OF REPLACING INHIBITOR SWTICH.
