TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V568000 (ENGINE); HOWEVER, THE PARTS TO DO THE REPAIR WERE UNAVAILABLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER (SOUTHERN STATES HYUNDAI OF RALEIGH, 2511 WAKE FOREST RD, RALEIGH, NC 27609) AND WAS INFORMED THAT HE WOULD HAVE TO PAY TO HAVE THE VEHICLE INSPECTED FOR THE NOISE COMING FROM THE LEFT SIDE OF THE MOTOR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AT 800-633-5151 AND STATED THAT THE VIN WAS INCLUDED IN THE RECALL AND WAS NOT SURE WHY THE DEALER WAS NOT REPAIRING THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER ALSO STATED THAT THEY WOULD CONTACT THE DEALER, BUT HAD NOT AT THE TIME OF THE COMPLAINT. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE. PARTS DISTRIBUTION DISCONNECT.
MY WIFE AND I BOUGHT A 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA ON AUGUST 28TH, 2015 FROM A DEALERSHIP, BUT AFTER DRIVING THE VEHICLE FOR A PERIOD OF 10 DAYS, THE ENGINE KEEPS RUNNING WITH KNOCKING NOISE; A NOISE WHICH MY WIFE AND I WERE NOT SURE AS TO WHICH PART OF THE ENGINE IT WAS EMANATING FROM. WE THOUGH MAYBE IT WAS JUST A ROCK AND WOULD SUBSIDE AFTER FEW DRIVES, BUT IT DIDN'T. ON SEPTEMBER 25TH, 2015, WHILE MY WIFE WAS DRIVING TO THE STORE, THE VEHICLE STALLED AT A STOP SIGN, BUT AFTER REMOVING THE KEYS OFF THE IGNITION AND RE-CRANKING THE ENGINE, IT STARTED RUNNING AND THE KNOCKING NOISE WENT OFF, BUT THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AFTERWARD. MY WIFE TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP WE BOUGHT IT FROM FOR A CHECK UP AND REPAIR, BUT THE DEALERSHIP'S MAINTENANCE SHOP WAS UNABLE TO FIX THE VEHICLE FOR THE REASON THAT IT HAD NOT REACHED 30 DAYS SINCE WE BOUGHT THE VEHICLE FOR THE WARRANT THAT WE BOUGHT TO KICK IN. THIS WAS VERY FRUSTRATING AND PUZZLING FOR THE DEALERSHIP TO ACT THIS WAY TO A CUSTOMER WHO JUST BOUGHT A VEHICLE.
STEERING BECAME LOOSE, CAR MAKING SQUEAKY NOISE WHEN IN MOTION. THIS SOUND WAS EXTREMELY EVIDENT WHEN TURNING. THIS OCCURRED PRIMARILY ON CITY STREETS.

AS I WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE , I WAS EXPERIENCING LOSS OF POWER AND EVEN ENGINE FAILURE. RE-STARTED AND CONTINUED TO PROCEED. TRAVELING APPROXIMATELY 25 MILES PER HOUR DOWN HILL COASTING, ENGINE DIED FOR THE THIRD TIME IN LESS THAN 4 BLOCKS. PULLED OVER ATTEMPTED TO RE-START AGAIN AND HEARD A LOUD BANG UNDER THE HOOD. PULL OFF TO SIDE OF ROAD , TO VIEW LOSE OF OIL AND STEAM FROM ENGINE. OPEN HOOD VIEW SMOKE AND PLENTY OF OIL SPRAYED OUT BACK OF ENGINE. NO POWER OR ABILITY TO MOVE VEHICLE. CALLED TOW TRUCK AND ONCE RECEIVED INFORMATION FROM MECHANIC THAT ROD WENT THROUGH ENGINE BLOCK. I REPAIRED THE VEHICLE WITH $4800.00 COST AND A USED 2013 ENGINE. COME TO FIND OUT, SEVERAL HUNDRED 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA ENGINE ARE HAVE SAME ISSUE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA. WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN IN FOR INSPECTION, THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE STEERING FLEXIBLE COUPLING NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER:10V426000 (STEERING). THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 78,119.
LOSS OF ENGINE POWER DUE TO TURBO WASTE GATE CONTROL ROD OUT OF SPECS WHICH HAPPENS EVERY TIME THERE IS A CHANGE IN WEATHER EVERY TIME WEATHER COOLS DOWN OR HEATS UP CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON AND CODE GIVE IS TURBO WASTE GATE ACTUATOR MALFUNCTION AND ENGINE LOSSES ALMOST ALL OF ITS POWER MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO MOVE OUT THE WAY AT HIGHWAY SPEED AND ITS IS A SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER IT HAPPENED LAST YEAR WHEN WINTER ROLLED AROUND THEN IT HAPPENED AGAIN THIS YEAR WHEN SUMMER ROLLED AROUND AND NOW FALL IS HERE AND THE PROBLEM IS BACK AND HYUNDAI WANTS TO CHARGE NOT ONLY THE ADJUSTMENT FEE BUT THE DIAGNOSTIC CHARGES AS WELL THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPEN MY CAR HAD ABOUT 30000 MILES SECOND TIME IT HAS 54000 AND NOW THE CAR HAS ABOUT 84000 MILES ON IT.

ON SEPT. 3, 2015 WHILE DRIVING ON THE EXPRESSWAY I EXPERIENCED THE ENGINE LOCKED UP AND IMMEDIATELY PULLED ONTO SHOULDER. I TRIED TO RESTART THE ENGINE AND THE CAR BEGAN TO SMOKE. HAD IT TOWED TO DARCY HYUNDAI IN JOLIET. HYUNDAI INFORMED ME THAT THE ENGINE SEIZED UP AND THE STARTER WAS BURNED OUT AND IT WAS OUT OF WARRANTY AND SAID TO REPAIR IT WITH A REPLACEMENT ENGINE WOULD BE 5800 DOLLARS AND AT THAT POINT I DID NOT HAVE THE MONEY AND MY CREDIT CARDS WERE MAXED OUT. AND THEN I HAD TO ASKED MY FATHER FOR ADVICE EITHER TO REPAIR OR REPLACE THE VEHICLE. WE DECIDED IT WOULD BE MORE PRACTICAL TO PURCHASE A USED CAR FROM CAR-MAX AND BECAUSE OF MY FINANCIAL POSITION MY FATHER HAD TO EXTEND HIMSELF AND SIGN FOR THE CAR. THIS 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA WAS ALSO IN MY FATHERS NAME DUE TO A BANKRUPTCY.
OVER A 2 DAY PERIOD, I NOTICED A GRADUALLY WORSENING CLICKING NOISE COMING FROM THE STEERING COLUMN WHILE DRIVING...WHEN TURNING TO THE LEFT AND RIGHT. IT HAPPENED AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND NEIGHBORHOOD SPEEDS....ANYTIME THE STEERING COLUMN WAS IN MOTION. THE CLICKING NOISE ALSO HAPPENED WHEN THE CAR WAS IN IDLE AND THE STEERING WHEEL WAS MOVED IN EITHER DIRECTION. THE STEERING WHEEL ACTED AS IF IT WAS CATCHING ON SOMETHING. ADDITIONALLY, AFTER DRIVING OVER A BUMP IN THE ROAD, THE STEERING COLUMN WOULD MAKE A LOUD BANGING NOISE...AS IF THE STEERING COLUMN WAS SHAKING INTERNALLY. THE STEERING FELT LOOSE. THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED A $1.99 FLEXIBLE STEERING COUPLER + $223.89 LABOR. (NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY). THEY TOLD ME IT WAS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM, POSSIBLY CAUSED BY THE HIGH HEAT IN TEXAS...AND THE REPLACEMENT PART IS MANUFACTURED WITH IMPROVED MATERIAL. I HAVE RETAINED THE OLD COUPLER AS EVIDENCE...IT APPEARS TO BE A COG SHAPED (PLASIC?) WHEEL WITH THE COGS PARTIALLY MELTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 19,842.
I WAS TRAVELING IN PA. ON ROUTE 879 AND 153, AT A RATE OF ABOUT 60 MPH MERGING INTO TRAFFIC, THE ENGINE JUST STOPPED WORKING, I ALMOST CAUSED AN ACCIDENT TRYING TO GET OFF THE ROAD WHILE THE MERGE LANE WAS ENDING. THIS VEHICLE HAS BEEN REGULARLY MAINTAINED. I AM BEING TOLD BY THE MECHANICS THAT I NEED A WHOLE NEW ENGINE. THE MECHANIC DOESN'T SEE WHY THIS SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED. I UNDERSTAND THAT OTHER PEOPLE HAVE HAD SIMILAR EXPERIENCES, THANKFUL NO ONE WAS HURT. OPENED A CASE WITH HYUNDAI (C8187494). THE OPERATOR AT HYUNDAI THAT TOOK MY INFORMATION STATED THAT SHE NEW OF THE LAWSUIT AND THAT HYUNDAI WAS NOT DOING ANYTHING. SOMEONE COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED ANY ASSISTANCE YOU CAN GIVE WOULD BE APPRECIATED.
AFTER DRIVING OVER A BUMP IN THE ROAD WOULD THE STEERING COLUMUN WOULD MAKE A BANGING NOISE. THE STEERING FELT LOOSE AND WOULD MAKE A CLICKING NOISE WHEN TURNING TO THE LEFT AND RIGHT. I TOOK IT INTO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY TOLD ME IT WAS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH THAT MODEL AND SHOULD BE RECALLED. IT WAS A 4 DOLLAR PART TO FIX THE PROBLEM AND 278 DOLLARS IN LABOR. THE PART THAT FAILED WAS PART OF THE MOTOR DRIVEN POWER STEERING.
AT APPROXIMATELY 112000 MILES THE AIR BAG SENSOR LIGHT CAME ON AND HAS REMAINED ON.
GAS GUAGE NOT REGISTERING CORRECTLY WAS TOLD BY DEALER IT IS A SENSOR, BUT THEN FAILED AFTER TESTING. MECHANIC RETESTING, SAYS FUEL UNIT NOT REGISTERING ON CLUSTER. FAULT IN "CLUSTER" SO GAS GUAGE IS NOT WORKING. WANTS TO CHARGE $1482 TO REPLACE, SAYS NOT WARRANTIED
THE ENGINE ON MY CAR SEIZED AND WAS TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. WHILE BEING REPAIRED, THE DEALERSHIP FOUND THAT MY TAIL LIGHT ASSEMBLIES HAD MELTED INCLUDING THE WIRES AND I HAD NO BRAKE LIGHTS. I BELIEVE THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE. MY WARRANTY WILL NOT COVER IT AND IS SAYING IT'S A COSMETIC ISSUE, NOT SAFETY.

THE VEHICLE DEVELOPED A CLICKING NOISE AROUND 53KMIILES UNDER THE DASH WHEN TURNING THE WHEEL. IT BECAME A LARGER PROBLEM ONE DAY ON THE HIGHWAY AT 65 MPH THE WHEEL STARTED SHAKING AS IF THE WHEELS WERE ABOUT TO FALL OFF. THE DEALER FOUND THE RUBBER GASKET THAT HOLDS THE STEERING COLUMN IN PLACE HAD DISINTEGRATED, THEY REPLACED THE PART AND THE ISSUE WAS RESOLVED. I FEEL THIS WAS A VERY DANGEROUS SAFETY ISSUE AND SINCE I HAVE FOUND SO MANY OTHERS ONLINE POSTINGS OF THE SAME ISSUE THAT I AM CONVINCED THAT THIS SHOULD BE A SAFETY RECALL. THIS MODEL HAS A MUCH HIGHER THAN AVERAGE AMOUNT OF RECALLS. THIS HOWEVER WAS THE MOST DANGEROUS ISSUE I HAVE HAD WITH THE SONARA AND I WAS VERY AFRAID WHEN I HAD A HARD TIME TO SUDDENLY NOT BE ABLE TO EASILY CONTROL THE STEERING.
REAR BREAK LIGHT WAS WAS FLASHING, CAR ACTED LIKE IT DID NOT WANT TO GO UNTIL IT WAS WARMED UP. JUST HAD IT INSPECTED AND AGAIN IT NEEDED ANOTHER BULB IN BREAK LIGHT. GARAGE THIS TIME REPLACED ANOTHER BULB AND REAR O2 SENSOR, STEERING ANGLE SENSOR. NOW TODAY THERE IS A RECALL WITH THE MOTOR. IS THIS CAR SAFE FOR OUR SON TO BE DRIVING BACK AND FORTH TO COLLEGE?
THE ENGINE IS MAKING A METALLIC KNOCKING NOISE. TOOK IT TO HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP FOR OIL CHANGE ON 10/11. THEY NOTED THE ISSUE WAS TAKEN CARE OF WITH THE OIL CHANGE WHICH IT WAS NOT. THERE IS AN INTERIM NOTICE RECALL ON THE VEHICLE AND MY CAR IS AFFECTED. IT STATES IF YOU CONTINUE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE WITH THE WORN CONNECTING ROD BEARING THE BEARING COULD FAIL AND THE ENGINE COULD STALL. WHEN I CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP THEY STATED IT HAD BEEN NOTED IN MY FILE, THAT THERE WAS NO REMEDY AT THIS TIME BUT TO CONTACT THEM ONCE THE REMEDY WAS READY. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. I DO NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING THIS CAR.
BOTH WHEN THE CAR IS IN MOTION AND STATIONARY, THE STEERING WHEEL MAKES A LOUD KNOCKING SOUND WHEN YOU TURN IT LEFT OR RIGHT.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE THROTTLE BODY WAS FAULTY. THE THROTTLE BODY WAS REPAIRED ,BUT THE FAILURE CONTINUED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 95,000.
STEERING COLUMN CLICKS LOUDLY WHEN TURNING STEERING WHEEL LEFT OR RIGHT WHILE STATIONARY OR MOVING. STEERING COLUMN MAKES A LOUD RATTLING NOISE WHEN WHEN GOING OVER ANY BUMPS OR IF AT A HIGH SPEED. VEHICLE WAS MANUFACTURED 1 MONTH AFTER A RECALL WAS ISSUED FOR THE SAME ISSUE AT THE SAME MANUFACTURING FACILITY BUT MY VEHICLE IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. PROBLEM STARTED AT ABOUT 75,000 MILES.

ANYTIME I DRIVE OVER 40 MPH THE STEERING WHEEL MAKES A LOUD CLICKING NOISE AND SHAKES HEAVILY. IT'S HARD TO CONTROL THE WHEEL IT FEELS LIKE SOMETHING IS LOOSE IN THE STEERING COLUMN. THE CLICKING SOUNDS AS IF SOMETHING IS VIBRATING SO HARD THAT IT BANGING ON SOMETHING. WHEN I TOOK IT TO MY MECHANIC HE INFORMED ME HE REPLACED A FLEXIBLE COUPLING IN 2 2011 SONATAS WITHIN THE LAST 6 WKS. I LOOKED ONLINE ABOUT THE SPECIFIC ISSUE AND THOUNDSAND OF 2011 SONATA OWNERS WERE COMPLAINING ABOUT THE SAME THING. I CALLED THE HYUNDAI OF FT. MILL DEALERSHIP IN FT MILL SC WHERE I PURCHASED THE CAR TO EXPLAIN WHAT I HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING. SERVICE REP LARRY V. SAID THAT IS A COMMON PROBLEM AMONGST SOME SONATAS MADE IN 2011 WHICH IS WHY HYUNDAI BUILD THE VEHICLE WITH A METAL COUPLING VS. A RUBBER ONE. HE SAID IT'S A DANGEROUS MATTER BECAUSE THE STEERING WHEEL IS NOT FULLY ATTACHED AND THE CAR COULD LOSE CONTROL WHILE DRIVING AND THE FRAGMENT WEAR DOWN MORE AND MORE AS YOU DRIVE. HE INFORMED ME TO HAVE IT REPLACED ASAP AND IT CAN COST UP TO 300.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THERE WAS NO REMEDY AVAILABLE TO REPAIR THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 98,000.

THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 97,000.
BEGINNING AUGUST 31ST, 2015 MY 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA'S STEERING WHEEL STARTED MAKING A CLICKING NOISE WHENEVER IT DROVE OVER ANY LARGE BUMPY AREAS IN THE ROAD, NO MATTER THE SPEED DRIVEN OVER THE BUMPS. OVER THE NEXT WEEK THE STEERING WHEEL ITSELF HAS STARTED TO FEEL LIKE IT IS LOOSENING AND NOW MAKES THE CLICKING NOISE WHENEVER STEERING WHEEL IS TURNED AT ALL. VERY LITTLE MOVEMENT FROM THE STEERING WHEEL CAUSES A CLICKING NOISE NOW AND THERE IS SIGNIFICANT MOVEMENT IN THE WHEEL FROM THE COLUMN, EVEN WHEN NOT IN MOTION. THE STEERING ITSELF SEEMS TO BE AFFECTED NOW AS WELL, AS IT TAKES MORE MANEUVERING FROM THE WHEEL BY ME TO DRIVE IN NORMAL CONDITIONS. FROM WHAT I HAVE READ ONLINE AND FROM THE RECALL ON SOME 2011 SONATA'S THIS ISSUE CAN BECOME VERY DANGEROUS AND LIFE THREATENING. I LOOKED UP THE VIN TO MY VEHICLE AND ACCORDING TO NHTSA AND HYUNDAI.COM MY VEHICLE IS NOT COVERED UNDER THIS RECALL, EVEN THOUGH THE ISSUES ARE EXACTLY THE SAME AS WHAT THE RECALL COVERS.

THIS ISSUE NEEDS TO BE INVESTIGATED FOR ROOT CAUSE AND CORRECTIVE ACTIONS. THIS COUPLER SHOULD NOT BE WEARING OUT AFTER 81,319 MILES. ALSO , IF THIS HAD NOT BEEN FIXED SOON. , IT MAY CAUSED A STEERING ISSUE. LAST, I HAVE READ THERE ARE SEVERAL HUNDRED REPORTS OF THIS COUPLER ISSUE. I ALREADY HAD ANOTHER POPPING ISSUE WITH STEERING LAST SPRING THAT THE GEAR IN STEERING RACK FAILED PER SERVICE REPORT AND WAS REPLACED .FORTUNATELY UNDER WARRANTY. RESULTS OF DIAGNOSIS STATED ON SERVICE DESCRIPTION "CODE IN ACU FOR OCS MODULE. RECOMMEND REPLACEMENT OF PASSENGER SEAT BOTTOM". IT WAS STATED THAT WITH THE AIRBAG LIGHT ON ,THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT COULD NOT GUARANTEE AIRBAG WOULD WORK. SO WE IMMEDIATELY ORDERED RECOMMENDED AIRBAG PARTS. ( FRONT PASSENGER SEAT BOTTOM) AT A MAJOR COST OF $1,246. AND LABOR COST OF $165. PARTS CAME IN AND WERE INSTALLED ON SEPTEMBER 9,2015. AIRBAG LIGHT IS OFF . THIS SAFETY SYSTEM NEEDS TO BE INVESTIGATED FOR ROOT CAUSE AND CORRECTIVE ACTIONS. WITH ONLY 81,319 MILES , THIS FALLS WAY SHORT OF LONG TERM PERFORMANCE. . WITH SAFETY OF MY FAMILY AT STAKE WITH THIS ISSUE I HAD NO OTHER CHOICE BUT TO GET THIS ISSUE FIXED . PLUS IT WOULD NOT PASS STATE INSPECTION. LAST I HAVE SEEN SEVERAL OTHER REPORTS OF AIRBAG LIGHTS ON FOR HYUNDAI SONATA 201, SAME PROBLEM.
8/31/15 TOOK MY CAR FOR SERVICE AT A HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP. WAS TOLD THE STEERING COUPLING NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. WHEN I ASKED THE MECHANIC HOW WAS THIS DETERMINED,HE STATED BY LISTENING AS HE TURNED THE STEERING WHEEL. I WAS GIVEN THE COST AS $360.00. ON 10/19/15,I RETURNED FOR AN OIL CHANGE AND WAS REMINDED ABOUT THE STEERING COUPLING. I PURCHASED THIS CAR IN OCTOBER,2012. I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS IS HAPPENING. I HAVE READ OTHER DRIVERS HAVE HAD SIMILAR PROBLEMS. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THIS INVESTIGATED. IT MAKES NO SENSE THAT WE ARE HAVING SUCH PROBLEMS AND THE CAR ISN'T 5 YEARS OLD YET. IN MID--AUGUST 2015, MY CAR BEGAN TO HAVE ODD THINGS HAPPEN SUCH AS THE CAR ALARM RANDOMLY GOING OFF. I REPLACED THE BATTERY THINKING IT MAY BE THE CAUSE. THAT DID NOT HELP. THE ALARM STILL RANDOMLY WENT OFF. I DID NOT THINK THIS WAS A SERIOUS PROBLEM UNTIL MY DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. ON AUG 14TH SHE REPORTED TO ME THAT HER STEERING BECAME ERRATIC REGARDLESS OF WHAT SHE DID. AFTER SHE PULLED OVER, SHE NOTICED THE FUEL GAUGE WENT TO ZERO AND THE LOW FUEL LIGHT BEGAN BLINKING DESPITE HAVING RECENTLY FILLED THE TANK. WHEN SHE GOT BACK ON THE ROAD, THE CRUISE CONTROL SUDDENLY STOPPED WORKING. FINALLY, WITHIN THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS, THE BRAKE LIGHTS CAME ON AND WOULD NOT GO OFF. THIS CAUSED THE LEFT TAIL LIGHT ASSEMBLY TO COMPLETELY MELT! THEN, ON AUG 24TH, SHE DROVE THE CAR TO O'BRIEN HYUNDAI IN FT MYERS, FL. THEY REPLACED THE STEERING ANGLE SENSOR, SENDING UNIT, BRAKE SWITCH, BRAKE SWITCH STOPPER, AND TAIL LIGHT ASSEMBLY. THEY COULD NOT TELL HER OR ME WHAT THE ROOT CAUSE WAS FOR THIS ELECTRICAL ISSUE THAT NEARLY CAUSED A ACCIDENT.
WHEN TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL LEFT TO RIGHT, AN AUDIBLE MECHANICAL CLANKING NOISE IS HEARD IN THE STEERING COLUMN SYSTEM. ADDITIONALLY, YOU CAN FEEL FEEDBACK IN THE STEERING WHEEL WHEN THE CLANKING NOISE IS OCCURRING. THIS DEFECT IS BEST FOUND WHEN TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL QUICKLY TO THE LEFT AND THEN TO THE RIGHT, OR VICE VERSA. TOOK CAR TO FIRESTONE TODAY TO FIND PROBLEM, AND WAS TOLD IT WAS THE "STEERING COLUMN INTERMEDIATE SHAFT." THIS PART IS A RECALL ITEM LISTED FOR THIS YEAR/MAKE/MODEL. HOWEVER, MY VIN DOESN'T QUALIFY AS PART OF THIS RECALL. OBVIOUSLY THIS DEFECT IS WIDER SPREAD THAN CURRENTLY LISTED, AND DEFINITELY NEEDS TO INCLUDE MY VIN CAR. NOTE: I WORK AS AN AVIATION SAFETY INSPECTOR FOR THE FAA (FG-1825-13), SO I WORK IN THE SAME JOB POSITION BUT FOR AIRPLANES INSTEAD. AS SOON AS THE VEHICLE STOPS MOVING INSTANCE IF I STOP AT A RED LIGHT IT BEGINS BLOWING HOT AIR AGAIN. WHEN I HAD MY OIL CHANGED IN THE LAST TIME I CHECKED THE OIL AND IT WAS ALREADY BLACK I TOOK THE CAR IN FOR THESE SERVICE FOR THE RECALL FOR THE ENGINE INSPECTION AND I FEEL LIKE HYUNDAI IS GOING TO SAY THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR BECAUSE THEY'RE REPRESENTING HYUNDAI. I SPOKE TO SOMEONE IN THE SERVICE DEPT AT MY LOCAL DEALER AND WAS TOLD IT WAS A KNOWN ISSUE BUT HYUNDAI WILL NOT COVER THE COST OF REPAIR. IN RESEARCHING THIS ISSUE I ALSO SEE WHERE THERE HAD BEEN A PREVIOUS RECALL ON THIS PROBLEM BUT IT HAS SINCE CLOSED. WE BOUGHT THE CAR USED AFTER THE FACT. I THINK IT'S KIND OF SHADY THAT IF HYUNDAI IS HAVING RECURRING ISSUES ON THE SAME MAKES AND MODELS EVEN YEARS AFTER THE ORIGINAL RECALL, THEN MAYBE THEY OUGHT TO ISSUE ANOTHER. MY VIN # MAY NOT HAVE BEEN INCLUDED IN THE ORIGINAL RECALL, BUT OBVIOUSLY THEY HAVEN'T ADEQUATELY ADDRESSED THE ISSUE TO PREVENT IT FROM HAPPENING TO FUTURE VEHICLES. WE BEGAN HEARING SOME NOISES FROM UNDER THE HOOD, AND SCHEDULED TO TAKE THE CAR IN FOR MAINTENANCE AND AN OIL CHANGE ON WEDNESDAY OF THE FOLLOWING WEEK (8/18/2015 WAS OUR APPOINTMENT). ON 8/17/15 THE CAR STARTED LIKE NORMAL, WE GOT BACK ON THE ROAD, AND MY HUSBAND BEGAN TO ACCELERATE. IT ACCELERATED TO 15MPH, THEN STOPPED ACCELERATING. THE CAR HAD SHUT OFF. THE LIGHTS ON THE DASH CAME ON, THE POWER STEERING AND POWER BRAKES CEASED TO WORK, AND WE BARELY MADE IT OFF THE ROAD. WE PUT IT IN PARK, TOOK THE KEY OUT, WAITED FOR A MINUTE, AND TRIED RESTARTING IT. IT WOULD CLICK ONCE, THEN NOTHING. WE TRIED JUMPING IT, NOTHING. WE WERE TOLD IT SOUNDED LIKE THE ALTERNATOR, SO HAD IT TOWED TO A NEARBY AAA SHOP. THE FOLLOWING DAY (MONDAY, 8/17/15) WE RECEIVED A CALL THAT THE ENGINE HAD SEIZED. AND UPON CALLING THE DEALERSHIP WE BOUGHT THE CAR FROM, FOUND OUT THAT THE EXTENDED WARRANTY WE PURCHASED, HAD JUST EXPIRED AT 109K MILES AND WE WERE AT 130K MILES. WE ASKED THE AAA AND THE DEALERSHIP TO CALL AROUND TO GET PRICING ON HOW MUCH AN ENGINE WOULD BE. THEY WERE SHOCKED TO LEARN THAT THE ENGINE FOR THE 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA IS UNAVAILABLE NATIONWIDE, INDEFINITELY. THIS IS UNHEARD OF AND IS WHAT PROMPTED ME TO SEARCH ONLINE TO CHECK IF A SEIZED ENGINE WAS ONE OF THE MANY PROBLEMS/RECALLS/MISTAKES MADE WITH THIS CAR, AND SURPRISINGLY, IT WAS! HYUNDAI IS GOING TO REPLACE THE ENGINE UNDER WARRANTEE, HOWEVER THEY ONLY WARRANTEE THIS BRAND NEW LONG BLOCK (ENGINE) FOR 12 MONTHS OR 12,000 MILES INSTEAD OF WARRANTING THE ENGINE FOR AN ORIGINAL 10 YEARS OR 100,000 MILES. THE PROBLEM IS CAN THIS NEW ENGINE BE TRUSTED SINCE WE DON'T KNOW WHEN THE ENGINE WAS ORIGINALLY BUILT. HYUNDAI REQUIRES THAT ALL OIL CHANGE RECORDS BE GIVEN TO DEALERSHIP.
