I WAS ON MY WAY HOME FROM WORK AND ACCELERATING FROM A STOP AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT WHEN THE CAR SEIZED AND INITIALLY APPEARED TO LOSE POWER. NO INDICATOR LIGHTS CAME ON PRIOR TO THE INCIDENT OCCURRING AND THERE WERE NO OTHER INDICATORS OF ANY PROBLEMS SUCH AS SMOKE, A SMELL, OR ANY LEAKS ON THE GROUND WHEN DRIVING OR PARKED. AFTER PULLING THE CAR OVER AND OPENING THE HOOD EVERYTHING APPEARED TO BE FINE. WE WERE UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM AND HAD IT TOWED TO A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP. THE NEXT DAY THE REPAIR SHOP CALLED AND STATED THERE APPEARED TO BE SOME SORT OF UNKNOWN DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE WHICH CAUSED IT TO COMPLETELY DRAIN OF OIL. OIL COVERED THE ENTIRE AREA OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT UNDERNEATH THE CASING. THE MECHANICS AT THE SHOP WERE UNABLE TO GET THE ENGINE TO TURN AT ALL. THE VEHICLE JUST HAD A FULL SERVICE AT THE DEALERSHIP ON 4/24/2015 INCLUDING: OIL & FILTER CHANGE, FUEL INDUCTION SERVICE, REPLACE ENGINE AIR FILTER, REPLACE CABIN AIR FILTER, ROTATE TIRES, CHECK BRAKES, CHECK EXHAUST, SUSPENSION, BELTS, AND HOSES, TOP OFF ALL FLUIDS, AND MULTI-POINT INSPECTION. AT THAT TIME THE CAR WAS NOTED IN PERFECT WORKING CONDITION AND NO ISSUES WERE ANNOTATED. THE ESTIMATED COST TO REPAIR THE ENGINE IS BETWEEN $9,000 AND $10,000, BUT THE REPAIR SHOP HASN'T FULLY ASSESSED THE DAMAGE TO THE REST OF THE VEHICLE. FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND THIS SHOULD BE UNDER THE EXTENDED POWERTRAIN WARRANTY, BUT I'M CURRENTLY GOING THROUGH THE CLAIMS PROCESS TO TRY AND RESOLVE THIS. A QUICK SEARCH BRINGS UP A MULTITUDE OF SIMILAR CASES FOR HYUNDAI SONATAS REFERRING TO CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE WITH NEAR IDENTICAL CIRCUMSTANCES TO WHAT I EXPERIENCED.
WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AND ATTEMPTING TO BRAKE THE STEERING WHEEL SHOOK RAPIDLY. THE STEERING WHEEL MAKES A CLICK WHEN IN PARK AND I MOVE THE STEEPING WHEEL SLIGHTLY OFF CENTER TO THE LEFT OR THE RIGHT. WHEN DRIVING AT ANY SPEED AND GO OVER BUMPS ON THE ROAD THE STEERING WHEEL MAKES A CLUNK NOISE. THE STEERING FEELS LOOSE WHEN DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT SPEEDS OF 60+. THIS IS AN ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE RECALLED. WHEN I SPOKE TO THE DEALER THEY SAID THAT MY CAR DOESN'T HAVE ANY RECALLS ON THE STEERING! BUT FOUND RIGHT HERE ON THIS WEBSITE, SHOWS THE TSB#10-01-32. WE PURCHASED THIS CAR IN 2011 WITH THE FULL WARRANTY INTACT FROM CRAIN KIA, WHICH ALSO OWNS CRAIN HYUNDAI THE VEHICLE WAS A DEALERSHIP DEMO VEHICLE. AFTER RUNNING A VIN SEARCH ON THIS WEBSITE, IT HAS NOT BEEN INSPECTED OR REPAIRED. THIS IS UNSAFE AND PUTS THE LIVES OF NOT JUST THE OWNERS/DRIVERS OF THIS VEHICLE BUT OTHER DRIVERS ON THE ROAD AS WELL IN SEVERE DANGER. AT THIS TIME, IF NOTHING IS DONE, WE WILL PURSUE LEGAL ACTION AGAINST HYUNDAI NORTH AMERICA AND CRAIN HYUNDAI / KIA. FOR THEIR LACK OF PROFESSIONALISM, SELLING "UNSAFE" CARS TO THE PUBLIC! TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA. WITHIN WEEKS OF OWNING THE VEHICLE, THERE HAD BEEN MULTIPLE FAILURES. THE VEHICLE HAD A DRASTIC REDUCTION IN SPEED WITHOUT WARNING, THERE WAS A STRONG BURNING ODOR, AND THE VEHICLE STALLED RANDOMLY SEVERAL TIMES. THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE TOWED TO PATTY PECK HONDA (555 SUNNYBROOK RD, RIDGELAND, MS 39157, (601) 957-3400) DUE TO IT STALLING. THE DEALER RECOMMENDED THAT THE VEHICLE BE SERVICED BY AN AUTHORIZED DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO WILSON PREMIER HYUNDAI (450 STEED RD, RIDGELAND, MS 39157, (601) 856-6423) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THERE WAS A LOSS OF OIL THAT REQUIRED THAT THE OIL CONSTANTLY BE REFILLED AND METAL SHAVINGS WERE PRESENT IN THE ENGINE ASSEMBLY. ALSO, THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER WAS REPLACED, BUT THE BURNING ODOR WORSENED. THE DEALER PROVIDED A LOANER VEHICLE, BUT THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE WAS RETURNED UNDER THE GUIDELINES THAT AN OIL CONSUMPTION TEST SHOULD BE PERFORMED EVERY 1,000 MILES. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT FELT THAT THE MANUFACTURER AND THE DEALER FAILED TO PROVIDE A PERMANENT REMEDY TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED NUMEROUS TIMES. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 73,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH, THERE WAS A CLICKING NOISE THAT CAME FROM THE STEERING COLUMN AND THE VEHICLE VEERED TO THE RIGHT WITHOUT WARNING. WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED, THE STEERING WHEEL BEGAN TO SHAKE. THE FAILURE RECURRED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO INFORMED THAT THE STEERING COLUMN FAILED AND SHOULD BE TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND WAS INFORMED THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 10V426000 (STEERING). THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 70,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED AND ALL THE WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT HAD TO MANEUVER TO THE ROAD TO A COMPLETE STOP. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THE ENGINE SEIZED AND WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE WHY THE FAILURE OCCURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
AN EXISTING RECALL (NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 13V113000) INDICATES THAT FOR 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA THE STOP LAMP SWITCH MAY NOT FUNCTION CORRECTLY. THE RECALL NOTICE STATES THAT: "DURING THE AFFECTED MODELS' PRODUCTION PERIODS, SOME VEHICLES WERE EQUIPPED WITH STOP LAMP SWITCH ASSEMBLIES THAT MAY EXPERIENCE INTERMITTENT SWITCH POINT CONTACT. POTENTIALLY RESULT IN INTERMITTENT OPERATION OF THE PUSH-BUTTON START FEATURE,(WICH IS HAPPENING) INTERMITTENT ABILITY TO REMOVE THE VEHICLE'S SHIFTER FROM THE PARK POSITION( ALSO HAPPENING), OR INTERMITTENT OPERATION OF THE STOP LAMPS.(HAPPENING ALSO)" ALL OF THESE SYMPTOMS HAVE BEEN OBSERVED IN MY VEHICLE, YET THE BRAKE LIGHT SWTICH WAS REPLACED ON A ROUTINE SERVICE FOR A RECALL IN 2014. I WAS NOT EXPERIENCING ANY TROUBLE AT THAT TIME. NOW AT 65000 MILES AND LESS THEN ONE YEAR LATER MY BRAKES WONT TURN OFF WHEN MY CAR IS OFF RESULTING IN MY BATTERY TO DIE. HYUNDAI HAS HAD TO COME JUMP MY CAR THREE TIMES. WHEN I BROUGHT IT IN THEY SAID THEY ALREADY REPLACED IT AND ARE NO LONGER LIABLE FOR IT. NOW MY CAR IS STOPPING AND NOT ALLOWING ME TO ACCELERATE INTERMITTENLY DURING DRIVING THE VEHICLE. I ALSO SMELL BURNING RUBBER COMING FROM THE INSIDE BRAKE AREA NEAR THE SWITCH. SECONDLY, MY STEERING COULUM AND ALIGNMENT WERE OFF. I BROUGHT THE CAR IN TO HYUNDAI IN 2014 BECAUSE OF THE STEERING BEING VERY LOOOSE AND MAKING A KNOCKING NOISE WHEN YOU MOVED IT BACK AND FORTH. THEY SAID IT WAS THE COUPLING WICH THEY REAPLACED AND IT DID NOT RESOLVE THE MALFUNCTION. THEY THEN REPLACED THE STEERING RACK AND PERFOMED AN ALIGNMENT AND TIRE ROTATION WITH NEW TIRES. THE NOISE WENT AWAY BUT THE ALIGNMENT IS STILL TERRIBLY OFF. NOW WHEN I MAKE RIGHT TURNS IT MAKES A LOUD CLICKING NOISE AGAIN AND SHAKES AT 65MPH OR OVER. MY WARRENTY ENDED AT 60,000 MILES AND NOW NOTHING IS COVERED. I PAID FOR AN EXTENDED WARRENTY AT PURCHUSE OF WHICH THEY HAVE NO RECORD OF.
MY 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA LIMITED DISPLAYED A LOUD RATTLING SOUND FROM THE THE STEERING COLUMN WHEN DRIVEN OVER ROUGH ROADWAY. THERE WAS ALSO A CLUNKING SOUND FROM STEERING COLUMN WHEN WHEEL WAS TURNED IN EITHER DIRECTION. ALSO NOTICED THE STEERING WHEEL/COLUMN HAD DROPPED ALMOST 2 INCHES FROM ITS ORIGINALLY MOUNTED POSITION. LOCAL DEALERSHIP INDICATED A FLEXIBLE COUPLING IN THE STEERING SHAFT SHOWED EXCESSIVE DETERIORATION--CAUSING PLAY IN THE STEERING, THE NOISE AND THE DROPPING OF THE STEERING COLUMN. HE STATED IT WAS THE WORST HE HAS EVER SEEN--EXTREMELY DANGEROUS--HIS WORDS--AS STEERING CAPABILITY COULD BE LOST. HE WANTED TO KEEP THE FAULTY PART FOR REFERENCE--I DECLINED AND MAINTAINED THE PART FOR MY RECORDS. I WAS ADVISED HYUNDAI WAS AWARE OF THIS PARTICULAR DEFECT AND THERE WAS NO RECALL AT THIS TIME. SERVICE MANAGER SIMPLY SAID THEY DON'T MAKE PARTS LIKE THEY USED TO. THE STEERING SHAFT COUPLER WAS REPLACED AND THE STEERING COLUMN WAS REALIGNED. THE REPAIR WAS $383.72 WITH THE PART COSTING $49.50. THIS WAS NOT COVERED BY RECALL OR THE EXTENDED WARRANTY. I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS SPECIFIC DEFECT AND FOUND IT TO BE AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS ONE, AND ONE WHICH THERE HAVE BEEN NUMEROUS PREVIOUS COMPLAINTS FILED WITH THE NHTSA--I STRONGLY BELIEVE A RECALL IS WARRANTED--FOR THE SAFETY OF THOSE IN THE VEHICLE AND ON THE ROADWAY. WHEN THE VEHICLE REACHES 70MPH THE STEERING WHEEL SHAKES VIOLENTLY AND THE VEHICLE BECOMES DIFFICULT TO CONTROL. THERE IS A NOTICEABLE CLUNK AND PLAY IN THE STEERING IN PARK OR DRIVING. TIRES AND ALIGNMENT HAVE BEEN RULED OUT. THE NOISE IS COMING FROM THE POWER STEERING MOTOR.

I OWN A 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA THAT RECENTLY BEGAN MAKING A LOUD CLUNKING NOISE FROM THE INTERIOR STEERING. THE STEERING IS NOW LOOSE AND ALONG WITH THE LOUD CLUNKING NOISE YOU CAN FEEL THE CLUNK AS YOU TURN THE STEERING WHEEL. I HAVE AN APPOINTMENT SCHEDULED TO REPAIR THE ISSUE ALONG WITH A FEW OTHER RECALLS. I WAS ADVISED TO CONTACT HYUNDAI. I CONTACTED HYUNDAI AND ADVISED THEM OF THE ISSUE. I WAS INFORMED THERE WAS A RECALL ON CERTAIN 2011 SONATAS IN REFERENCE TO THE SAME ISSUE, HOWEVER THE RECALL HAD BEEN CLOSED AND MY VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THAT RECALL. ACCORDING TO THE ORIGINAL RECALL THE STEERING COMPONENTS CAN FAIL OR DISCONNECT CAUSING THE STEERING WHEEL TO BECOME INOPERABLE WHILE DRIVING.

THE STEERING WHEEL FEELS LOOSE AND THERE IS A CLICKING SOUND WHEN THE WHEEL MOVES FROM SIDE TO SIDE. OCCURS BOTH STATIONARY AND IN MOTION, CITY AND HIGHWAY. NOTE THAT THERE WERE TWO RECALLS FOR EXACTLY THIS PROBLEM IN 2010 BUT OUR VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. RECALL NUMBERS 10V426000 AND 10V457000. FIRST NOTICED AROUND JULY BUT HAS GOTTEN NOTICEABLY WORSE RECENTLY.
I HAVE A 2011 SONATA,COMPLAINS OF EXCESSIVE OIL BURN AND LOUD NOISE.CAR BURNS AROUND 1 QUATS PER 1000 MILES.DEALER DONE A OIL CONSUMPTION TEST AND FOUND OUT ITS BURNING TOO MUCH OIL.THEY WANTS ME TO REPLACE THE ENGINE.I HAVE DONE ALL THE OIL CHANGES AT 3000 MILES AND ITS WELL MAINTAINED.DEALER SAID EVERYTHING IS FINE WITH MY CAR AS PER THE 2015 ENGINE RECALL IS CONCERNED.THEY WANT ME TO PAY FOR AN ENGINE REPLACEMENT,WHEN ITS WELL KNOWN THAT 2011 SONATA ENGINES HAVE MANUFACTURING DEFECT.I FOUND LOT OF PEOPLE HAVING SAME ISSUE END UP IN ENGINE STALL.ITS A MATTER OF SAFETY.NOBODY EXPECT A NEW MODEL CAR TO BURN OIL LIKE THIS AND DEALER WILL NEVER SAY THAT I WAS LOW ON OIL,WHEN I TAKE THE CAR FOR AN OIL CHANGE.I FOUND OUT THE PROBLEM AFTER RANDOMLY CHECKING MY OIL LEVEL.IT WAS WELL BELOW LOW.ALL OTHER CARS WE HAVE NEED NO TOP UP BETWEEN OIL CHANGE.I REQUEST NHTSA TO TAKE THIS MATTER SERIOUSLY.

THE VIN WAS INCLUDED IN THE RECALL ASSOCIATED WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V568000 (ENGINE); HOWEVER, THE DEALER DECLINED TO REPLACE THE ENGINE ASSEMBLY. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 70,000.
2011 HYUNDAI SONATA. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO MUFFLER NOISES, FUSE OUTLET REPLACEMENT, LOOSE WINDOW HANDLE AND ENGINE REPLACEMENT REPAIR ISSUES. *SMD THE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED THE BAFFLES IN THE MUFFLER WERE COMING APART. ALSO, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY STALLED WHILE IN THE MIDST OF DRIVING AND IT WOULD NOT RE-START. THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE TOWED TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER STATED THE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. HOWEVER, IT WOULD HAVE TO BE TAKEN APART TO SEE WHAT CAUSED IT TO HAPPEN. THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONSUMER THE CONNECTING RODS WERE BAD AND A RECALL HAD BEEN ISSUE ON THE ENGINE DUE TO CONCERNS OF METAL DEBRIS ENTERING THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT CAUSING THE CONNECTING RODS TO FAIL. THE ENGINE WAS REPLACED. HOWEVER, WHEN THE CONSUMER WENT TO RETRIEVE THE VEHICLE, THE OTHER PROBLEMS WERE NOT FIXED. WHEN THE CONSUMER DROVE OFF THE LOT, THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO SHAKE VIOLENTLY AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONSUMER THE ENGINE THEY PUT IN WAS BAD, AND IT WOULD BE MONTHS BEFORE THEY COULD GET ANOTHER ONE. *JB
STEERING KNOCKING NOISE - APPEARS TO BE RELATED TO THE STEERING COUPLER THAT HAS NOT YET RECEIVED A RECALL. HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THAT THEY SEE THE ISSUE A LOT, BUT WOULD STILL CHARGE TO DIAGNOSE AND REPAIR. THE NOISE HAS BEEN ON-GOING FOR QUITE SOME TIME AND HAS INCREASINGLY GOTTEN WORSE
THE PLASTIC STEERING COUPLER IS DEFECTED IN THE POWER STEERING MOTOR WHICH CAUSES A LOUD CLICKING SOUND OR NOISE WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL IS SHIFTED RIGHT OR LEFT.
WE PURCHASED THE CAR USED IN 2012. IN AUGUST OF 2015, THE ENGINE SIZED WHILE MY SPOUSE WAS DRIVING TO WORK. ON THE INTERSTATE AT ABOUT 55MPH. WE ENDED UP HAVING TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE ENGINE TO THE TUNE OF $4000+. THIS SHOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED TO A CAR THAT IS NOT EVEN 5 YEARS OLD. THIS IS NOT OUR ONLY ISSUE WITH THIS MAKE/MODEL AND NOT MY FIRST COMPLAINT.

THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT SAID THE BULBS HAD MELTED THE PANELING AND THAT THEY HAD TO SHAVE DOWN THE PANEL TO GET THE BULB TO WORK. NOW THE LEFT TAIL LIGHT IS NOT WORKING AND THEY SAID I NEED TO REPLACE IT FOR ANOTHER $250 THIS IS NOT CAUSED BY ME THE CONSUMER AND WITH THE MELTING OF THIS I AM AFRAID IT WILL CAUSE AN ELECRTRICAL FIRE IN MY REAR. DRIVING AND HEARD A LOUD "BANG" AND FELT VIBRATION FROM FRONT OF CAR. THE STEERING BECAME VERY DIFFICULT AND CAR WAS ALMOST UNCONTROLLABLE. PULLED OVER TO SIDE OF ROAD, EXITED VEHICLE AND COULD SEE CAR WAS SITTING VERY LOW TO GROUND ON FRONT PASSENGER SIDE, TIRE WAS FLAT AND COULD SEE INTERIOR SIDE WALL WAS SHREDDED. REPLACED THE TIRE WITH SPARE AND DROVE APPROX. THREE MILES TO TIRE DEALER AS WE SUSPECTED IT WAS ONLY A TIRE FAILURE AT THAT TIME. THEY LOOKED AT CAR AND STATED THAT THE COIL SPRING HAD BROKEN AND HAD CUT THE TIRE. SUBSEQUENTLY HAD CAR TOWED TO DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIRS. HAD BEEN DRIVING CAR EARLIER IN DAY WITH NO APPARENT ISSUES AND HAD NOT HIT ANY POTHOLES OR OTHER ROAD HAZARDS THAT WOULD HAVE BROKEN A COIL SPRING. THERE WERE NO ISSUES WITH ROAD CONDITIONS AT THE POINT OF INCIDENT EITHER. EXTREMELY CONCERNING THAT THIS WOULD FAIL WITH NO INDICATION OF ANY ISSUE WITH SUSPENSION/STEERING SYSTEM. THIS SEEMS LIKE A PREMATURE TIME FOR A COIL SPRING FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE AND WAS NOT ABLE TO CONFIRM WHEN THE PARTS WERE TO BECOME AVAILABLE. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE.
WHEN DRIVING THIS CAR THERE IS SMALL JERK OF THE STEERING WHEEL ACCOMPANIED BY A LOUD CLICK. THIS OCCURS INTERMITTENTLY WHILE DRIVING STRAIGHT ON ANY STREET OR HIGHWAY AND ALWAYS OCCURS WHEN MAKING TURNS IN EITHER DIRECTION. THE CONDITION WAS BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION BY A STATE INSPECTION TECHNICIAN IN 2015 WHEN IT WAS ONLY A VERY LIGHT CLICKING NOISE WHEN TURNING LEFT OR RIGHT WITH NO MOTION FELT IN THE STEERING WHEEL. THE CONDITION HAS PROGRESSIVELY WORSENED AND NOW THE CLICKING IS QUITE LOUD ACCOMPANIED BY AN EASILY FELT JERK IN THE STEERING WHEEL.
RIDING DOWN THE INTERSTATE LOOK THROUGH MY SIDE MIRROR AND NOTICED MY TAIL LIGHT HANGING OFF AND IT FELL OFF BEFORE I COULD STOP TO CHECK IT,AND WHEN I DID STOP I NOTICED THE ONE ONE THE OPPOSITE SIDE WAS ABOUT TO DO THE SAME.
2.0 TURBO ENGINE. DRIVING ON HIGHWAY, VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT FLASHING ANY WARNING LIGHTS. PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY AND CHECKED ALL FLUIDS, NONE WERE BELOW MINIMUM LEVEL. HAD CAR TOWED TO DEALER ON THE SAME DAY, DEALER CALLED ME TWO DAYS LATER TO SAY THAT ENGINE IS SEIZED AND IT WILL BE $8900 TO REPLACE THE ENGINE.
