STRONG FUEL ODOR SMELL OUTSIDE THE CAR WHEN CAR PARK INSIDE THE GARAGE SPECIALLY WHEN THE FUEL TANK IS FULL. *TR
THE FRONT INNER TIRES GET CUPPING OVER THE TIME, I HAVE TO REPLACE THEM EVERY 10,000 MILES. ALL THE SUSPENSION PARTS ARE NEW PUT STILL THE PROBLEM GOING ON. IT IS A MANUFACTURING PROBLEM WITH THE HEAVY ENGINE GET THE LOAD ON THE POWER TRAIN AND WITH THE TIME IT LOSING AND MAKE THE TIRES CUPPING FROM THE INNER SIDE.
FIRST INCIDENT OCCURRED ON 1/21/13 WHEN MY MERCEDES SMELLED LIKE IT WAS LEAKING GAS IN GARAGE. FUMES WERE SO BAD THAT WE PARKED IT OUTSIDE AS WE WERE LEAVING FOR TRIP. I WAS AFRAID IT COULD CATCH FIRE. I HAD NOTICED A GAS SMELL ONCE BEFORE. ABOUT SIX MONTHS PRIOR. IT WENT AWAY AND THE CAR HAD BEEN IN SHOP AND NOTHING NOTED. SO I DID NOT WORRY. GOT BACK FROM TRIP AND TOOK IT IN. BOTH THE RIGHT AND LEFT FUEL SENDING UNITS WERE REPLACED. ON THE LEFT A SEAL RING, CABLE HARNESS AND A BRACKET WERE REPLACED. THE RIGHT SIDE A SEAL RING WAS DONE WITH THE UNIT. I HAD OIL LEAKING FROM ENGINE SO THEY REPLACED A CAMPAIGN, ENGINE WIRING, RIGHT CAMSHAFT SOLENOID, AND OILCENTRIFUGE. THEY KEPT MY CAR A WEEK AS I HAVE HAD MANY PROBLEMS AND THEY WANTED TO MAKE IT RIGHT WELL IT TURNED INTO A NIGHTMARE. CAR WENT BACK IN AS OIL HAD LEAKED ON EXHAUST AND CAR SMELLED ON FIRE. THEY DEGREASED IT AND I GOT IT BACK. NOW THE WORST OF THIS. THE REPLACED FUEL SENDING UNIT WAS DEFECTIVE. I WAS ON FREEWAY WHEN MY CAR JUST STOPS RUNNING WHILE DRIVING IT. I ALMOST GOT HIT AT 60 MPH AND MY CAR SPUTTERS ONCE THAN STALLS AS I TRY TO ROLL OFF FREEWAY. I WAS SURE MY ENGINE SEIZED. IT TURNS OUT THE NEW FUEL SENDING UNIT HAD A DEFECTIVE FLOAT. I RAN OUT OF GAS AND ALMOST DIED BECAUSE OF IT. THERE ARE MANY COMPLAINTS ON THE INTERNET ABOUT THIS FUEL PROPULSION SYSTEM. I AM UNDER WARRANTY SO MINE IS REPLACED FOR FREE. THE PROBLEM IS THE GAS FUMES PUT YOU AT RISK FOR A FIRE. I WOULD THINK FOR ME IT WAS AT LEAST SIX MONTHS. I WAS TOLD THE FUEL WAS LEAKING BEHIND MY BACK SEAT. I AM SURE THAT IS NOT SAFE. THEN THE REPLACEMENT ALMOST KILLS ME. VERY UNHAPPY AS I HAD INTENDED TO KEEP THIS CAR BUT AM AFRAID TO DO SO. FYI MY TRANSMISSION BODY HAS BEEN REPLACED TOO. *TR
FUEL IS LEAKING FROM TANK AFTER FILLUP ON LEFT SIDE NEAR LEFT REAR TIRE. FIRST NOTICED FUEL GAUGE NOT WORKING WHEN I RAN OUT OF GAS AT 51,000 MILES IN 2011. DEALER TOLD ME GAUGE WAS LOCATED INSIDE TANK AND IT WOULD BE NECESSARY TO REPLACE TANK AT COST OF $2,000 W/O WARRANTY,SO I DID NOT FIX IT; JUST USED ODOMETER. WE HAVE NOTICED GAS FUMES IN GARAGE FOR A LONG TIME, BUT THOUGHT IT WAS FROM THE GAS ENGINES OF YARD TOOLS. AFTER A FILL UP 2 DAYS AGO, WE NOTICED A VERY STRONG ODOR NEXT TO CAR AND INVESTIGATED AND NOTICED SIGNS OF LIQUIDS ON PARTS OF UNDERCARRIAGE OF VEHICLE. DID AN INTERNET SEARCH AND FOUND THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE. PRESENT MILEAGE IS 87,000. *TR
WE HAVE SMELLED A GASOLINE SMELL IN OUR GARAGE FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS AND NEVER CONSIDERED IT WAS THE MERCEDES. WE ALSO KEEP SMALL GASOLINE TOOLS IN THE GARAGE AND A HARLEY DAVIDSON MOTORCYCLE. WE FILLED THE TANK ON JANUARY 21, 2013 AND THE NEXT MORNING THE SMELL WAS SO BAD WE NEED TO AIR OUT THE GARAGE. RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET REVEALED IT WAS THE MERCEDES. WE TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THE LEAK WAS FROM THE FUEL SENDING UNIT IN THE GASOLINE TANK. WE HAD IT REPAIRED AT A COST OF $739.09. MERCEDES HAS NOT OFFERED ANY RELIEF FOR THE COST OF THE REPAIR. *TR
I WAS USING THE WARMING SEATS AND HAD PULLED UP TO THE POST OFFICE TO DROP A LETTER IN THE BOX. THE LETTER HAD FALLEN TO THE GROUND. I GOT OUT AND PLACED THE LETTER IN THE BOX. I GOT BACK IN THE CAR AND PULLED UP TO KEEP FROM HOLDING UP TRAFFIC WHILE I HAD REPLACED MY SEAT BELT. A SUV HAD CROSSED MY PATH WHEN I SMELLED SOMETHING BURNING. I ASSUMED IT WAS EXHAUST FROM THE SUV. I WAS ABOUT TO PULL OFF THE PARKING LOT WHEN I NOTICED THICK WHITE SMOKING COMING FROM MY SEAT. I IMMEDIATELY TURNED OFF THE SEAT WARMER. THE SMOKE DISSIPATED AFTERWARDS.I CONTINUED TO DRIVE THE CAR ABOUT 1/2MILE TO THE GROCERY STORE. I GOT OUT AND NOTICED A BURN ON SEAT. *TR
THE CAR WAS FILLED WITH GAS AND WHEN I GOT HOME I COULD SMELL GAS AND I LOOKED AROUND THE CAR AND IT WAS DRIPPING A LOT OF GAS ON THE LEFTSIDE OF REAR WHEEL WELL. ALSO THERE WAS STRONG SMELL OF GAS INSIDE THE CAR. I JUST BOUGHT THIS LESS THAN A MONTH AND I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER FOR REPAIR. THERE HAS BEEN NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS AND THERE IS TSB REGARDING THIS ISSUE. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION AND THE DEALER IS TELLING ME THAT THEY DON'T KNOW ABOUT THE COMPLAINTS REGARDING THIS ISSUE. *TR
BEGINNING AT APPROXIMATELY 60,500 MILES MY 2007 MERCEDES BENZ E350 4MATIC SEDAN DEVELOPED A STRONG GASOLINE ODOR INSIDE THE VEHICLE. THIS SMELL PROGRESSIVELY GOT STRONGER AND UPON INSPECTION AT THE DEALERSHIP IT WAS FOUND THAT THE SENDING UNITS ATTACHED TO THE FUEL TANKS BELOW THE REAR DRIVER'S SIDE AND PASSENGER SIDE SEATS WERE LEAKING FUEL THROUGH A FAULTY SEAL CAUSING THE FUEL TO ABSORB INTO THE SEAT CUSHION. THIS LIKELY CREATED A POTENTIAL FIRE HAZARD INSIDE THE CABIN OF THE VEHICLE, PARTICULARLY IN THE REAR SEAT. *TR
1/9/2013 I TOOK THE CAR IN FOR THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. THEY FOUND THERE WAS A GAS SEAL LEAK AND THEY REPLACED THE GAS CAP. ON 7/30/2013 I TOOK MY CAR IN FOR THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. THERE WAS A GAS TANK LEAK. THEY HAD TO REPLACE THE GAS TANK. STRONG GASOLINE VAPOR SMELL IN CABIN OF CAR WHEN IT SITS IN THE GARAGE. THE ODOR BEGAN ABOUT 6 MONTHS AGO BUT IT ONLY SMELLED IN THE GARAGE NOT IN THE CAR. THE ODOR DISSIPATES AFTER DRIVING ABOUT 20 MILES. *TR
NHTSA ACTION# PE12001 STRONG FUEL/GASOLINE ODOR SMELL COMING FROM THE DRIVERS SIDE REAR WHEEL AREA. FUEL TANK IS FILLED TO FULL (AFTER IT "CLICKS" OFF) AND THIS IS WHEN THE ODOR IS MOST PREVALENT. THE E350 IS PARKED IN A SINGLE, DETACHED HOUSE'S 2-CAR GARAGE. FUEL/GASOLINE SMELL IS PARTICULARLY STRONG IN THE ENCLOSED 2-CAR GARAGE. I AM AFRAID THE THESE VAPORS WILL IGNITE WHEN IN AN ENCLOSED SPACE WITH THE FURNACE IN THE SHARING THE SAME SPACE (BEING THAT IT IS WINTER TIME NOW AND THE FURNACE IS NOW KICKING ON TO HEAT MY HOUSE). *TR
Fuel tank leak at the top of the tank. MB has well documented gasoline leaks for MB model 211 years 2003-2008. Notices were sent to owners of gas powered auto's but none were sent to DIESEL auto owners. The exact same procedure and parts are needed to repair DIESEL tanks as gasoline tanks. Either this is a oversight by MB or the problem was ignored. My DIESEL tank is leaking exactly as other documented gasoline MB vehicles model 211.
MY WIFE WAS DRIVING WHEN SHE SMELLED SOMETHING BURNING AND THEN FELT SOMETHING BURNING, SHE PULLED OVER AND JUMPED OUT TO CHECK AND FOUND THE SEAT WARMER HAD MALFUNCTIONED AND BURNED THROUGH THE BACK PORTION OF THE SEAT. HER SHIRT HAD A SLIGHT BURN TO IT AND SMOKE COVERED INTERIOR OF THE CAR. THE HOLE IN THE SEAT IS ABOUT THE SIZE OF A CIGARETTE BURN BUT DEEPER. SHE TOOK IT TO THE IMPORT REPAIR SHOP WHO DISCONNECTED THE POWER SOURCE WIRE TO THE SEAT HEATER FOR SAFETY. *TR
PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE USED WITH 60K MILES, DROVE IT ABOUT A WEEK WITH NO PROBLEMS. FILLED THE CAR WITH GAS ONE TIME AND NOTICED A STRONG SMELL OF FUEL IN THE GARAGE AND THE VEHICLE THE NEXT DAY. FUEL SMELL IN THE GARAGE LASTED SEVERAL DAYS, SMELL IN THE CAR IS VERY STRONG AND HAS NOT FADED OR GONE AWAY FOR OVER TWO WEEKS. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 MERCEDES E550. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE PARKED, SHE NOTICED A FUEL LEAK. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE FUEL TANK WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. AFTER THE REPAIR, THE CONTACT CONTINUED TO NOTICE A STRONG FUEL ODOR AND WAS EXPERIENCING RESPIRATORY COMPLICATIONS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 28,000....UPDATED 05/01/13 *BF *TR
WHEN GAS TANK IS FILLED, INSIDE CABIN SMELLS GAS WHICH IS NOT TOLERABLE AND NEED TO BE ADDRESSED. *TR
THE VEHICLE'S CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED AFTER COMMUTE FROM WORK. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO MERCEDES-BENZ OF EL PASO FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING WHICH REVEALED A CRACK IN THE FUEL TANK ALLOWING FUMES TO ESCAPE FROM THE VEHICLE. WHEN TANK IS FILLED, GAS FUMES COULD BE SMELLED THROUGHOUT THE HOUSE IF THE CAR IS PARKED IN THE GARAGE. FUEL TANK WAS REPLACED AT A COST OF $2400 WITH REPAIRS COMPLETED BY MERCEDES BENZ OF EL PASO IN FEBRUARY 2013. *TR
IN JANUARY, 2009, I PURCHASED A CERTIFIED USED MERCEDES BENZ E350 FROM A MERCEDES DEALER IN TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA. AT THE TIME I PURCHASED MY VEHICLE IT HAD APPROXIMATELY 40,000 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. IN DECEMBER, 2012, I BEGAN TO NOTICE THE SMELL OF FUEL IN THE CABIN OF MY CAR. THE SMELL WAS OVERWHELMING AND INCREASED OVER TIME. AT THE TIME I FIRST NOTICED THE FUEL SMELL, MY VEHICLE HAD APPROXIMATELY 90,000 MILES ON THE ODOMETER AND THE VEHICLE WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO MY MERCEDES DEALER IN GEORGETOWN, TEXAS, AND WAS INFORMED OF THE FAULTY GAS SEAL AND WAS VERY SURPRISED WHEN THEY INFORMED ME THAT I HAD TO REPLACE THE SEAL, ENTIRE GAS TANK, AND GAS LINES. TO FIX THE PROBLEM, WHICH WAS NOW A SAFETY HAZARD AS WELL AS AN ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARD TO THE OCCUPANTS OF MY VEHICLE, I HAD TO PAY OVER $3,600 OUT OF POCKET TO HAVE THE REPAIR COMPLETED. THE REPAIR WAS COMPLETED IN AN AFTERNOON AND I HAVE HAD NO FURTHER ISSUES. MY COMPLAINT IS THAT THIS IS A KNOWN SAFETY HAZARD WITH THE MAKE/MODEL OF THIS CAR AND MERCEDES REFUSED TO FIX THIS KNOWN SAFETY ISSUE. WITHOUT FIXING THIS PROBLEM, THE CAR BECAME UNUSABLE. *TR
STRONG ODOR OF GASOLINE AFTER FILLING GAS TANK TO REGISTERED FULL LEVEL. *TR
STRONG ODOR OF GAS IN HOME GARAGE AFTER FILLING THE TANK. SINCE DECEMBER 2012 I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO FILL IT OVER THREE QUARTERS OF A TANK WITHOUT THE STRONG ODOR REOCCURRING. I TOOK IT TO BE SERVICED AND AFTER ONE WEEK OF TRYING, THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO FIND THE SOURCE. I PURCHASED THE CAR ON DECEMBER 11, 2009. *TR
VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED ON 11/04/12 WITH APPROXIMATELY 66,000 MILES ON ODOMETER. SHORTLY THEREAFTER, AFTER PARKING THE VEHICLE IN THE GARAGE OVERNIGHT, A VERY STRONG GASOLINE ODOR WAS PRESENT IN THE GARAGE. (THIS IS THE ONLY CAR PARKED IN THE GARAGE AT MY HOME.) THERE WERE NO OBSERVED FUEL LEAKS COMING FROM THE CAR OR ON THE GARAGE FLOOR. I NOTICED THIS SAME SMELL AROUND 01/14/13. (ODOMETER READING ABOUT 70,000 AT THIS DATE.) AFTER SOME SEARCHING ONLINE, I DETERMINED THAT THERE WERE SEVERAL INCIDENTS OF OWNERS REPORTING FUEL SMELLS ONLY AFTER COMPLETELY FILLING THE GASOLINE TANK. ON BOTH OF MY INCIDENT DATES, I HAD FILLED THE GASOLINE TANK COMPLETELY ON MY TRIP HOME. THIS SMELL IS NOT PRESENT AFTER USING ABOUT 3-4 GALLONS OF FUEL. IT IS ALSO NOT PRESENT IF I ONLY FILL THE TANK TO ABOUT 3/4 OR 4/5 FULL, WHICH IS WHAT I MOST OFTEN DO. WHEN REFUELING, I TYPICALLY REFILL $20 - $40 AT ONE TIME AND DO NOT COMPLETELY FILL MY TANK. I HAVE NOT YET NOTICED ANY FUEL SMELL INSIDE OF MY VEHICLE, ONLY ON THE OUTSIDE AND WITHIN THE GARAGE. *TR
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
I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE NEW IN OCT. 2006. ON NOV. 7, 2012 WITH 19600 MILES I FILLED THE GAS TANK FULL OF FUEL AND NOTICED IMMEDIATELY INSIDE CABIN, TRUNK, AND OUTSIDE OF THE VEHICLE WAS A STRONG FUEL SMELL BEYOND BELIEF! AFTER SEVERAL DAYS OF THIS ISSUE I RESEARCHED TO FIND OUT THERE ARE MANY PROBLEMS FROM OTHER OWNERS WITH THIS EXACT SAME PROBLEM. AFTER REVIEWING THERE ISSUES I STARTED MY OWN INVESTIGATION AND AFTER REMOVING MY BACK SEAT; I FOUND THAT FUEL IS LEAKING FROM THE FUEL SYSTEM INSIDE THE CABIN OF VEHICLE. I AM SO DISAPPOINTED AND HIGHLY CONCERNED FOR MY SAFETY AS WELL AS OTHER INNOCENT DRIVER'S AROUND ME THAT A SUDDEN SPARK MAY IGNITE MY VEHICLE ON FIRE AND CAUSE A MASS EXPLOSION WHILE DRIVING. PLEASE WITH ALL THESE CURRENT ISSUES FIND MBUSA RESPONSIBLE. I HAVE GIVEN MBUSA YEARS OF LOYALTY IN OWNING THREE OF THERE VEHICLES. WE PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE USED FROM A MERCEDES DEALER 5 WEEKS AGO. AFTER THE FIRST COUPLE GAS REFILLS I NOTICED THAT THE CAR HAD A STRONG GAS SMELL AROUND IT. JUST STANDING NEXT TO THE CAR, I COULD SMELL GAS. IT SEEMED WRONG. AT FIRST I FIGURED IT WAS JUST BECAUSE I WAS AT THE GAS STATION. BUT THEN I REALIZED THE CAR ALSO SMELLED OF GAS AT HOME. WHEN THE CAR SITS OVERNIGHT OR FOR LONGER PERIODS, THE INTERIOR NOTICEABLY SMELLS LIKE GAS UPON OPENING THE DOOR. HAVING OWNED A LOT OF CARS I KNEW THIS WASN'T RIGHT. I DID AN INTERNET SEARCH TO SEE IF THIS WAS SOME SORT OF KNOWN ISSUE. OF COURSE A LOT OF INFORMATION POPPED UP AS FAR AS OTHER PEOPLE HAVING THIS ISSUE AND A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT. I CALLED THE DEALER TO SEE IF MB WAS FIXING THIS UNOFFICIALLY OR ANYTHING ALONG THOSE LINES. THE SERVICE MANAGER PLEADED IGNORANCE. HE STATED HE HAD NEVER HEARD OF SUCH A THING, COULDN'T IMAGINE IT WAS TRUE OR THAT THERE WOULD BE SUCH A PROBLEM. HE DIDN'T SOUND VERY CONVINCING. NOW WE HAVE A 'NEW' CAR THAT LEAKS GAS. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO SAY BEYOND THAT. I'M STILL TOO DISAPPOINTED AND STUNNED AT THIS SITUATION. *TR

I TOOK MY 2007 MERCEDES BENZ BLUTECH TO THE DEALER FOR THE ONCE A YEAR "B" SERVICE. WHILE THEY WERE DOING THE SERVICE, THEY NOTICED DIESEL FUEL LEAKING BEHIND THE LEFT REAR TIRE. I HAD THEM PERFORM AN INSPECTION FOR $135 AND THEY DETERMINED THAT FUEL WAS LEAKING OUT OF THE LEFT FUEL LEVEL SENDER AREA WITH NO VISUAL DAMAGE. THEY RECOMMENDED REPLACING LEFT TANK SEAL AND INSPECTING TANK AND SENSOR FOR CRACKS FOR $368. BEFORE HAVING THE WORK PERFORMED , I WENT ON THE INTERNET AND FOUND OTHERS HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THEIR MERCEDES WITH NHTSA ACTION #PE12001. WE HAD NO FUEL SMELL OR ANY INDICATIONS THERE WAS A LEAK. I FEEL THIS IS A SERIOUS DEFECT AND MERCEDES BENZ SHOULD RECALL THESE VEHICLES BEFORE SOMEONE GETS KILLED. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 MERCEDES E350. THE CONTACT STATED THAT A FUEL SMELL EMITTED INTO THE CAB OF THE VEHICLE AND FUEL WAS LEAKING FROM THE TOP OF THE FUEL TANK. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING AND THE ENTIRE FUEL TANK NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS HAVE BEEN FILED FOR THIS EXACT OCCURRENCE AND MERCEDES STILL REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE DEFECT IN THE FUEL TANK. THE SMELL IS IRREPLACEABLE ONCE THE POOLING OF THE FUEL ABSORBS INTO THE BACK SEATS . FINALLY, IN OCTOBER OF 2012 (APPROX. 10/10/12) MERCEDES BENZ DID REPLACE UNDER WARRANTY THE ENTIRE GASOLINE TANK AND RELATED LINES AND CONNECTION. THIS DID RESOLVE THE PROBLEM OF GASOLINE SMELL IN MY GARAGE AFTER GASOLINE TANK FILL-UP. NO GAS LEAKS EVER NOTICED OR FIRE EVER OCCUR. ON THE NEXT DAY I WAS GOOGLING TO CHECK OUT WHAT IS THE P0025 CODE MEAN AND THEN I HAD NOTICED THAT THIS TYPE OF FAULTY CAM SHAFT PART HAS BEEN LONG AWARD WITH MANY OF THE DRIVERS. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THERE WAS A FUEL LEAK IN THE REAR SEAT OF THE VEHICLE WHERE THE ELECTRONIC WIRING AND FUEL SENDING UNIT WAS LOCATED. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE FUEL TANK AND FUEL PUMP WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 67,000.
WHEN FILLING UP MY GAS TANK I NOTICED A VERY STRONG ODOR OF GASOLINE. WAS VERY CONCERNED THAT IF SOMEONE NEARBY HAD BEEN SMOKING FUMES WOULD HAVE IGNITED. MINE IS A 90000 MILE VEHICLE SHOWING NORMAL WEAR, NO ABUSE OR NO ACCIDENTS, DIAGNOSED WITH LEAKY FUEL TANK. JUST SPENT $900 ON FUEL PUMP, SENDER AND PRESSURE SENSOR-ALL OF WHICH WAS TO FIX STRONG GAS ODOR. REPAIRS DID NOT ABATE THE STRONG GAS ODOR WHEN TANK IS FULL. INDEPENDENT MERCEDES MECHANIC THEN DIAGNOSED AS LEAKY TANK AND STATED THAT REPAIRS WOULD BE ABOUT $1500. HIS PARTS MAN SAID THAT THE PART NUMBER ON THE FUEL TANKS HAD CHANGED THREE TIMES-INDICATING THAT HE THOUGHT THAT MERCEDES WAS TRYING DIFFERENT FIXES. MECHANIC ALSO SAID THAT HIS SHOP HAS DIAGNOSED/FIXED SEVERAL OTHER WITH SAME PROBLEM. GAS ODOR IS SO STRONG THAT I BELIEVE THAT A TOSSED CIGARETTE WOULD IGNITE MY MERCEDES. MECHANIC SAYS THAT THE TANK IS SOME FORM OF "PLASTIC" AND NOT METAL. *TR
THERE IS A STRONG FUEL SMELL IN THE VEHICLE AFTER FILLING UP GAS TANK. DEALER FOUND THE ISSUE ASSOCIATED TO FUEL SENDING UNIT, WHICH SEEM TO BE A RECURRENT ISSUE WITH THIS MODEL IN MERCEDES. DEALER REQUIRES $1,400 TO FIX THE ISSUE. I HAVE CONTACTED MBUSA TO SEE IF THEY CAN HELP WITH THIS REPAIR. THERE HAS BEEN A VOLUNTARY RECALL ON THE E CLASS FOR 03-06 VEHICLES, HOWEVER MY CAR IS AN 07 MODEL AND THERE IS NO RECALL ON THIS YEAR, YET FORUMS OF MERCEDES BENZ OWNERS ARE FILLED WITH SAME COMPLAINT FOR ALL E CLASS MODELS WITH CHASSIS W211. ON NOV 14, 20012 I TOOK IT TO CAL STAR MOTORS IN GLENDALE CA (A MERCEDES DEALER) FOR REPAIR, THEY TOLD ME THAT THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM IS THE SEAL BETWEEN THE SENDING UNIT AND THE GAS TANK. THEY REPLACED THIS PART AND I DROVE THE CAR HOME AS I NEEDED TO BRING IN CAR WITH HALF A TANK FOR REPAIR I DID NOT NOTICE ANY ISSUE. NEXT TIME I FILLED UP THERE WAS NO SMELL FROM INSIDE CABIN AND ONLY SLIGHT SMELL OUTSIDE. I NOW HAVE FILLED UP SEVERAL TIMES AND THE PROBLEM HAS RETURNED. UPDATED 8/30/12 THE CONSUMER STATED EVERY TIME THE FUEL TANK WAS FILLED, IT LEAKED FROM THE LEFT FUEL SENDING UNIT UNDER THE DRIVER'S SIDE BACK SEAT. GAS FUMED WERE VERY NOTICEABLE OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE AND SOMEWHAT INSIDE THE VEHICLE UNTIL THE CAR WAS DRIVEN ABOUT 100 MILES AND THE FUEL LEVEL WAS DOWN ABOUT FOUR GALLONS. LIQUID GAS PUDDLES WERE ON TOP OF THE SENDING UNIT AND RAN DOWN THE SIDE OF THE TANK TO THE GROUND. THE MERCEDES FACTORY REP REFUSED TO REPLACE THE LEAKING PARTS. THE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED THAT IF NHTSA OR THE CLASS ACTION SUIT LAWSUIT WERE TO RULE IN FAVOR OF THE CUSTOMER, THEY WOULD DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE PROBLEM THEN. UPDATED 09/05/12

I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER, THEY SAID THEY FIXED IT, BUT THEY DID NOT. I THINK MERCEDES IS AWARE OF THIS ISSUE YET REFUSES TO DO A RECALL.
